Who is it for?
Luminth and Luminth Orbiter are for everyone who enjoys creating music. Beginners can start playing immediately: no musical training is necessary. Experienced musicians will enjoy a new approach to making music.
Luminth Orbiter can be used to:
- Generate new melodic and rhythmic ideas
- Play relaxing music at the end of a long day
- Create ambient sounds for a space or gathering
- Foster a child's interest in creating music
- Make a soundtrack for your Kickstarter video. ;-)
What is it?
The Luminth is a minimalist USB control peripheral. To use the Luminth, simply click, turn, and push+turn. The Luminth changes color with the music.
Luminth Orbiter is a generative music software application. Make dramatic changes to the music with a single click. Dive deeper to make refined, subtle adjustments. Or, let Orbiter work autonomously to create music that morphs over time.
The Luminth is the best way to control Luminth Orbiter software, but Orbiter is fully functional with or without the Luminth.
The Luminth connects to any standard USB port via a standard USB cable. Luminth Orbiter software requires a Mac or Windows computer. We recommend an Intel "Core i" processor and at least 4GB of memory.
We have successfully tested Luminth and Luminth Orbiter with the following computer configurations:
- Mac OS X 10.8, 4GB, Intel Core i5 1.8GHz (MacBook Air)
- Mac OS X 10.8, 4GB, Intel Core i7 2.7Ghz (MacBook Pro)
- Windows 7 64 Bit, 4GB, Intel Core i7-2620M
- Windows 7 32 Bit, 2GB, Intel Core i3-370M
- Windows 8 64 Bit, 4GB, Intel Core i3-2130
Luminth Orbiter was created using Max/MSP. The complete Max/MSP "source patch" is included with every purchase.
Can the Luminth be used with other software?
The Luminth interfaces with the computer via a USB "virtual COM port". Any software application that can send and receive arbitrary bytes via a serial port can connect to the Luminth.

Risks and challenges
We have already completed the electronic hardware design for the Luminth. However, manufacturing delays can happen due to component availability. We will do our best to minimize delays.
Our software and drivers are based on widely-deployed commercial products (Max/MSP and FTDI USB drivers), so OS incompatibilities should be limited. We are unable to test our product on every possible computer configuration, but we will do our best to solve any problems that arise.
We successfully delivered the NTH Music Synthesizer to Kickstarter backers in 2012 and will apply our experience to this project.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
