About

INTRODUCTION

An abstract strategy board game for 1 or 2 players.

Age 9+     Duration: 10 - 60 minutes.

Players engage in opposition using simple rules on a unique board constructed of 4 interlocking transpositions of a single simple 5 line design.

Linear Pursuit is an intense examination of the powers of observation, strategic prowess and timing.

Players manoeuvre their pieces around the board in an effort to both block and capture their opponents pieces. Capture your opponents Masterpiece to win the game.

Your Masterpiece can be instrumental to victory. When will you introduce yours ? Too early ? Too late ? There is no doubt that the optimum moment will present itself. Will you be astute enough to recognise it ?

It is a game that demands your full attention. If you are a fan of Chess, or Onitama, you'll love Linear Pursuit.

Play it casually for a lighter, shorter, (dare I say, “fun”) exchange with friends and family, or, delve deeper for a more challenging, blow for blow exchange with your fiercest rivals.

With its possible set ups limited only by your imagination, you need never play it the same way twice.

In addition to the “Two Player” game, there are two “Solo Challenges” (this is where the“Travel Board” excels).

The “Junior Challenge”, whilst possible to complete within a minute or two, can frustrate for a good deal longer. As for the “Full Challenge”, well, good luck with that one. To the die-hards among you who refuse to be beaten, I can only apologise in advance for any distress you may suffer.

PROJECT OBJECTIVE

The intention of this campaign is to deliver a first edition, oak veneered “Standard” board, accompanied by an oak veneered “Travel” board, in a single package, that are well crafted and functional. The depicted box design (a total deconstruction of the playing surface) and “Standard” board corner detail, will be used for this first edition only.

Thank you for taking the time to acknowledge “Linear Pursuit” regardless of your ultimate decision.

Stuart.

THE ANATOMY OF A GAME

There are two prominent strategies when playing Linear Pursuit.

There are those who prefer to maintain a minimal number of pieces in play at any given time in order to minimise exposure to capture.  However, this strategy works best when both players adopt the same strategy and provides a single, protracted phase of deep tactical play. This can be artificially induced by employing a rule dictating a maximum number of three pieces each, in play at any time. Alternatively, players may agree to start play with fewer pieces.

My personal preference is to quickly bring as many pieces into play as possible. Whilst this strategy tends to bring dominance over the minimalist, when employed by both players, this soon results in restrictive safe movement options resulting in a game that generally plays through three phases.

Phase 1. Players jostle for position until reaching a point of saturation.

Phase 2. A period of capture and sacrifice ensues.

Phase 3. With the reduction in the number of pieces on the board, you enter the final phase, requiring a greater depth of tactical play.

"An abstract concept that's easy to pick up but hard to master. Plenty of depth and richness to the game, very much like Chess"

TWO PLAYER "CLASSIC"
TWO PLAYER "CLASSIC"

THE TWO PLAYER GAME.

Linear Pursuit, it's your game, play it your way.

The "Classic" two player game uses all playing pieces (7 each), these are set up in the outer (out of play) positions with the "Masterpiece" central, the remaining pieces set in their pairs, either side, decreasing in height.

However, alternatively, not only are you free to set up the pieces in any configuration, you need not use all 7 pieces each.

Provided you and your opponent have an equal number of pieces (not necessarily of the same type) and both have a "Masterpiece", players may draw straws (playing pieces) to decide who places first, then take alternate turns placing a piece anywhere on the board in an outer (out of play) position. Once all pieces have been placed. players again draw straws to decide who goes first.

THE RULES

On their turn, a player must move any one of their pieces.

A piece must first be placed in its inner (in play) position, this constitutes a players turn.

A piece cannot be brought into play if its inner (in play) position is occupied.

Once in play, a piece can capture and be captured. Capture an opponents piece by moving to its position and removing it.

RULES OF MOVEMENT

No movement along the circumference is permitted.

"Smallest Pair":

Once in play, can only move from its position, along a single line to an inner (in play) position, if vacant or occupied by an opponents piece.

"Medium Pair" and "Large Pair":

Once in play, can only move from its position, along  two consecutive lines connected by a vacant inner (in play) position, to an inner (in play) position either vacant or occupied by an opponents piece.

"Masterpiece":

Can elect to move from its position, either along a single line or two consecutive lines connected by a vacant inner (in play) position, to an inner (in play) position either vacant or occupied by an opponents piece.

A piece capable of moving along two lines cannot use the same line twice to complete a turn..

Victory is achieved by either capturing your opponents "Masterpiece" or if your opponent has no legal move available.

If the only pieces remaining in play are the two "Masterpieces", any player on their turn may declare a draw.

 THE SOLO CHALLENGE.

Do not be fooled by the simple beauty of this challenge it can be a beast.

JUNIOR CHALLENGE.

The aim of the challenge is to manoeuvre the pieces from their starting positions to their respective positions on the opposite side of the board (in their inner positions).

To start, set the pieces in their outer (out of play) positions, with the pairs decreasing in height either side of their respective "Masterpiece".

Manouevre the pieces directly around the board from their outer (out of play) positions.

All pieces can only move from their position, along two consecutive lines connected by a vacant inner (in play) position, to a vacant inner (in play) position. Once in play a piece must remain in play.

A piece cannot be brought into play from its outer (out of play) position if its inner (in play) position is occupied.

Movement along the circumference is not permitted.

FULL CHALLENGE.

As  "Junior Challenge" except all pieces start in their inner (in play) positions.

Risks and challenges

I have offered a single reward tier with the explicit intention of minimising risk. However, this being my first project, I will no doubt encounter challenges. As and when I do I shall both seek advice to resolve, and advise to inform. Whilst I have stated delivery in August, I anticipate fulfilment earlier but guard against disappointment.
Over the course of the campaign it may become apparent that there is a demand for a retailer pledge level, this, and stretch goals for cloth drawstring bags (as opposed to the current plastic baggies) and sculpted playing pieces are the only alterations I am anticipating for this first project.
