About this project
BIG ANNOUNCEMENT: If the goal is met by DOUBLE, every school in the USA will have access to one (1) eBook version of LITTLE STEPS!* If the goal is met by TRIPLE, every backer will be awarded the opportunity to gift one (1) printed hardcopy of LITTLE STEPS to any school of their choice!** This is my way of giving back!
(Note: I will have a form on my website to make the requests.)
My name is Ryan Hipp. I am a published author-illustrator of books for kids, and recipient of the Gwen Frostic Award for inspiring literacy in kids. This book is a side project that I want to produce myself and it has a special place in my heart.
LITTLE STEPS is a 40 page full-color picture book written & illustrated by Ryan Hipp - a tale of a little caterpillar who has struggle after struggle its entire life. The lesson I hope to convey is that life is short - even more so for an insect - and each day is precious...and although many struggles and hardships you will face, you get through it by taking little steps.
A few years ago, my life came to an impasse. Life changed abruptly and harshly for me with little warning; and it was the first time in my life that I felt a complete apathy to even keep moving on - I had no idea what to do. All my plans and hopes and dreams disappeared almost overnight - and then the hits kept coming. It took quite a bit of effort to recover, but I just took things one day at a time, and eventually, life went on, I picked up the pieces - and I became a better person because of it. I started appreciating every moment of life's gift, and learned not to waste a single day. It was then that I wanted to tell my story in a way that was universally applicable to anyone - especially kids...and the story wrote itself after that. Sometimes life is REALLY HARD. And bad things happen. Its a lesson that we all sometimes need a reminder that things are going to be okay.
So I am asking for your help - I can't do it without you! I currently give presentations to about 60 schools and libraries a year throughout Michigan. Although I am currently professionally published, it does not make it any easier to get published a third or fourth time. And over the years of giving presentations, I have learned that my fans just want to see more books. It is for that reason that I want to take ownership of my own career. Your pledge helps me to raise capital to produce this book outside the gatekeepers of the commercial publishing world. My long-term plans are to do self-owned, personal projects between my commercial projects. This helps me squeeze in a new book into my catalog on my own terms, and allows me to create a book without restraints about topics that are important to me. With each pledge, I come closer to producing the book. And once the book is created, I can use the book as a tool to better advocate positive messages to students during my school visits and beyond. In a way, pledging to the making of this book is like planting a seed that will grow into a larger potential for that purpose.
$4,000 is my goal. This will only be enough to pay for a portion of the production, so even if we reach the goal, please keep the pledges coming! Any pledges above-and-beyond the goal will go to paying the full-cost of production, to increase the print run, do marketing, and maybe even to add bells & whistles to make the book printing even more special!
Every pledge counts! Since the Kickstarter policy is "all-or-nothing", if I do not reach my goal, no money exchanges hands. If I don't make my goal, nobody earns any of the incentives, (view to the right, and read more below). We are all in it together! So help me reach the goal to make the project a reality ad receive some awesome rewards!
I am offering great incentives for your pledges! Especially for schools! Check out all the pledge levels, (to the right), to see all the gifts I am offering for pledges! Note: A pledge to this project is not an automatic payment for the book, unless noted in the pledge gift details.
Please share this with everyone you know! Word-of-mouth goes a long way and every pledge really does help! Please contribute in any way you can!
Thanks so much for your efforts in helping bring LITTLE STEPS into the world!
Risks and challenges
There will be very minimal risks and challenges. The book creative-side is completed and ready to be printed. I have 9 years experience in the field of professional children's publishing, and all the arrangements are in place for actual production - other than complete funds. The one risk is that my goal is less than the cost of production, which is why it is even more crucial to continue to exceed the goal. However, if only the minimum is met, I have financing in place to cover the remainder.
There may be unexpected delays or hurdles, but nothing that will prevent production from completing if this Kickstarter is a success.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
