Update 23 -- Award-Winning Voice Actor Jennifer Hale Joins The Long Dark

Posted by Hinterland (Creator)

Award-winning Voice Actor Jennifer Hale Joins The Long Dark

The world of The Long Dark is one of harsh beauty. The same elements that may kill you with indifference, haunt you with their majesty. The wind howls, the snow falls, and the aurora hangs above you, a breathtaking reminder of what humanity has just lost.

We’ve talked a lot about rugged bearded men, the rough “coffee and cigarettes” men like bush pilot Will Mackenzie, who have the stern stuff needed to survive in this post-digital, post-disaster world.

But every bit equal to them are the strong women who face the new frontier.

Jennifer Hale is the epitome of this strength. An avid climber, skier, rider, and a CERT trained volunteer rescue worker, Jennifer lives and breathes the outdoors. She also volunteers with a group that rescues horses in advance of oncoming brush fires.

Her strong, rich voice has already brought gravitas to the intro voice over for our Kickstarter pitch video, as well as hundreds of television shows, animated series, and of course, over 130 video games including leading roles in the Mass Effect series (as Commander Shepard), BioShock Infinite, Halo 4, Metal Gear Solid 4, among many, many others. You can find a complete list of Jennifer’s credits at

We’re so excited to have Jennifer bring her incredible talents to The Long Dark, and can’t wait to share more with you about her character, and the pivotal role she plays in the story.

Update 22 -- Safe House Details, Fan Art, Official Wiki, Reddit

Posted by Hinterland (Creator)

Hello Hinterlanders,

Another exciting day for The Long Dark on Kickstarter! We march ever onward towards our goal. Thanks again for all your support and for getting the word out there. The team here has been overwhelmed by your generosity, both in terms of financial contribution and even more so the time and energy you've all been putting into spreading the word about the game.

Some updates.

Reddit AMA

The Reddit AMA was a huge success. We spent 2 hours with the Reddit community, answering questions about the studio, team, and game. (Truth be told, we haven't been able to stay out of the thread since, and have been popping back into answer more questions as they come's fun!).

We were the top story in Reddit/r/games yesterday, and we're still there! Check it out if you haven't seen it already.

First Fan Art!

Only a few weeks out in the wild and we already have some fan art for The Long Dark! Trudi Castle (@_LadyTea in Twitter), a freelance concept artist in Vancouver, sent us these amazing concept pieces inspired by what she saw in our gameplay video. Stunning!

For more of Trudi's great work, check out her Tumblr. Pop her a note and let her know what you thought of her art!

Official Wiki for The Long Dark!

We've just partnered up with on the network, to be the official host of the Wiki for The Long Dark! Gamepedia already hosts the official wikis for great games like Minecraft, League of Legends, World of Warcraft, etc., as well as hosting the official wikis for some recent Kickstarter darlings like Mighty No. 9 and Hyper Light Drifter.

We'll share the official link with you as soon as it's skinned and ready to go!

Safe House Details

In an open-world experience like The Long Dark, the player needs a place of safety they can return to rest and recover from the hazards faced during exploration, make choices around gear customization, repairing and improving gear, crafting, planning longer excursions to distant locales, etc., as well as interact with key story NPCs.

The Safe House provides significant gameplay value to the player and sometimes acts as a "gate" for content progress -- in other words, events that advance the story or change the world state may only occur when the player returns to the Safe House.

As such, there will be a constant pull on the player to return to the Safe House, and the tension between wanting to remain in the relative safety of the Safe House vs. needing to head out into the world to find supplies and complete objectives will drive a lot of self-directed sandbox gameplay.

Some examples of actions you can undertake while in the Safe House, as well as general gameplay benefits:

  • Shelter from the elements. Safe Houses offer protection from weather and cold, and wood stoves can be used to provide heat, cook food, etc.
  • Gear and supply storage. This includes excess gear (clothing, tools, repair components, weapons, etc.), food and water, fuel, first aid equipment, etc. Store "stuff" that you find in the world that you think might be useful but don't necessarily want to carry around with you wherever you go, and resupply on food, water, ammunition, etc.
  • Workbench. A good place to do some crafting or item repair beyond simple maintenance.
  • Bed. You'll get very tired exploring the world and will sometimes need to rest. "Using" the bed will bring up an analog watch interface you can set to advance time. Resting will reduce your Fatigue, and will advance certain health-related conditions (healing, or the progress of illness), and is also a useful way to advance time.
  • Bookshelf. You might find some useful books in the world on topics you'd like to learn more about. Find them and dedicate time to reading them, and you can increase your Knowledge about certain things in the world.

The Safe House will also be a location that can act as a gateway for narrative progression through the game story. This means, occasionally important events will be triggered by returning to, or leaving, the Safe House.

Long-distance travel between locations might require the establishment of more than one Safe House. You will also be able to set up temporary Camps which can be useful places to take shelter, rest, and resupply along travel routes, as well as Supply Caches which are essentially points of resupply where you can top up on food, water, first aid consumables, etc.

Hopefully this gets you excited about some of the things you're going to be doing in The Long Dark!

We're just a hair under $150K. Another $50K to go in the next 5.5 days. Feel like a long shot to you? Nah. We'll get there. Stay the course, and we will get there together.

Update 21 -- MEGA UPDATE: Funding Surge, Reddit AMA, Contest Winners, New Poster, And More!

Posted by Hinterland (Creator)

Hello Hinterlanders,

Well, it's certainly been an exciting few days.

On Sunday, we were selected as Kickstarter's Project of the Day. Yesterday, we shared the first gameplay footage of The Long Dark. Between those two events, we've (you've!) raised almost $25,000 (more than 10% of our goal) for The Long Dark! This is amazing progress, and brings us ever closer to our goal.

We've also hit another incredible milestone -- over 4000 backers!

A few other interesting numbers:

  • Over 30,000 hits of our gameplay video on YouTube, plus thousands more on mirrors.
  • Over 350 total articles in 25 languages covering The Long Dark and Hinterland since our announcement a month ago.
  • Nearly 700 new backers in the last two days alone!

This is amazing news for the project. If we can keep this momentum up, the $200K goal is within our reach. All it needs is us continuing to update and spread the word, and with your help we can reach even more people, so keep doing what you're doing, because it's working.

Now, onto a few more updates.

Reddit AMA

The Hinterland team will be on Reddit today, between 12-2PM PST, to answer questions about...anything. We'll probably focus on the game, but really we'll just be there to respond to the community and share our excitement for The Long Dark. Please join us! We'll post the actual discussion thread on Twitter and Facebook when we get closer to going live, so check us out there to get the link.

High Rez Screenshots for Wallpaper

Many of you asked us to post a download link to high-rez copies of the screenshots we recently released, so you could use them as desktop wallpaper and whatnot. So, we did

New Poster

We have a new poster for The Long Dark, from the mind of The Long Dark's art director, Hokyo Lim. This poster will be available at both the $55 and $100 poster reward tiers. All backers getting the poster will have the chance to select their poster choice through a survey once the Kickstarter campaign is finished.

Name a Location Contest Winners

Yesterday, we promised that we'd reward 3 of the retweeters/sharers of our Gameplay Footage announcement, by offering them Location Naming Rights in The Long Dark.

The three winners are:

  • Jonas Wagner (from Facebook)
  • @Pancho_2099 (from Twitter)
  • Aaron Brooks (@promythyus from Twitter)

Congratulations! We'll be in touch with each of you to get your details and sort you out for your Location Naming Rights reward.

Physical Goods Shipped by Mid-December!

We want to let you know that we're setting up logistics so that we'll be able to fulfill and ship all your physical goods (T-shirts, posters, DVD cases, etc.) by Christmas. Some physical items (ex. Art Book) might not be ready until later in development, but our intention is to manufacture and ship all the physical goods we can by mid-December, in time for the holidays. So order some extras for your loved ones!

What the Press Are Saying about The Long Dark!

We wanted to share some highlights from coverage of our gameplay footage. So far, there have been over 130 articles, since only yesterday!

"Unlike a majority of the post-apocalyptic survival games we’re inundated with every year, The Long Dark is beautiful." - Bloody Disgusting,

"The thing that really stands out with the game is the art-style... it's very striking and also shows that a game doesn't need to be pushing for photorealism to be compelling, and have its own personality to stand out from the crowd all while looking like a gorgeous painting come to life."

- Cinema Blend,

"Guaranteed zombie-free survival sim." -,

This looks like a world I don't want to be in, and since that's kind of the point, job well done. I feel uneasy simply watching the video.

- Destructoid,

"The Long Dark is already looking like a stylized winter wonderland (of constant, creeping terror and peril)."

- Rock Paper Shotgun,

"As you can see, the distinctive style of the game's concept art has carried across intact into the 3D environments of the game, but what's most interesting about the footage is how it demonstrates the number of simulation systems at play in the game."

- US Gamer,

Indie Love

Show a little extra love to some of our brothers and sisters on Kickstarter:

Contagion (co-op zombie survival horror on the Source engine; 5 days to go)

Hyper Light Drifter (beautiful art style; 4 days to go)

River City Ransom: Underground (23 hours to go...get in there quick!)

Nelvana of the Northern Lights (First Canadian super-heroine! Plus it says "Northern Lights".)

That's the update for today. Remember the Reddit AMA at 12-2PM PST. Keep spreading the word. We're going to make it.

We leave you with these inspirational words that have brought comfort in many dark times:

"All endeavor calls for the ability to tramp the last mile, shape the last plan, endure the last hour's toil. The fight to the finish spirit is the one... characteristic we must posses if we are to face the future as finishers." - Henry David Thorough, Walden

Keep the fires burning.

Update 19 -- First Screens of The Long Dark!

Posted by Hinterland (Creator)

Hello Hinterlanders,

In anticipation of revealing the first gameplay footage of The Long Dark next week, we thought we'd start the weekend with a little tease of what's to come.

Here are three screenshots from the current prototype build of The Long Dark, which should give you a sense of how we're translating the art style you see in the concept art, to 3D.

We're 11 days away from the end of the Kickstarter campaign for The Long Dark, with about $95K left to raise. We hope that seeing these screens excites you, and gives you a reason to spread the word about The Long Dark! With your continued support, we can hit our goal. But we're all going to have to work together to make it happen.

And remember, the secret to growing a great #survivalbeard is simple: stop shaving.
