What is MASSO?
Masso is an all in one CNC controller, that doesn’t need a PC. It has all the inputs, outputs and control electronics needed to control all types of CNC machines and more, so you can just unbox, plug in and get on with your projects.
The MASSO has been over 2 years in development and is designed from ground up on a custom built hardware platform that includes all the inputs and outputs to control machine axis, spindles etc. All the required hardware is built into the system and the user only needs to connect a monitor through VGA cable and a standard USB keyboard. With our unique dedicated architecture the machine can be controlled without requiring any PC.
MASSO is compatible with most standard motors / drives and can be easily interfaced with most machine types.
Use on milling machines
Use on lathe machines
Use on plasma machine, pick and place and more...
From our own years of experience in building and using CNC machines, we found PC based machine controllers have many disadvantages from both a software and hardware point of view. We’ve designed the MASSO to address and eliminate these issues, so you can just unbox, plug-in and GO!
How MASSO works
MASSO works on custom built hardware that has all the required electronics and noise filters built-in to run as a dedicated stand-alone CNC controller that can control 3, 4 or 5 axis at up to 100 kHz pulse rate. Custom designed and built hardware and software designed specifically the hardware ensures you get full control and functionality without the hassle.
All hardware functions and signal processing is designed to interface with standard servo and stepper drives, sensor signals, encoders, MPG hand wheels and more. We are always working to add support for wider range of hardware.
We have included all the required hardware on MASSO so that you don't have to worry about any expansion cards or PLC's.
- 32 optically isolated general purpose inputs
- 5 axis STEP & DIRECTION signals
- 100kHz pulse rate
- Encoder input for spindle RPM and threading (lathe version)
- 4 Analog (12 bit) inputs
- MODBUS and serial interface
- 16 general purpose outputs
- Direct spindle control with 0-10 volts, CW, CCW & PWM
- 6 relay outputs
- MPG hand wheel dial support
- On-site software upgradeable through USB flash drive

What do you get
First model of "PC less" CNC controller
The idea for this revolutionary design came from our own years of experience in building and using CNC machines. The PC based systems we used were time consuming and complicated to setup with poor documentation, resulting in a lot of wasted time and frustration.
And when we managed to setup those controllers we encountered many compatibility issues and software glitches. More often than not, our PC based controllers would crash or operate erratically and we realised what was needed was a dedicated hardware system and a software built specifically for that hardware to get the functionality and reliability we needed from a CNC controller.
We wanted a CNC controller specially designed to be a CNC controller and nothing more – and without needing an expensive PC to run it. We wanted a CNC controller that was easy to setup and operate, so we could unbox, plug-in and get on with our CNC projects. So out of our desire for such a CNC controller we started designing a custom hardware system and software specifically for it. We then created prototypes and did extensive testing using various machines. Since then we’ve made various changes based on testing and fine-tuned our design to create working models which we have trialled on various machines including many industrial applications.

Risks and challenges
As we’ve built and extensively tested the MASSO, there are no design and technical risks for our project. We have mitigated production and supplier risks through sourcing reliable service providers and have consulted with additional service providers as a backup measure. Below are ways we plan to utilise the funding to further improve our product and provide a better value for our backers and customers.
To ensure continuous improvement we plan to keep adding new software features to our controllers and all future updates will be emailed for free. The funding raised will help us expand our team and add more features to the controllers. We also plan to add more wizards for plasma, water-jet and pick & place machines.
Quality and reliability is of utmost importance to us. We are committed towards a top-quality product and have developed test jigs for hardware testing and have developed standard procedures for software testing. We plan to utilise funding raised to go towards setting up improved and automated test jigs for faster testing which will improve our production runs and allow us to deliver to our backers and customers quicker.
In the past two years we have manufactured & assembled the controllers at first in-house and then through service providers in China and Taiwan. We have worked closely with circuit board manufacturers & assemblers to streamline the parts sourcing and assembling. Funding would allow us to achieve better production efficiency and cost effectiveness due to bulk ordering and production runs.
