For decades, there has been a growing population of POCs, LGBTQ, women and people with disabilities in gaming, anime, cosplay and comic fandoms!
Unfortunately, these growing diverse fans are not often see represented on the guest rosters and programming at conventions they attend.
Blerdcon is an inclusive con that focuses on unrepresented and underrepresented populations in all genres of geekdom, This will be the first of its kind as a full convention that runs on a 24 hour schedule!
While ticket sales generate much of our revenue, vendors like ticketmaster, showclix and eventbrite dont release funds until the day or week of an event. Here we want to allow for attendees to buy their badges, and donor/sponsors to support the convention where we can use the funds to enhance the content. We want to reserve more space, expand our guest and program offerings for THIS, our inaugural event! Thousands of black, white, Asian, Latino, native American, LGBTQ, veterans, women, people with disabilities and international geeks are planning to attend! So we are using the campaign to build out YOUR con.......Blerdcon!
Our con is fully funded at it's current level through a partnership between EMConsultants LLC, a DC based events management and marketing consultancy, and RGR International, a venture capital firm. Together they bring over 30 years of events management, marketing and funding experience to bring about this singular convention.
WE WANT TO EXPAND OUR CONTENT AND OFFER EVEN MORE SPACE, GUESTS AND VALUE INCLUDING:
VETERANS: We are highlighting those that serve and have served our country who are now geeking out via cosplay, gaming and comics! Many of our vet community use cosplay and crafting to fight PTSD and to rehab injuries and disabilities.
So we want to invite more members of our armed services community to be guests, panelists and performers. Help us to partner with Veterans service organizations to help share their stories!
DONATE To Support Geeks Who Serve And Have Served This Country!
INTERNATIONAL: Our geekdom is worldwide! So we have found some remarkable individuals who are active in global geek activities from con running and cosplaying, to gaming and invited them to be a part of Blerdcon! The struggle for representation is a global one! We want to invite more of our geek family from exciting parts of the world to learn, teach and share their experience!
DONATE To Help Connect Gamers, Artists, Cosplayers And Fans Of All Stripes To The World Community!
PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES: Cosplayers, artists and gamers of all stripes have overcome tremendous challenges in order to express their art and participate in their fandoms. Their stories and accomplishments inspire us all and add value to our communities.
But while many of them can and do travel to cons, it can be a daunting and expensive undertaking to bring all the equipment and personnel needed. We want to help make attending cons possible for everyone! We will be giving free badges to help bring these hardcore fans to Blerdcon!
DONATE to help us bring MORE members of this community as guests, panelists and cosplayers!
LGBTQ: We have seen a greater embrace of our friends and family of differing gender identities and orientations.
As we learn to better understand community, we learn to appreciate their diverse expression and artistry as geeks and nerds in cosplay, gaming, art and music! We want to bring even greater representation from our LGBTQ community to Blerdcon!
DONATE To Make Con Equality Real For 2017!
SUPPORT & ADVOCACY PARTNERS: Blerdcon not only wants to bring new and exciting content, we want to partner with support and advocacy groups that serve:
- People with disabilities
- Victims of domestic abuse
- Suicide prevention resources
- Mental illness victims
DONATE To Support Partner Organizations For Special Populations And Those In Need!
UNIQUE CONTENT: From all of the above! For most cons, the equation is simple: book celebrity guests with large followings= badges purchased by fans to cover the cost. With Blerdcon, many of our amazing prospective panelists, performers and cosplayers are not widely known (hence the underrepresented mission) and have fairly modest fan bases.
In order to bring you more of the most unique and diverse content in guests, performers, artists, celebrities and programming, we plan to put our faith in you as advocates and invest in the con you want to see!

Risks and challenges
There are inherent challenges for any first-year convention, especially for one that, no matter how broad in scope, can be considered "niche".
FIRST-YEAR CONS GARNER FEW BIG SPONSORS
While this is true, the financial backers, EMConsultants LLC and RGR International, have fully funded the base of this first year event. This means that:
• blerDCon Will Take Place No Matter What
• There are No Risks For Our Kickstarter Donors
FIRST-YEAR CONS RISK LOW ATTENDANCE
blerDCon's location puts it square in the center of one of America's richest, most diverse cities with expansive mass transit for tens of millions of potential patrons within a 50 mile radius. In addition to this, the Hyatt Crystal City has hosted 3 of the largest, most well known anime, gaming and comic cons on the east coast: Otakon, Katsucon and Anime USA. Each of these cons became so successful within 2-3 years, they outgrew this 650 room, 50,000 sq. ft. convention space. The team that worked to create that successful venue relationship is at our disposal and the operational blueprints are being followed.
WILL BLERDCON EXCLUDE ANYONE?
NO. The intersectionality of all of our targeted underrepresented populations allows for everyone to be included. Everyone is either a member of an underrepresented group, or is connected to one (whether they know it or not). blerDCon is a celebration of the uniqueness within the geek community; a gathering to experience each community in an exciting, fun and safe space.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
