Soapbox is a platform for performance art that aims to increase exposure for this underrepresented art form
Hillyer Art Space launched Soapbox, in the summer of 2011. Soapbox is a performance arts series created to cultivate Washington DC-area performance artists and engage the DC community. Soapbox acts as a platform for performance artists to present their work in an intimate setting that caters to their medium. Hillyer Art Space has championed Soapbox as an opportunity for emerging performance artists, filling the critical void for performance pieces available to the Washington, DC arts community.
The six-month Soapbox pilot period is coming to a close, and Hillyer has presented 20 performance artists and has had 800+ attendees to date. In order to sustain Soapbox and keep to our practice of making arts accessible through donation-only admittance, Soapbox needs the help of the Kickstarter community to advance this program in the next six months.
We aim to raise $5,500 to cover Soapbox expenses for a 6-month period from March-August 2012. Any funds raised over our goal will help us to fund the series for a longer period of time.
So where is that $ going?
$200 to each artist as an honorarium
$1,400 to hire a part-time staff member to run Soapbox
$500 to cover gallery expenses, filming performances, printing fliers, etc.
Kickstarter funding will help sustain, and improve the Soapbox series in order to increase awareness, attendance, and to support performance art and artists in our community.
