What is it?
This will be a 10-12 track album, coming in at around 50-60 minutes run time, composed and produced by Christopher Bingham and a roster of guests, some new, some old. Expect familiar artists from Progress and MMCCXV, with a few new features TBA.
We'll be releasing worldwide in Summer 2018 on major digital platforms and CD. We are also considering a vinyl release, subject to demand. (That will come later.)
Where is it?
Bing works out of South London, but the HWW Team and our collaborators are based all over the world in Europe, USA, and Australia. The album will be available digitally to every human with an internet connection and the physical editions will deliver to anywhere it is possible to deliver to.
Who makes this?
Although it looks a little like a one man show, it really isn't. High Five Spaceship is a collaborative effort and each album's identity comes from all the artists that work on it.
There is also a team of people working on this Kickstarter. Rich, Tenzin, and Calum at HWW will be on hand throughout this campaign and the production to make sure everything goes smoothly. Stevie B at Con Brio will be helping publish the album when the time comes.
The budget is rough as always, and there will inevitably be some unexpected costs along the way, but our goal was calculated to reflect these major sections:
Manufacture and mechanical licensing
This is the biggest one-off expense, and without securing pre-orders we can't afford to do it.
Even kept to a minimum by working in our home studios, some sessions will require a professional environment. Costs can add up very quickly.
After two albums we have a good amount of kit, but for this album there are a few toys we can't afford to buy outright. One major example Bing is very, very adamant about is analogue synthesisers...
A project of this size gets complicated, so the finance team at HWW will be working a lot harder than usual. We will incur a lot of extra hours of work making sure our budget is all organised and tracked.
Postage and customs/taxes
Postage is built into the physical perks, but there are always other costs. We need to budget for enough packaging supplies, postage and courier fees, and sometimes duty or customs on things received or sent internationally. (Please keep in mind that if you are an international customer, you might also be faced with some customs fees!)
HWW also pays for the privilege of distributing digital goods in the EU, and shoulders the cost of licensing covers etc.
Our cover art and artist is TBD at this point, but we want to be able to pay our artists and designers fairly for bringing the album to life.
Kickstarter takes a little cut, too. Thanks, Kickstarter!
What do you get?
We have some amazing perks this time around. Check the side of the page for a full list and details! All backers at ANY level get access to the backers-only blog and secret Tumblr.
Get a digital download of the album on the day of release. This is available in standard or deluxe edition (which comes with 5 extra tracks).
Get the album on CD (plus direct digital download). This will be a very limited pressing of CDs, between 500-1,000 based on demand. This version is also available in standard or deluxe (which comes with the 5 digital bonus tracks).
Entropy Is Important CD
Exclusive to this Kickstarter, we'll be home-pressing copies of our most recent EP Entropy Is Important. These will be strictly made to order, doodled on and signed with Sharpies by Bing and collaborators, delivered in a clear jewel case.
We're going back through the HFS archives to photocopy notebooks, find stills and Instagram posts from live events, collect notes, lyrics, and screenshots of project files for a digital scrapbook. Covering all three albums, this will be a 20+ page PDF that comes with your digital download on the day of release.
Skype with the Producer
For a very limited number of backers, get a 1-hour Skype call with Bing during the production of the album. You'll get a look at some of the equipment we're using, hear some works in progress, and talk shop about producing the album.
Get a bespoke HFS birthday jingle (including your name obvs). Bring a little yellow to your next rotation around the sun. This will be delivered to you as an MP3 or lossless AIF with your download of the album.
Pick a Cover Song!
Every album we try to record 2-3 cover songs as promotion on YouTube and Soundcloud. If you have a favourite song you've always wanted to hear in HFS style, nominate it with this perk and we HAVE to do it. (Within reason duh ie. no horrible racist songs.)
Your Own Unique Track
One new HFS track, probably an instrumental with an appropriate synthesiser section, will be recorded and mixed dozens of times, each time creating new harmonics, countermelodies, echoes, and distortions. If you pick this perk, you will get one of these mixes and it will be entirely unique to you. Nobody else in the world will have it, and we will delete our copy once you've got yours. What you do next is up to you. (Just don't be a douche about it like Martin Shkreli.)
Indie License Packs
Our amazing Indie License option is one of the best ways to support HFS and get something really useful. Design for independent creators like YouTubers, vloggers, short filmmakers, and podcasters, this perk gives you access to a huge library of instrumentals, stems, and alternate versions to use in your own work. You also get a lifetime license agreement that allows you to use the material in your own work and share it online (including monetised on YouTube).
There are also some weird and wonderful bonus perks for people who want to go above and beyond. Snatch something nobody else has, like a notebook full of sketches and lyrics from Progress or a prop from a classic slomozovo video... Grab these perks QUICK.
We have only one big stretch goal this year. If we reach a total of £5,300, we will be able to host a launch party for the album next summer in London. Every Kickstarter backer over 18 will be invited to this completely one-off event. We'll get together and listen to the album, chat with the artists, hand out some HFS swag, and party until late.
If this sounds exciting and you really want to go, consider adding a little extra £ to your pledge to help us reach the stretch!
Risks and challenges
This project is relatively low-risk. Barring any kind of unforeseen tragedy, we'll be making this album. We would make it anyway, even if nobody wanted to listen.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
