Welcome to the Kickstarter for PBFB 2, a documentary-vlog series published on YouTube and created by Christopher 'Bing' Bingham! Please take a moment to read our story and check out the perks on the side...
What is PBFB?
PBFB stands for Past Bing Future Bing, an experimental web series which originally aired for one whole year between January 2011 and January 2013. In it, Bing documented his life non-stop for two years and then spliced it together. The result is a video diary that alternates between the past and present by exactly one year. 'Past Bing' talks to 'Future Bing', and 'Future Bing' talks back. For more information and to watch the original series, check out the official website.
You can also watch this playlist of favourite episodes.
I want to make another full-length series, filming two whole years and condensing it into one.
The History of PBFB
The original series entered production on January 17th 2011 and began airing on YouTube on January 17th 2012. After one year and over 360 videos (there was a data disaster, long story) it ended on January 18th 2013. In that time I graduated, moved house, began working as a freelance editor, producer, and presenter. My grandfather passed away, as well as close friend and collaborator Edd Gould.
PBFB captured a tumultuous year in not only my life but the lives of all my close friends.
In 2017 we celebrated the 5-year anniversary of the series with a month-long mini version called PBFB 2017. It ran for just one month from January 17th to February 18th 2017. In that time I struggled with depression, caffeine addiction, money troubles, moving house again, being an entrepreneur, and becoming a lecturer and public speaker.
PBFB 2017 was one of the most illuminating experiences of my life, highlighting how much was wrong and setting me down a path of serious self-improvement.
Today, in January 2019, I have launched another short season called PBFB 2019 (very imaginative). In it, the first month of my life in 2018 will contrast with the same time in 2019 and I will reflect on the year that passed in between. This time around I also invited some friends to participate in interviews about their own lives and experiences.
PBFB 2019 is more of a documentary about everyone's experience of time and growth, not just my own.
How will the project work?
You are helping to fund a series that will take over two years to complete. (Such is the nature of doing time travel the long way round!) IF we are successful, filming will begin in January 2020, and the series will start airing in January 2021. The whole thing will air for one year and conclude in January of 2022.
The start date of this series will be exactly 10 years since original Past Bing's FIRST VIDEO.
Here's the breakdown:
- 180+ Past Bing episodes, between 5-10 minutes long (that's over 15 hours of video)
- 180+ Future Bing episodes, 5-10 minutes long (that brings us up to over 30 hours)
- Including interviews and video messages from guests and backers
Your contributions will make this series possible. We simply can't make it without funding.
Your backing will help pay for editors, travel, and production expenses. Things like:
- Professional DIT and edit assistant for PB & FB
- BACKUPS! A cloud storage subscription and redundancies like RAID drives to make sure nothing is lost!!
- Travel expenses for attending community events
- Emergency and consumable expenses like lens repair, memory cards etc.
All of these things add up VERY quickly, with the priority and largest expense being hiring an editor. To make this series the best it can be I need a team. But I'll settle for just one amazing person.
Here's some quick maths:
Hiring an editor one day a week for roughly 50 weeks: £150 (minimum) x 50 = £7,500
Website costs (Squarespace): £180 per year x 2 = £360
Cloud backup subscription (VERY IMPORTANT): £60 per year x 2 = £120
Physical RAID backup storage (VERY SUPER IMPORTANT, at least 8TB): £330
Travel expenses: return flight to one international event or con per year x 2 = £1,000
Music licensing (Epidemic sound): £120
Emergency 5% (for unforeseen costs, accidents, repairs etc.): £470
Kickstarter fees (5-8%): minimum £500
That's a very conservative estimate.
What do you get?
You get to watch PBFB! If you loved the original or the anniversary, you can help make sure a sequel gets made. Bottom line: if you want to see it happen you need to back it.
Beyond that you get my gratitude. PBFB is the thing I am most proud of in the whole world. It's a testament to old-school YouTube, to growing up, to change, to stamina, and being so inspired that you can do the impossible.
You also get to be a part of the project itself. PBFB has never just been about one person, it's about how we all experience the passing of time. Most perks include the option to record a video message for yourself to be included in the series. You get to be part of this huge experiment and see yourself a year apart. There are also special keepsakes like pin badges, and experiences like video chats and behind-the-scenes access.
If you've read to the bottom and all that excites you, please check out the perks on the side and back our project!
Risks and challenges
A project like this is risky because nobody knows what life will throw at them. There might be days I am unable to film or edit, or I might become sick or injured and have to postpone things. But I will endeavour, as much as is humanly possible, to make the series no matter what. That's kind of the whole point!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
