- I'm recording a new CD!
My name is Laura Doherty. I write, perform and record catchy, acoustic folk-pop songs for kids and families! I’m based in Chicago and I'm in the midst of recording my 3rd kids CD titled In A Heartbeat, which is chock full of new original children’s songs that I have written over the course of 3 years. Many of my fans out there have been asking me when a new CD will be available. Well...it’s finally happening and what I’m asking for here is your support in helping make this CD a reality!
- I want the world to know -
I've been in the world of children's music part-time for over a decade, and 4 years ago I decided to leap into a kids music career full-time. I feel lucky to be able to make a living as a performing artist. I’ve performed solo and with my band in some amazing venues across the country including World Cafe Live in Philly, 92 Street Y in NYC, the Old Town School of Folk Music, Lollapalooza, the Pritzker Pavillion and countless libraries, schools and festivals! Last summer I was commissioned to create a music program called “Healthy Beats” for 30 City of Chicago libraries. Several songs I wrote for that program will be on the new record!
A little history...my path into music for kids began at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago in 1998 where I have worked and taught hundreds of children’s music classes in a wonderful early-childhood program called Wiggleworms. I love making music for kids and with kids.. and I can’t wait to share these new songs with you and your family!
- Project Overview
The new CD “In a Heartbeat” has a theme of love running through it. I poured my heart into these songs! I like that a heartbeat keeps a steady pulse, but that also we can feel our hearts beating when we love someone, or have a passion for something. Several of my well-loved animal friends will make an appearance in songs, such as Jazzasaurus the baby dinosaur, Domingo the Flamingo, and a fuzzy caterpillar called Woolly Woolly Bear.
I'm recording again with award-winning producer Rich Rankin at Mosaic Music studio in Chicago. Together we've co-produced 3 records... my Shining Like a Star, (2011) and Kids in the City (2009), and Old Town School of Folk Music's Wiggleworms Love You CD (2005), all available on iTunes.
The new CD features my amazing Chicago musician friends, including Rob Newhouse, Andy Wilkins, Michael Riendeau, Cat Tager, Rich Rankin, Ben Wright from the Henhouse Prowlers, Wiggleworms teachers: Dave Hamilton, Karen Banks-Lubicz, Erin Flynn and Anne-marie Akin...and Glenn Kotche from the famous alt-rock band Wilco came in to record on a track!
- CD Release and tour!
The CD's official release is Feb. 18, 2014 , with a special CD release concert at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago on Feb. 22. In addition to playing in and around Chicago, I plan is to tour more in 2014, performing in the midwest and around the USA!
I've set a goal to raise $10,000, which will help pay for the following:
And there are great rewards in it for you!
I’m offering some really cool rewards for donating! For just $30, you’ll receive a signed copy of my brand new CD hot off the presses, in advance of the release date, by February 14th...so ”In a Heartbeat” will be my Valentine’s Day gift to you! There’s lots more great rewards over there in the right hand column. ---->
Kickstarter Fees- 8-10% of my goal goes directly to Kickstarter and Amazon for hosting and transaction fees.
Recording- The very talented Rich Rankin of Mosaic Music will be producing, recording, and mixing “In a Heartbeat”. Studio time and all hours spent recording 13 tunes adds up!
Musicians- I work with a group of wonderfully talented Chicago musicians including Rich Rankin, Rob Newhouse, Michael Riendeau, Andrew Wilkins, and Cat Tager. There's a few surprise guest musicians on the CD too!
Mastering- This is the finishing touch on the record and makes it sparkle. Carl Saff mastering in Chicago is the best!
CD Duplication/Printing - Getting the CDs printed and hot off the presses for a February release!
Publicity- I have finally taken the big step of hiring an amazing publicist! I’m so excited to be working with Elizabeth Waldman Frazier of Waldmania PR who will be working hard to promote “In a Heartbeat” on a national level
Graphic Design and Art- Hugely talented Chicago illustrator Karen Pedone who designed my wagon logo will be designing the CD cover art, along with some cool buttons, posters and new T-shirts!
Postage - sending out all of the Kickstarter rewards to get to everyone on time will add up at the post office!
"In a Heartbeat" merchandise - printing new tees, buttons and posters
In reality, to successfully create, produce and promote "In a Heartbeat" will add up to over $15,000, so any additional funds raised beyond the will go towards all of these things listed above.
Your donation will help greatly to bring this CD to life!
Kickstarter is all or nothing! If we DON'T meet the goal, the project won't be funded (and your card won't be charged either) so please consider some of these amazing THANK YOU PACKAGES to the right! With all the amazing listeners, supporters, teachers, students and fan families I've met over the years, I am optimistic that I will meet this goal!
What can I do to help if I can not afford to donate financially? If you are unable to donate financially, please consider helping me spread the word via facebook, twitter, (and emailing the link to this project to friends). Word of mouth goes a long way!
Thank you all so much from the bottom of my HEART!!! xo--Laura
Risks and challenges
Being a DIY, independent musician certainly has its challenges, but I've been through the experience of putting all the puzzle pieces of a new album together and I'm confident that "In a Heartbeat" will release as scheduled, in February 2014! We've recorded 80% of the album, the cover artwork is underway, and mixing and editing is the next step!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
