We follow one of England’s greatest choir directors, Professor Edward Higginbottom, during the last weeks of his 38 years’ tenure at the helm of New College Choir, Oxford. In the process we are given a unique insight into his artistic and pedagogical skills and techniques at a most intimate and moving time in his long career. When we heard of Edward Higginbottom’s retirement we knew that it was vital that we recorded this once in a lifetime event and preserve his legacy for the future. We had just invested in new cinema cameras that enabled us to respond without delay and begin the project. This new, comparatively inexpensive, hardware enabled us to create artistic professional imagery. It is enhanced by the collaboration of experienced Director of Photography Léo Lefèvre, and Sound Engineer Grégory Beaufays, together with a small group of dedicated colleagues.

Genesis of 'Higgi, Inspiring Voices'

From L’Or des anges to Higgi, the authors' thoughts and ideas

Philippe Reypens, Higgi’s co-director, is an established figure among music lovers and choir fans alike since he authored the now classic documentary L’Or des anges, a recognised point of reference to all those interested in the field. On a related topic, he authored the short film A Slight Fever (aka Un peu de fièvre), which investigates the transient character of children’s voices. The latter film was co-produced by Loïc Porcher.

In early 2014, Loïc Porcher heard of Edward Higginbottom’s impending retirement from his position as Director of the New College Choir, Oxford. It was heartbreaking to him and to all those who loved his music who have followed his career. That heartbreak was the spark that lit our imagination to create Higgi. Time wasn’t on our side as we began in February 2014 and festive events linked to his leaving were to begin in Oxford in May to a last French concert tour date in July. As a result we had to move quickly and there was no time for us to spend weeks or months submitting our ideas to commissioning institutions or production companies. We decided to get on with it and not miss this wonderful opportunity to record Edward Higginbottom’s unique contribution to the choir.

We had to fund the initial production ourselves and were forced to reduce our professional team to the bare essentials — a director of photography, sound engineer and a boom operator! New College supported the project by providing us with accommodation and access to the wonderful settings of the Sheldonian Theatre and the Ashmolean.

One major aspect of the movie is to create on screen the timeless atmosphere of the ancient university from the 14th Century to the present day, seven hundred years later, that is created by the choir and the magical talents of Edward Higginbottom. In order to achieve this we used vintage lenses grafted onto our new digital cameras that captured the emotions of Edward and the choristers. The cameras are small and were discreetly positioned to ensure the subjects were oblivious of their presence.

To accompany the excellence of the moving image it was vital that particular attention was given to the audio recordings. We were particularly fortunate in having Grégory Beaufays, our Sound Engineer, who specialises in baroque music, having worked for ‘Label K617’, founded by Alain Pacquier.

Higgi, Inspiring Voices

Risks and challenges

As we say above, so far we have funded the project ourselves and have been supported in kind by New College, however, we now need your help with the post-production costs. These cover the a range of specialist skills and detailed work that includes the film editing, colour grading, sound editing and mixing, then the final costs of copying, transfers, DCP and the producing the broadcast-ready format.
It will be your help that allows us to produce ‘Higgi’ a celebration of the life and contribution of Edward Higginbottom and all the choristers who have given so much to the life of New College.

If with your help this crowdfunding campaign goes well beyond our expectations, we’d be able to speed up the whole process or even to produce a blu-ray version of Higgi.
