About

Update

We want to thank everyone who has shared their interest in HifiPix. Since the project started, we've been listening to your feedback and have made a number of significant (and exciting!) changes. It is going to take some time to reconfigure our Kickstarter campaign to better meet the needs and interests of the community. So instead of trying to get it all in during the remaining time, we're going to launch a new campaign several weeks down the road.

Please stay tuned to www.HifiPix.com or our Facebook page for more info.

Thanks for all your ideas and support,

-The HifiPix Team

HifiPix

Today’s cameras and connected devices make it very easy to take and display much higher resolution images than we normally see on websites.  We want to make it easy for anyone online to quickly see the detail and impact of those original images rather than just low resolution substitutes.

HifiPix software applications allow anyone to click on a HifiPix “enabled” website image to quickly grow the image to ten times the resolution.  This solves two major problems:

• You take a great photo, but in order to post it on a website, you need to create a lower resolution version which loses a lot of the quality and impact of the original. HifiPix automatically creates a “light” version for your site, but delivers an image quickly growing to ten times the resolution on request.

• You see a great photo on a website, but it has been resized and compressed and you want to see it in higher resolution.  HifiPix makes it easy to click on an image and grab the additional resolution you’re looking for.  What’s even more powerful: it lets you select any part of that website image to quickly “zoom up” just the high resolution portion of what you selected.

When you take a photo or create an image, you can upload it to a HifiPix enabled server just like you would any other content.  HifiPix saves the original but also creates a lower resolution “base” image.  This base image can be posted on the internet anywhere you want just like any other image, except that it also contains information about the location of the original high resolution image.  When a user clicks on the website image, it will activate the HifiPix viewer application and begin to grab additional resolution information from the high resolution image.

HifiPix stores high resolution images on a server that incrementally distributes resolution data when called by a client application. With Kickstarter, we will be building the server side software, a desktop client for Mac and PCs, as well as browser plugins for Firefox, IE, Chrome and Safari.  Ideally, this can be handled through simple JavaScript on the hosting site’s page, but since that will not always be available, the desktop client and browser plugins allow a more universal short-term step.

The basic innovation of our approach is that instead of just sending a high resolution image to replace a low resolution website image at the user’s request, we send packets of resolution data that incrementally grow that same website image through four larger sizes or resolutions.  The key is that we’re not sending new images every time but just the additional information needed to build the next higher resolution image from the previous image. And because of that incremental display of growing image quality we actually get to see the high resolution image evolve in front of us instead of waiting for a high resolution image that can typically take many seconds to download even with today’s high speed internet. It also allows for better zooming, area selection, and other cool features!

Note - We really want to ensure we are able to fulfill all the rewards we offer, and we recognize that the initial reward levels seem a bit small. We are only promising what's listed, but we also promise to offer much more if we can. You all have been good to us, and we'll do everything we can to return that to you, both at launch and over time.

Backer Page Listing and Link

Every reward level from $15 will include your name (unless you opt out) on our backer page, plus a link to your site.  Why a link?  We want to highlight people and places that love photography, graphics and high resolution.

Beta Access

Beta access includes two things.  It gives you early access to be one of the first to be using HifiPix, and it allows you to test the software and systems to help us make sure things are as seamless as possible.  We will do our best to communicate with you during the development process and to incorporate your feedback into our product launch.

HifiPix Bronze, Sliver and Gold Project Server Accounts

HifiPix technology requires a server to host the server software and the high resolution images.  Ultimately any server can be a HifiPix server, but to get things started we will create a HifiPix project server with user accounts in different storage sizes.  All accounts will be made available throughout the entire project.

HifiPix project server accounts allow you to store your full resolution images, plus any of the files that help HifiPix work. The base image that is created during the upload process can be posted anywhere on the web and will connect back to your HifiPix server content whenever someone using the HifiPix viewer software clicks on the base image.

Server Software

At higher levels, we'd like to make HifiPix server software available for people and organizations to host HifiPix images on their own servers. So rather than storing and hosting images on the HifiPix project server, images could be hosted anywhere and would link back to that location for the high resolution image content.

We have a lot of ambition for this project, and Kickstarter allows us to develop several different aspects of the project at once.  In fact, depending on how far we exceed our funding target we'll be pursuing stretch goals to make HifiPix even more pervasive for multiple platforms (including some cool things for mobile devices).

We also hope that you'll help spread the word and validate our basic assumption that pretty much everybody wants to see and/or share higher resolution images on the internet.  The ultimate success of this project really depends on HifiPix going viral in as many directions as possible.  We very much appreciate our Kickstarter backers as being the core organization that makes this happen, whether "Liking", "Sharing" or even Twittering and blogging about HifiPix.

For our part, we hope that you appreciate what we are trying to do, and that you will help us show people what they have been missing.  Any amount helps, and we'll do everything we can to make this happen as quickly as possible.

HifiPix will begin as a server system with browser plugins (all major browsers), plus local software for PC and Mac. Future improvements may also include mobile and social platforms as well, and we'll provide more updates on stretch goals as we get closer.

Risks and challenges

We are confident in our ability to create HifiPix software solutions. However, we recognize that sometimes delays or additional challenges may arise. Our biggest unknown is in adapting solutions to fit different web browsers and operating systems. Ideally, single scripted solutions would work, but we also want to have browser and desktop "backups" just in case a site isn't using the script. We recognize that there may be delays in the project, and that what we are trying to do is ambitious and has many moving parts and pieces. As with any project of this type, scope creep (adding additional cool features that subsequently delay the project) will need to be contained in order to hit our deadline. But don't worry. We'll be adding cool things and features as long as HifiPix keeps growing. We thank you in advance for your support!
