Enjoying your Defense Grid: Containment - Q&A

Posted by Hidden Path Entertainment, AMD & Razer (Creator)

Hi all, There have been a few questions asked several times - you might even call them "frequently asked", so we figured we'd send out an update with recent frequently asked questions and answers.

1. How do I play Containment again?

A: Your Containment Steam key was sent to you by email on either on November 21st (early beta backers) or December 6th and was from Jeff Pobst here at Hidden Path Entertainment.  It gave you access to the beta at that time, and then last Wednesday we updated the beta to have final content.  The type of key you received are the exact same type that will go on sale on Steam on January 23rd.  If for some reason you can't find your key any more, send an email to info [at] hiddenpath [dot] com from the same email address you use for your Kickstarter account and we'll resend your key to you.  Each email is different and has your unique Steam key in it, so you need to receive the one meant for you.

2. What about the Community Levels?

A: On December 20th, everyone was sent an email from that same Jeff Pobst guy with a key for the Community levels.  That content has been updated a couple of times, but is almost final.  There may be one more update early next week before the 23rd.  Again, if you can't find that email, email info [at] hiddenpath [dot] com from your Kickstarter account email address and we'll resend the unique key to you.

3. No, I have the keys, I just am not sure what to do with them.

A:  Ah, no problem.  So far we've given you 3 or 4 Steam keys depending on your pledge level.  The first either one or two keys (depending on pledge level) was sent to you on or near the day you pledged on Kickstarter using the Kickstarter messaging system.  The other two keys have come via email to the address Kickstarter gave us from your account in August.  To see the original Kickstarter message again, click on the Envelope icon at the top of the Kickstarter page, and look for the message thread you have with Hidden Path Entertainment.

Once you have all your keys, the first thing you need to do is make sure you have an active Steam account on your PC.  You can install the free Steam client and set up a free Steam account by going to At the top right is a grey button that says "Install Steam".  Click on that and follow the instructions.

Once you have the Steam client on your computer and you're logged into your account.  You next go to the Steam client and find the 5th menu item from the left at the very top of the window called "Games".  Under that menu item is a selection called "Activate a Product on Steam..."

Click on that and follow the instructions.  You need to install the main "Defense Grid: The Awakening" key first (or already have Defense Grid: The Awakening installed) and then after that you can install DLC codes using the same approach.  Go to Games-> Activate a Product on Steam, follow the instructions and enter a code for each item of content you have.

On the Library page, you'll see the Defense Grid: The Awakening entry.  All DLC appears inside the game and not in the library, so run Defense Grid, and then when you choose the Play item on the main menu, you'll go the Campaign Select screen and should see all the installed campaigns inside the game.  Click on any campaign (The Awakening, Borderlands, Resurgence (present depending on pledge level), You Monster (present depending on pledge level), and of course now Containment and Community Levels).

4. I pledged for extra digital content, when will I get more Containment keys?

A: That's next up on our list - we'll get to that very soon, before the game launches on Wednesday.  We'll send those Containment keys out to you by email.

Community Levels keys are free to any player with an email registration starting on Wednesday as well, so we won't send you extra keys of those, anyone you give a Containment key to can simply register and receive their own Community Levels key.

5. When will you ship the rest of the physical goods?

We just got the updated lists of who is getting what to the warehouse last night in the format they needed and last we heard, the warehouse had received all the different physical goods.  So starting Monday, they'll be assembling boxes and tubes with an array of posters, signed posters, T-shirts, USB gun towers, and Fletcher audio buttons depending on what your reward entails.  It will take some time for all the assembly and shipping to take place, and then the packages will be sent on their way to you using USPS or international mail.

We're still working on the art book and as soon as that is complete, we'll send out the pdf version electronically and the bound version by mail once it is printed.

6. What is happening with DG2?  Will you make it?  Will I get a copy?  When will it be done?

DG2 is a game that we have about half the money to make right now and are we are still short the amount needed to ensure completion.  We are working hard to raise the remaining amount of money and we believe shipping Containment has helped demonstrate that we can deliver on our promises, so that's helping in the discussions.  We've had some very good discussions and hopefully we'll have some good news to announce to you one of these days.  Once we have locked down all the needed financing for the development, we'll move forward with a team of folks on a schedule that will likely last us a year of development.  So once the money is set, it will take just about a year to complete the project and then get ready to ship it.  As we have promised to you earlier, when we are able to make DG2, yes, you'll get a copy of that too.  We greatly appreciate your backing and we're happy to include you on our road to making DG2 and in shipping that game as well.  For now, though, we are excited to be able to send you Defense Grid: Containment as that is what the Kickstarter was able to directly fund.

7. What's next?

Technically once we have shipped to you all the physical goods, we'll be "done" with the official part of the Kickstarter campaign.  We have worked together, raised the money, delivered our new Containment product to you, sent out your rewards, and accomplished this mission together.  Congratulations!!

We're also hoping though to keep this relationship going with you.  We have another game in development right now, and we're hoping that maybe when its ready for sharing, maybe you'll be interested in trying out a beta of it and giving us some feedback.  That likely won't happen for a few months, but if you're up for it, we'd love to engage with you around that game too.  We of course think you'll love it, but we'll have to see if you feel the same way.  It is a new type of game for us, so we'll see what you think.

Should DG2 get going here, we'll also engage with you on that.  Already we have a ton of input on the private forums about features you'd like to see, and once development gets underway, we'll be able to be more active on the DG2 feature side of things there, closing out features that are either going to make it or perhaps not, and returning votes back to people for them to use on new ideas or other ideas that inspire them.

Let us know if you have any questions.  We have really enjoyed this ride so far with you, and if you're up for it, we'll keep talking, collaborating, and enjoying fun game experiences together!

Defense Grid: Containment - Delivered!

Posted by Hidden Path Entertainment, AMD & Razer (Creator)

We just minutes ago upgraded your beta of Containment to FINAL!! Congratulations, you are now proud owners of Defense Grid: Containment, the same exact expansion that will go on sale on Steam next Wednesday, January 23rd.  Feel free to play it, talk about it, post about it, review it, etc.  It's yours early because you are backers, and the rest of the world gets to follow in your footsteps.

We want to thank you so much for your support.  You joined us this last summer on Kickstarter, we raised enough money to fund a new expansion, and we built it with your help, your feedback, your voting, and your support.  It's been a huge deal, and we're so excited to have this new approach in working with you on our games.

Now, we aren't forgetting that you wanted (and we wanted) a full sequel as well, and we're still working on that.  We're making a lot of progress in closing the funding gap between what we have and what DG2 will cost, and I hope to have more to tell you about that in the future.  When it does get made, you'll get a free copy of DG2 as well.  For now, though, we knew we'd have enough to make Defense Grid: Containment, and we did, and you're getting it, and we hope you really enjoy it.

Our initial Kickstarter business isn't yet complete.  Later this week, we'll get the extra game codes out to those backers who are getting extra copies of the digital content.

Also, next week, we expect Penny-Arcade to have all the manufactured goods recieved from the different manufacturers and start packing things up to send to you: T-shirts, USB gun tower sticks, Fletcher Audio buttons, Posters, Signed Posters.  It may take another week for assembly after they have the goods together and then they'll ship them off to you.  Make sure we have any last-minute address changes.

The art book just went into first draft, and we'll be working on that further, getting the pdf together for those who receive that, and the books together for those that receive them.

The new Containment trailer is below.  Thank you so much for making it happen!

The Big Scary Poster Signing Event

Posted by Hidden Path Entertainment, AMD & Razer (Creator)

Hello hello backers of Defense Grid!

We've been pretty quiet as we're getting very very close to shipping Containment to you and other Defense Grid players!  Thank you again for your support to help bring this product to life!  We'll have more to announce regarding Containment shortly including a release date later this month for the public, an earlier date when you the backers will receive it, and more!  IF things go as we hope (and we don't know yet if they will), we may have something final for you to play as early as NEXT WEEK!

One quick note, though.  One of the French voice actors was very sick the day we did the voice session so his audio files will be coming to us later than all the rest (from a make-up audio session).  This means that unfortunately the French version of the game might not be ready for backers as early as all the other languages, though it should still beat the retail release date by a couple days at least.

In the meantime I wanted to give you an update on rewards that remain to be shipped out.

The new posters just arrived from the printer and we think they're pretty cool. They'll be packaged up alone for those just getting one poster, or along with the signed posters for those getting both, and combined with T-shirts, USB gun towers & audio buttons as those arrive in from the manufacturers for those getting them.  We'll be combining your remaining rewards so shipping may not start for a few weeks.  The art book content is getting completed and the pdf file of the art book will likely be available next month to those receiving it.  The bound art book will then be shipped out to those backers getting that as well.

There will be extra game codes to send out once the game is launched as well for those backers who receive multiple copies.  We'll try to get those out between the time when your beta converts to the final product and when the real product ships on Steam.

Our most daunting and scary task that we had yet to plan was how we were going to get twenty-some people to sign 600 of the 2,000 posters that were printed in a reasonable time so that we weren't spending more time signing than developing games, and of course we didn't want to smudge or damage the posters either.

So, Jessica, our office manager extraordinaire, found a large multipurpose room with 30 banquet tables and we used that space to put out 120 posters at a time and had everyone snake around the tables signing the posters.  The system had us endlessly signing, with new posters ready for signature as we went back to the beginning.  Four more table changes and 600 posters were signed in full! Everyone signed in the same spot on each poster, so we'll work to get out a signing key so that you can know who signed where on your poster too!

In the end we weren't sure how long it would take.  We could imagine it taking as long as a five hours or more, but the team was super efficient in their signing and ended up signing 600 posters fully in just over 2 hours of time.  Who knew?  Well, now you do, should this info ever prove useful to you or others who have to do group poster signing.

Here are some pictures from our signing event this morning.  We're excited to get these over to the Penny Arcade folks for shipping now, who will get them boxed up, addressed and shipped out over the upcoming weeks.  We'll let you know when shipments start going out.

More info coming soon - stay tuned!

New Defense Grid Cast Members, Beta Updates and More

Posted by Hidden Path Entertainment, AMD & Razer (Creator)

Defense Grid: Containment development is accelerating at the office as we work to get all our content into the game and prepare to break for a holiday.  Before we take a break, we want to share the latest and greatest with you about Defense Grid: Containment.

New Cast Members!

You can see in the pictures below from our Monday recording sessions that not only are we adding two new characters to the Defense Grid universe in Defense Grid: Containment, but they’re voiced by AMAZING actors. Fletcher is back and voiced by the inimitable Jim Ward. But are you ready for this? The new characters are voiced by none other than Ming-Na Wen (you've seen her on ER, heard her as Mulan, and will watch her in Joss Whedan’s upcoming show S.H.I.E.L.D.) and Alan Tudyk (Wash from Firefly! Also in Suburgatory, Ice Age and Wreck-It Ralph).

We couldn't be more excited! With voice talent like this we decided to squeeze more story lines of dialogue into Defense Grid: Containment (157 story lines) than there were in the entire original game (135 story lines) or even in You Monster (118 story lines), so expect a new story adventure that bridges us to the future of Defense Grid in addition to the 8 new levels of play.

New Update

Minutes ago we updated your beta build one more time.  First off, by popular internal demand (the folks want you to see the cool stuff that is coming), we've added the mission images as they'll be in the final product.  Consider that a teaser on how the levels will look and what you'll see when the final art is in.  We've adjusted the story script on a level or two based on statistics we've collected from your play, and you'll see that some of the lighting changes that have been applied to the final levels have leaked over into some of the placeholder levels - this affects level 4 more than any other - but don't worry, that's temporary until the new art appears in a few weeks.  One other side effect of developing both for final and for beta is that many of the scripts now have pauses in them for the final dialogue that was recorded this week, so you'll get some unusually long delays at the end of some levels where talking would otherwise be taking place.  You can fast forward through those wait times and accumulate interest during that time too!

One More Bonus!

In addition to an update on the DG:Containment beta, we're about to give you a early preview of the new free DLC that we'll also be shipping: the Community Levels that you have voted on!  You'll soon be receiving another email with another Steam key, and when you enter in that Steam key, you'll get access to four levels designed by the community and with a thin art layer / varnish applied by our team.  Keep an eye out for this upcoming Steam key in your email.

Happy Holidays

Again, thank you so much for being a Defense Grid backer.  We're excited to be bringing you Defense Grid: Containment and we're looking forward to unveiling the finished product to you after the new year.

Thanks so much!

Mode Explosion

Posted by Hidden Path Entertainment, AMD & Razer (Creator)

Hi Defense Grid backers,

Just a quick update to let you know that we've expanded the Beta to include challenge modes for each of the maps and we've updated some of the story mode scripts (Level 4 & 8 in particular have been updated).  Also, we've added a fix for aliens getting stuck, so we believe this should remove the problem for you.  Let us know if you still see any stuck aliens once you have the update.

In other quick news, Jeff Pobst's PAXDev 2012 keynote on the Defense Grid Kickstarter is now up on our YouTube channel to watch.  It's an hour of details about the game's history and data and planning behind putting on the Kickstarter.  It isn't necessarily riviting entertainment by any means, but if the business story of Defense Grid and the business story of our Kickstarter is the kind of thing you'd like to dive into you can watch it here.

See you on the Beta!
