Customizing Your Rewards - New Tiers for You

Posted by Hidden Path Entertainment, AMD & Razer (Creator)

Hi Folks,

Before we head into our final week of the Defense Grid 2 Kickstarter, we wanted to respond to the community who has been asking to have more control of the pledge rewards they desire than the Kickstarter model really supports.  Because you can only choose one dollar amount and one reward tier, typically we make rewards cumulative.  But, we have often heard from folks: "Hey, I'd like this thing that is expensive, but I don't need all the things that come before it.  Can you make it easier for me to get?"

So, to ensure that we're still being fair to folks who have already bid at higher rewards (we're very thankful to them for their support), and to give folks who don't have as much money at their disposal access to prime AMD video cards (at less than their retail cost!), we've opened up new tiers that let you add one of the two video cards to any other tier.  We've also added a tier that lets you add a USB stick and Fletcher Fortune Button to any other tier as well.

Basically if you choose the new tiers, you can add $70 to your pledge on top of any existing tier to add an AMD Radeon HD 6770 video card to your pledge rewards ($90 if international), $75 to add the USB stick & Fletcher Fortune Button to your pledge rewards ($85 if international), and $90 to your pledge to add an AMD Radeon HD 6870 video card to your pledge rewards ($110 if international).

IMPORTANT:  For us to recognize that you are desiring this, not only do you need to add money to your total pledge amount, but you MUST choose the newly added add-a-thing tier level appropriate for your choice so we can keep track of how many of these add-on tiers we will be supporting.

Each day, we'll message any new folks on these tiers to verify that we know which base tier they are adding the video card or USB stick & button to. From there we should be able to better open up the limits to make sure that we don't run out of video cards for the people who are pledging in order to receive them.

Let us know if you have any questions in the comments or you can always email us through the Kickstarter messaging system.

I'm quite sure that the campaign will cross the magical border of $250.000 - but I think you could have gone much higher. Maybe next time? (Do I hear DG3? :) - And go for a web usability guy then.)

@Adam don't worry. $2000 in 3-4 hours si pretty good... $600 in last hour or so. And another +$400 right now( 5 backers). And another $15(one backer). WOW!!

      Hi Dominik,

You are correct, we were balancing the strong requests of the users on the forum with the increase in support and explanation. Definitely doing a lot more explanation. :)

    6. Dominik Deobald on

Actually it seems to be okay to pledge $85 to get the game and the Radeon. Okay... Maybe even I didn't read and understand it all at first (the weird "(2) Add [some amount which is $15 lower than the amount mentioned above]" part) ;)

    7. Dominik Deobald on

@ViRUS: You overestimate the attention span of a typical web user. In my experience this is what usually will happen:
      - User comes to campaign page.
      - User watches video
      - User starts to read first block of text where it (finally) says: "You'll get DG2"
      - 80% of users go for $15 or maybe $30 tier. They wont continue to read, but that's okay. They'll just go for the small tiers.
      - 20% of users keep reading and check out the bigger tiers. They go up to $85 and see "Add-A-Thing: Add a Radeon". That's where most of them will stop reading. They'll just assume "Okay - I get the game and I add a Radeon". Click, $85, done...

Quite honestly i don't think it's that confusing.

    9. TheChosenOne on

Agreed. This could have been handled much easier with a question at the survey on the end of directly messaging you. Think that would have prodided a better overview. Now you will have people switching and not but stil increasing their pledge.

Ungh... You're trying to do stuff with a system that has never been designed to do that. Let's hope you didn't make it to difficult now and people are still going to join in... My feeling is that there is too much text now. On the web people don't want to invest a lot of time to understand a webpage.

OK, I got it now. I had the tier selection the wrong way around. Thanks for the help. Yes, green one please :)

    12. Hidden Path Entertainment, AMD & Razer Creator on

Oh, and for the tier, no, you left it on the mouse one, but you'll want to change it to the add-a-tier one. We have a record that you were previously on the mouse (green I now see), so that will of course be our first guess when we go through the add-a-tier pledges

    13. Hidden Path Entertainment, AMD & Razer Creator on

I agree completely with the math - I'm realizing though that I may not be able to tell which color mouse tier you came from. So, we likely will need to know that when I email you shortly. :)

I just adjusted my pledge from the $325 level to the $225 level (Razor) + $90 for the 6870 and adding $60 ($40 + $20) for international shipping. Can I check that I have selected the correct add-a-thing tier for my pledge?

    15. Hidden Path Entertainment, AMD & Razer Creator on

      Hi Adam,

Gotcha. Then your current $120 level is best because at this point we decided not to do the add-a-thing for T-shirts as the complexity got even greater and the price seemed too much to make it all work. The fact you don't want the USB gun tower and the posters does make it more complex, and we can not ship them to you pretty easily, but we don't have a good way of decreasing your pledge to "not" get them. Obviously if Kickstarter had a different more ala-carte system, we could better do that.

Yes, that is correct. The 6770 requires your PC to have one X16 lane graphics PCI Express slot and a 450 Watt or greater power supply The 6870 requires your PC to have one X16 lane graphics PCI Express slot and a 500 Watt or greater power supply.

i was/am at the $55 (rewards of $75) so to add the 6770 I would need to pledge $125 and select the $85 level correct? (and the 6870 would be $135 with the $105 level?)

I haven't been much into video cards lately as its mostly a work machine, but its too good to pass up, does the 6870 require 2 power inputs?

    19. Hidden Path Entertainment, AMD & Razer Creator on

Sorry, it's always a balance between giving the customization people desire and confusing people. FIrst concept to be aware of - dollar amount you pledge and pledge reward tier are two separate things. You can pledge any amount, and then you are allowed to pick a pledge tier at that amount or any amount lower. So, knowing that, the first thing to do if you want to add for example, a 6870 video card (additional cost of $90) to your existing pledge (of say $50) is change your pledge amount to $140. Then chose the $105 pledge tier that shows you are adding in a video card. We'll do the subtraction, look at your previous tier, and email you back, saying - we believe you to be wanting the video card and the contents of the $50 pledge tier, is this correct. You hopefully would say "yes". And we'd be done. If you were having the card delvered outside the USA, you would change your pledge amount in this example to $160 which covers the additional $20 of shipping required. The original $50 tier had no additional shipping so you don't to take that into account as well.

Does that help clear things up?

I think it means add $20 for international shipping if needed.

What Andrew said. Looking at the new $85 option it says I add the original price of the tier I want ($15) plus $70 for the Radeon. That would be the $85 in total, the cost of the tier. Okay, I grasp this. People take the tier they already pledged to, add $70 to it then pledge that amount to the $85 tier.

But what the hell is "include $20 for the Radeon HD 6770 video card?" What $20? I thought I was adding $70 for the Radeon. It's it $20 in addition for the $70? What? Why?

I'm in a rush so I'm pledging $85 for now. I'll fix it to $105 later if I have to.

    23. Keavon on

Agreed. Very confusing. I'd suggest just telling people to add that much to any pledge level, and message you to say that they want to add the thing. This also allows us to add something to a limited reward tier.
Please add one for a T-Shirt! And maybe one to split up the Fletcher Fortune Button and Flash Drive.

      This is extraordinarily confusing.
