The Defense Grid 2 Journey - One Last Reward Below

Hello DG2 Team,

We come to the end of a long road started right beside you, on a journey began together some 2 1/2 years ago today.

Defense Grid: Containment was created with your help and support, adding new levels, new puzzles, continuation of the story, and expansion of the world first introduced in the original game.

And once we had the support and backing of a few others we were then able to take on the adventure that became Defense Grid 2.  All the tower building and alien invasion of the first, but now with new levels, new game modes, new multiplayer modes, user created content, dynamic levels, tower items, multiple levels of difficulty, real time score comparison, a new graphics engine, and more.

Along with the Defense Grid 2 game, you've had the opportunity to watch behind the scenes as we make games at Hidden Path Entertainment, whether it be through the 10 part Polygon series or the deeper version of the electronic Making of Defense Grid 2 book included in your special edition by Russ Pitts.

Author Mary Robinette Kowal not only contributed to the expanded story in DG2, but also wrote the standalone Defense Grid: Matter of Endurance audioplay which also shipped with your special edition and created an additional story experience separate from the game featuring General Fletcher, Simon, Cai, and a new character Governor Teydell.

Electronic or hardcover versions of art books from both games have now been sent your way inside the special edition or via postal service (the hardcover Art of Defense Grid 2 books have all shipped out now including those requiring international shipping which just went out this week).

There have been thousands of shipments of video cards, mice, posters, t-shirts, audio buttons, and gun tower USB sticks.  We've delivered ringtones and the soundtrack from the first game and wallpaper images in multiple high resolution formats. We created private forums and provided early beta access to different backers.  Cheat codes were designed and included in the first game and personalized voicemail messages from Fletcher were provided. Names were incorporated into the story and the backstory.

And the credits - so many names have made it into the credits, both of an updated original game and in DG2 (where you could speed up / slow down and go backwards through the credits to find your name if you didn't know that).

Only one last perk remains and today we're delivering it to you right here and right now:

  • Click THIS LINK to download the DG2 soundtrack, audio notes, and ringtone versions of the soundtrack for your mobile phone.  We hope you have a lot of fun with these assets.

And with that, more than anything, we hope that you were able to enjoy the game that you helped get made.  We hope you have enjoyed the entertainment that we've created for you and that you've been able to "protect the cores" in the way that you do so that is so different from how others protect their cores.

Our team will continue to monitor and address issues found in the game where we can.  Our recent conversations with Microsoft appear to have led to Xbox One multiplayer becoming active again as it seemed down and matchmaking wasn't available for a few weeks.  We're still not sure exactly what happened there as we didn't do any updates on the game.

We've recently addressed several Mac bugs, but are waiting as our colleagues at AMD release a new driver through Apple that update a group of their video cards that have some lighting issues that we aren't able to work around.

And on the topic of User Created Content, we're excited to see the map download sites that exist and expect to be able to add several new levels to the In-Game Store once the Steam Workshop for partners fully opens up and becomes operational - which should happen any day now.

If you've played through the game feel free to drop by Metacritic or the Steam Page or let others know how you feel about the game.  Game Informer is running a poll on what players think are the Top Games of the Year (including the Strategy category).  They'd love you to swing by and Vote for what you think.

Thanks so very much for your support along the entire journey!

DG2 - November Book Release!

Greetings and Salutations!

We're happy to announce that Russ Pitts has completed his 312 page book on The Making of Defense Grid 2, and your Defense Grid 2 Steam Special edition has just been electronically updated today so that your launch-day preview of his ebook has been fully replaced with the final complete edition!

Here's the official "inside the book cover jacket" BLURB:

THE MAKING OF DEFENSE GRID 2 brings you behind-the-scenes of the creation of a modern video game. Over nearly two years and hundreds of hours of interviews, veteran video game journalist Russ Pitts (Polygon, The Escapist) has been given total access to every stage of development, and dives deep into the technological innovation, creative artistry and hard-nosed business that combine over weeks, months and years to make a game. From moments of startling inspiration to times of crushing stress, the author has been present for every aspect of production — major milestones, critical beta tests and sometimes contentious design meetings.

Sit back, relax, and read the pdf file included with your Steam special edition on your computer screen, or feel free to email it to your favorite e-reader device and read the book on the go.  It's yours to read and enjoy, and you can revisit the events behind the scenes and learn more about all the folks on the development team you met reading the Polygon series, but in greater detail and with thousands of additional words of new content.

Thanks much to Russ Pitts for sharing his book with all the folks on Kickstarter and who purchased the Steam special edition.

DG2 To You - Now

Hi,

I've spent the last 40 minutes working over a hot mail-generator program and it looks like all the one key and three key emails have now been sent.

Congratulations, your DG2 keys should now all be in your possession!

Before sending I downloaded the latest and greatest email address that your accounts have on file with Kickstarter and 6,264 emails appeared to leave without problem with about 27 of the emails bouncing back as undeliverable.  We'll try to investigate the bounces and the DG2 keys to their rightful owners, but in the meantime...

DG2 To You - Tomorrow

Hi Team,

This is it.

DG2 is about to ship. We’re there! Tuesday is ship day. And… wow.

The game is out there, shipped to the console manufacturers, about ready to go to Steam, and it’s time to share it with you. First off, Russ Pitts finishes his 10-part Polygon series (there were actually 10 of those articles,… wow!) on the making of Defense Grid 2 – please enjoy the latest in his series of watching a game get made.

http://www.polygon.com/features/2014/9/19/6422241/making-defense-grid-2-the-end

We agreed to the idea of allowing a reporter to watch the process in part because of you.  You had backed us on Kickstarter and wanted to be involved in as many ways as possible and this type of transparency felt like a way to share with you the process we go through to work to entertain you in the best way we know how.  So unusual a thing, yet we are glad that it worked out so well.

What's Next?

So, here is a list of what is going to happen on our road to get you DG2 and a list of answers to questions you may be asking:

1.  Beta: The beta has just been turned off by Valve. All the beta keys are now expired and will stop working. Only backers, press and paying customers will continue forward!

2.  Prep: Now that the beta is down, we’ll need some time to put up our final build up on Steam, do some final testing and then give you access to it. I’m guessing that it will be tomorrow (Saturday) before we give the green light to let players in to the full version of the game.

3.  Keys: Then we will send to YOU final Steam Special Edition keys (using the email that you have given Kickstarter). Each of you will get one, and some of you will get 3 per your Kickstarter pledge level. Those Special Edition keys will include all of the following content:

  • Defense Grid 2
  • The Art of Defense Grid (pdf file)
  • The Art of Defense Grid 2 (pdf file)
  • The Making of Defense Grid 2 ebook (pdf file)  FYI - you'll get a book excerpt for launch, the full ebook will be updated in December 2014
  • A Matter of Endurance Audio Play (English cast performance)

4.  Steam Keys: The keys will redeem on Steam and work for Windows, Mac, and SteamOS.

5.  Mac & SteamOS Status: Today, the Windows build is in good shape. We're going to fix a few bugs over the weekend and on Monday, but it's very very close to ship ready. The Mac and SteamOS/Linux builds do play single player well on higher end machines, but they still have some bugs, crashes, multiplayer issues, and performance work left to be done. Looking at the progress the team has made, I unfortunately don’t expect that Mac & SteamOS will be fully performant and up to our standards on Tuesday as we were hoping to do.

For those of you who are focused on Mac and SteamOS I expect that there will be 1-3 weeks post-launch while we continue to update the Mac & SteamOS builds and get them to the ship quality they deserve. We apologize for not having all 5 platforms ready for September 23rd, but Mac and SteamOS are very close.

You as a SteamOS or Mac player can wait until we give the “all clear” – or you’ll have an early build of the final product on Monday or Tuesday and that will get updated multiple times as it becomes a finished product within weeks.

6.  DRM: Though we are using Steam, we have turned the DRM off. That means that while you do need Steam to install the game, after it is installed, you should be able to uninstall Steam and continue to play the game offline. Obviously none of the online features (multiplayer, leaderboards, friends leaderboards, score comparison, achievements, etc.) will work if you are offline or not connected to Steam, but it is a DRM free build of the game that you can enjoy the single player campaign and all of the challenge modes.

7.  No Console Codes: Several people have asked if we can provide you console codes of the game and the answer as we know it: is unfortunately no. This is because we don’t have codes for the console versions of the game to give you. We have asked both Sony and Microsoft if they would be willing to give us enough codes to share with our backers (both companies have said that they are interested in supporting game Kickstarters in the press), but so far the answer we have received is “no” from our queries.

8.  Languages: The PC version of the game will have full audio in English, German and French, and will support those languages in text as well as Spanish, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Korean, and Japanese. Later we’ll add Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese text support to the Steam version – likely 3-4 weeks away.

9.  Extra Map Offer: I’m not sure when it will go live, but we’ll also have an offer where players register off of a link on the new launcher and for that registration, we’ll send you a Steam DLC code for the Designer’s cut of Level 16: Double-Take. We don’t have a way to automatically give that to you, so go ahead and register and you’ll receive the code and be able to redeem it for the free DLC once that offer goes live.  It may not be live until early next week.

10.  What remains? After we ship these keys to you, we have some physical art books to fulfill, we need to put the soundtrack for DG2 in a place for those backers who get it to download it, and then we believe that brings this Kickstarter to a close.

It has been a crazy crazy ride over the last couple years with you and we are so appreciative and so thankful for your participation. We hope you really enjoy Defense Grid 2 and that it meets your expectations and delivers a fun and entertaining experience.

With that – protect the cores!!!

And thank you so much for all of your support!

August Acceleration – The Road to September 23rd

Hi Backer Team,

As you may know Defense Grid 2 now has a street date and that date is Tuesday September 23rd. Looking at the calendar, that’s just one short month away from today. That game is not yet “done,” but it is very close. This week we’ll be submitting our builds to Sony and Xbox One with the goal of passing their certification processes and being ready for download on the ship date.

It is always possible that we’ll have updates for those builds as well, but right now, we’re going into the certification process with the expectation that those updates won‘t be needed early.

The Steam builds are behind the console builds a bit (because the console builds need the lead time of submission), but they will catch up over the following week and take all the fixes and updates that have been going into the console builds. We get to directly push the game out live ourselves on Steam, so we’ll be able to test and update right until launch. We also have a few Steam-only features – such as the in-game Store for player levels – that need to be finished, so we’ll be working on that too.

The beta will likely get updated as well and we will pull over many fixes from other testing we’ve done, other improvements we’ve made and other bugs we’ve fixed. We’ll see how compatibility and minimum system performance is, and likely do some additional multiplayer testing with the beta participants. We likely will turn off the Steam beta a week or more just before launch. Before that happens, we’ll send out new final codes to you that will be the retail Steam Special Edition codes for the game at that time.

Pre-sales trends are good and we expect to cross into Tier 2 for the preorder campaign sometime this week if things continue as they have been on Steam http://store.steampowered.com/app/221540/ . It is going to be close on whether pre-orders include the Matter of Endurance audio book in the end or not. We believe we will cross that threshold based on extrapolations the 505 Games folks have done, so we already got to work on it, and are about half-way done with its development. You as backers will definitely get it, but we’ll see what happens on the pre-order side of things.

A Matter of Endurance author Mary Robinette Kowal just won her SECOND Hugo award for Sci-Fi writing last week in London, and we couldn’t be more happy for her (She won for the Novelette “The Lady Astronaut of Mars” which you can read, right now, right here:  http://www.tor.com/stories/2013/09/the-lady-astronaut-of-mars ) . It’s been amazing to collaborate with her on A Matter of Endurance as well as the backstory world-building elements and the parallel out-of-game story for Defense Grid 2.

Overall, It is a busy and intense time here at the studio – every day we think we may have “the build” and then many hours of testing later, we find that “that issue” may be enough for us to correct it and make another “the build.” We also just got back from Gamescom promotional meetings showing the PC game and editor to the press (mostly the same editor and build of the beta that you have), and then this upcoming week is PAX Prime in Seattle, and we plan to have Xbox One, PS4, and PC builds on the floor to play for those who visit.

You’ve been hugely supportive of us, and many thousands of hours of beta playing has helped us tremendously as we work to balance, adjust, and touch up the different elements of the game. You’ll see a ton of small changes and fixes when we are able to focus back on the beta and get that last update to you before we head for the final ship.

Thanks so much for your support. Defense Grid 2 is coming to you soon – and we’re so excited about it. People who test and play it are having a lot of fun, so we’re cautiously optimistic that you’ll love it too.
