For When You Can't Sleep At Night began as a personal mission to document as many of my thoughts as possible. I began making comics about my experience with depression in the middle of 2014, attempting to somehow make sense of my thoughts and feelings. (As you can guess by the title, many of these were made during late, restless nights.) When I started posting them online, a strange thing happened -- people from around the world started to send me messages about their own struggles with mental illness. Some were absolutely heartbreaking accounts of their experiences; many were thank-you's. All of them seemed to come from people who could relate to the drawings and words I was putting out there, and I realized that I had found a unique way to bring people together.
I continued to upload comics throughout the next few years, and the messages never stopped. I was asked occasionally if I'd ever make a book. After many months of gathering enough courage, I decided it would be a significant expansion of the community I have created through my webcomic. My hope for this project is that it would open up more spaces for discussion about mental illness and the other parts of life that most people don't want to talk about.
The final book will be a soft cover, 60-page collection of short comics. ~15 of the comics will be ones I have already published on my blog, but the majority will be new ones that have never been seen before.
All of the comics will revolve around my personal experiences with depression, self-care, the stigma surrounding mental illness, seeking professional help, sharing with (or keeping things from) friends and family, hopelessness, grief, and anxiety.
These are a few of the comics I've already published on my blog, http://heyskys.tumblr.com.
The project has successfully reached its fund goal in less than 24 hours. I am blown away by all of your support and interest -- I can't thank you all enough.
I'm hard at work creating the best product possible and I hope that you're all as excited for it as I am. But wait, we still have 28 days to go! I've decided to introduce the first stretch goal:
If we reach $2,000, I will send out sticker sheets to everyone who has backed $25 or more. Here is a prototype of the sticker sheet; I will post a final version when we reach the stretch goal so you know exactly what you'll be getting in the mail!
Thank you so much again!
Hey everyone -- we have reached the $7,000 mark!! Thank you so much!!!
I've been thinking about a new stretch goal, and I have decided to add a new reward tier...
If we reach $10,000, I will be opening up this reward tier! Everyone who backs at least $75 will receive a custom tote bag with my design!
I'm actually really excited about this reward because I want one for myself. Let's see if we can make the goal!!
Risks and challenges
15 of the short comics are already inked and colored, and the rest of the material is well under way. The entire proof for the book will be completed by the end of the campaign. The biggest challenge is getting fully funded so that I can get the books printed and shipped out to everyone who ordered them. Even if you can't make a pledge, please share this with anyone you know who many be interested! The more eyes on it, the more likely it will be funded!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
