Thanks to your support and participation this campaign was a success! We are so appreciative, thankful and moved by the hundreds of people all over the world that trusted and supported us with the mission of creating this documentary about the inspirational art of Ohad Naharin.
If you still want to join us and be a part of this film that will inspire dance lovers and audiences around the world and get a valuable souvenir, please visit the support and donation page on our website
Because of you Tomer Heymann and the Heymann Brothers Films will be able to complete this 7-year journey and release “Mr.Gaga” in 2014 in conjunction with the Batsheva Dance Company 50th anniversary!
We are far from done and continue working very hard to make the "Mr Gaga" the best documentary possible. See below how we will be using the additional funds raised.
THANK YOU SO MUCH ALL OUR AMAZING BACKERS! We never expected to reach our goal a few days before the deadline. We want to share with you the things we will do before the release of the film in mid-2014 with the funds that we manage to raise above our goal:
Thanks to this Kickstarter campaign we already were able to do some additional shooting of "Decadance" and the latest creation of Ohad Naharin "The Hole". If we raise additional funds we will be able to shoot the new 2014 season of the Batsheva Dance Company. It can be fantastic for this film: this season the works "Mamoutot" and "Virus" that were not staged for over 10 years and are landmark Naharin’s creations.
Thanks to the amazing support of all of you we were able to research more deeply and we found 5 dancers from the original cast of the Ohad Naharin Dance Company in New York who are now in their 60’s! If we raise additional funds we will be able to fly our crew from Israel over to the U.S. to film them and to discover another amazing chapter in Ohad Naharin's career.
You have already seen all the amazing archive footage that we need to acquire for this film. If we raise additional funds we will be able to make HD Blow-UP for some of it, transferring the unforgettable moments that made dance history for all the future generations.
Music rights are probably one of the most expensive part of documentary production! We have more than 15 music pieces that were used in Ohad Naharin's creations that can be features in the film, from such legendary composers as Arvo Part. We are making an original score for “Mr.Gaga”, but with additional funds we will be able to acquire the original music. This music is integral to Naharin’s art and would enrich the film immensely.
Remembering Mari Kajiwara 1951-2001
At the end of our journey together, I thought a lot about Mari Kajiwara and missed her. I had the privilege to know her and see her work, and I was very moved to find this rare archive material. I would like to share it with you:
As time passes, Mari’s deep significance in Ohad’s life becomes clearer to me. Ohad arrived in New York penniless, with hardly any English, and started building a life. One evening he attended an ‘Alvin Ailey’ performance, and saw “the most beautiful woman in the world”, but he knew that he did not have a chance with her. She remained an unrealized fantasy, someone to dream about but not to touch.
Some time later, on a visit to Israel, another beautiful woman stands beside him in the elevator, and they strike up a conversation. They arrange to go to a party together, and three months later, they get married. Sitting with her in a coffee shop, he tells her about the dancer he saw in New York. When he describes the performance and the dancer’s part, she smiles shyly, and whispers quietly – that was me. That is how Ohad Naharin and Mari Kajiwara’s love story began… and lasted 23 years.
Mari died of cancer on Christmas 2001, and left a huge void. The film describes her meaningful role in Ohad’s life, in the life of Batsheva Dance Company, and will be dedicated to her.
Seven years ago I proposed to Ohad Naharin that we set off on a journey. For years he'd refused to allow a camera into his studio, when finally I earned his trust. Since then, I have traveled with him to seven countries, and filmed more than 650 hours of footage. Hours of intimate moments in the studio and of Ohad’s personal life, together with rare archive materials.
I want to dispel the mystery around the man named Ohad Naharin, to peel back the layers, and truly understand the connection between his complex personal biography and the art that touches so many hearts all over the world.
This is a very complex and costly production. Which is why we decided to turn to you and invite you to take part and help complete the film. To enable me to go as far as possible with the film I’ve dreamed of making all these years. Now is the time to complete it, in time for the 50 year anniversary of the Batsheva Dance Company in 2014.

Risks and challenges
Our goal is to finish the film for a premiere in the spring of 2014. We have collected an incredible amount of footage, never-before-seen material, and much, much more. Our editing team together with Tomer and Barak Heymann will be working around the clock to combine all this into a one-of-a-kind documentary on Ohad Naharin and Batsheva Dance Company.
All of the incentives, apart from the DVD and special events, will be sent immediately after we finish the campaign and collect all the contact information of the backers. These will include artwork of the Batsheva Dance Company and Ohad Naharin, other films by the Heymann Brothers, a book by Gadi Dagon, a rare vintage one-of-a-kind original Ohad Naharin poster from 1984, certificate for Gaga classes in a city near you, postcards, etc.
However, the expected delivery of the DVD and digital download will depend on the terms of the distribution and festival screenings in each territory. Right now we estimate the delivery of the DVD by the end of 2014.
Special events such as private screenings with the filmmakers and events involving Ohad Naharin will have to be arranged separately based on availability and travelling schedule. They do not include travelling expenses. Gaga movement language classes will have to be scheduled with a Gaga teacher / Dance center hosting Gaga classes in a city near you! In Japan the Gaga movement language classes are limited to 2 introductory classes in selected studios in Tokyo and Osaka areas.
3 one-hour sessions in person or on skype with Barak or Tomer Heynmann and/or the One-day workshop might include consultations in any stage of the development of your documentary or other audio-visual project: character development and research, fundraising and pitching, shooting and editing, archive and post-production, festivals strategy, sales and distribution strategy.
We feel an enormous responsibility to create the best, deepest, most interesting and exciting film possible, and we are confident that with your kind support – it is possible and it will happen!
Thank you for your cooperation and for helping us to make this dream a reality – to share with as many people around the world the extraordinary art of Ohad Naharin – Mr. Gaga.
