Designed by Marek Raczyński and Adam Kwapiński (a man behind such smash hits as Lords of Hellas and Nemesis), Hard City is a tactical adventure board game in a unique new retro setting, heavily inspired by B-class action movies and the atmosphere of the 1980s era! One of up to five players takes the role of Doctor Zero - an evil mastermind sending mutants to the streets and trying to take control of the metropolis, while others play as brave Hard City Police Officers fighting to stop him! Solo and full co-op rules are also coming!

Hard City is a scenario-driven (in this case, Episode-driven, like a TV show!) asymmetrical miniature board game of adventure and tactical conflict on the mean, mutant-infested streets. What makes it stand out?
The cinematic awesomeness of the VHS era can be found in the story, art and style of the game, but also deep within the mechanisms of Hard City. To make your experience even more thrilling, we created a unique Cutscenes mechanism that the Officers may use while fighting mutants!
The game comes with a selection of cutscenes, visualized on tiles drawn each round and added to one another to form an actual film tape! They represent crucial moments in the plot of the current Episode. The events in each cutscene are triggered once per game after the Officers have met the scene's requirements.
You may choose any scene that is further on the track than the current one, but remember to choose wisely. Once you go ahead, you can't go back!
The Hard City board consists of three double-sided parts, making each Episode unique in terms of setup. Every part of the story takes place in a different city location and in the Grand Finale... the game box is used as a playable component, being the Zero Corp headquarters!
Hard City can be played as a "1 vs all" game, or in the co-op/solo mode. In "1 vs all", one player takes the role of the evil mastermind Doctor Zero, while the other players are the Hard City Police Department Officers, fighting mutants and rescuing civilians.
Our game is scenario-based and divided into Episodes - like an old police television drama! Each Episode is perfectly playable (and replayable!) on its own, but together they form a complete story of Doctor Zero's rise and fall and the Officer's epic fight against him.
Hard City plays as a "1 vs all" game, but the solo/co-op modes are in development right now and will be included in the box as well!
In the core rules, Police Officers spend Action Points (yes, AP markers are shaped as donuts!) to move, shoot, tackle hideous mutants in close combat, and to evacuate hapless civilians. They make use of their equipment, allies and unique spectacular Cutscenes to achieve Episode objectives.
Each turn only one Officer is activated. Then the devious Doctor Zero gets to act, playing cards to command his mutated horde. He may spawn and move his minions, attack civilians and Officers, and perform spectacular special actions like Garbage Throw, Sinister Laughter or Evil Masterplan. Too far out to appear on the board himself, Doctor Zero has a card or a mutant for any job!
After the campaign we will also release rulebooks in English, French, German, Polish and Spanish as downloadable PDFs!
Hard City is located somewhere on the coast of California. The metropolis used to be a peaceful and prosperous place before the doom came...
A center for modern-day technology and business, Hard City was also the headquarters of the mighty Zero Corp, a multisector company dealing with food, medicines, robotics and genetics. And, well, radioactive waste disposal... After a corruption scandal involving the city mayor, local criminals and Zero Corp. was exposed, the new mayor – Annabelle Archer – immediately terminated all agreements with the company. Its value on the stock exchange market collapsed, the owner and lead scientist, Peter Zerovich, went bankrupt overnight. This is when Peter died, and Doctor Zero was born - to get his revenge! By spilling the mysterious Mutagen in the sewers, he turned some of Hard City's innocent citizens into bloodthirsty beasts!
The Hard City Police Department sent their best people to tackle the problem and bring order back to the streets. The squad is led by Captain Miranda Casey, the Commissioner's daughter and a skilled sharpshooter with a love for big guns. She's accompanied by: Jenny Takabura – a young but promising medic, an orphan whose parents died in a mysterious crash and who was raised by a Kung Fu master grandfather; Marcellus Hammer – an ex-wrestler and self-defence instructor with some shadowy past; and finally Donathan Johnson – a veteran officer, maybe a bit too old, maybe a bit too overweight, but definitely one lucky bastard.
Please keep in mind these are estimates, and the more items you purchase, the more shipping will cost. Unlocked Stretch Goals may also affect shipping cost. We will be charging it after the campaign ends to ensure each backer is charged appropriately.
Hexy Studio is a team of passionate gamers who value the feedback from fellow geeks. And Kickstarter is a perfect platform for working together! During this campaign, we will do our best to answer every question and comment you have, and we promise we will take your every suggestion into consideration. You are the creators of Hard City, just as we are!
Without the support of the great Kickstarter community, we wouldn't be able to publish this game. As a "thank you", we will send you the final copies first, before anyone else can grab them through retail. Of course, you will also get extra stuff unlocked as Stretch Goals for free. Every single backer contributes to making Hard City even more awesome!
Hexy Studio: a creative team specializing in making board games, animations, high quality 3D models and artwork. In 2017 we made our first step as a game publisher, successfully crowdfunding the game Star Scrappers: Cave-in, releasing it in early 2018. Hard City is next in a long line of great games we are working on!
So far, we have cooperated with numerous game publishers, and the effects of our work can be seen in such games as: SUPERHOT The Card Game, UBOOT The Board Game, or Hannibal & Hamilcar: Rome vs Carthagne. You may also see our animations in promo videos for Lords of Hellas, Nemesis and many others.
Risks and challenges
Typically, Kickstarter projects come with a number of risks, especially related to the estimated timing for manufacturing such complex and detailed pieces as game miniatures.
Most of the artwork and miniature sculpts are already done, and the game mechanisms are undergoing final minor adjustments, so we are ready to begin production shortly after the project is over.
We have produced miniatures for other Kickstarter projects, as well as kickstarted and delivered our first game, so we know the ropes - and how to use them to swing over pits.
Hard City is our biggest project yet, but with a dedicated team of experienced specialists, we have the collective knowledge to make solid plans and work on possible contingencies on the fly.
That being said, we know that sometimes a game as complex in production as Hard City can suffer from delays - and as much as we are ready to work to minimize them - if they happen, we will make sure to keep you - our Backers - posted all the way!
The same applies to potential delays in shipping the final copies. Sometimes they just happen, for various reasons, be it the delivery company's fault or force majeure. In any case, we will do our best to speed things up if possible and - of course - will keep you informed about the progress.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
