Hard City Board Game (Canceled)
A game of adventure and tactics in an 80s-inspired new retro setting. Brave Police Officers versus evil Doctor Zero and his mutants.
Hard City is located somewhere on the coast of California. The metropolis used to be a peaceful and prosperous place before the doom came...
A center for modern-day technology and business, Hard City was also the headquarters of the mighty Zero Corp., a multisector company dealing with food, medicines, robotics and genetics. And, well, radioactive waste disposal... After a corruption scandal involving the city mayor, local criminals and Zero Corp. was exposed, the new mayor – Laura Archer – immediately terminated all agreements with the company. Its value on the stock exchange market collapsed, the owner and lead scientist, Peter Zerovich, went bankrupt overnight. This is when Peter died, and Doctor Zero was born. The evil mastermind's aim is to get revenge on the whole world, and he starts with his own city first. By spilling the mysterious Mutagen in the sewers, he turned some of Hard City's innocent citizens into bloodthirsty beasts!
The Hard City Police Department sent their best people to tackle the problem and bring order back to the streets. The squad is led by Captain Miranda Casey, the Commissioner's daughter and a skilled sharpshooter with a love for big guns. She's accompanied by: Jenny Takabura – a young but promising medic, an orphan whose parents died in a mysterious crash and who was raised by a Kung Fu master grandfather; Marcellus Hammer – an ex-wrestler and self-defence instructor with some shadowy past; and finally Donathan Johnson – a veteran officer, maybe a bit too old, maybe a bit too overweight, but definitely one lucky bastard.
Hard City is an asymmetrical miniature board game of tactical conflict on the mean streets of a mutant-infested town.
As Police Officers players spend Action Points (yes, AP markers are shaped as donuts!) to move, shoot, tackle hideous mutants in close combat, and to evacuate hapless civilians.
Each turn only one Officer is activated. Then the devious Doctor Zero gets to act, playing cards to command his mutated horde. Cards from his Chaos deck can always be used in one of two ways: either to apply their text or to use their Basic Actions printed on the bottom of the card.
This allows the not so good Doctor to spawn and move his mutated minions, attack civilians, and Officers, and to perform special actions like Garbage Throw, Sinister Laughter or Evil Masterplan. Too far out to appear on the board himself, Doctor Zero has a card or a mutant for any job!
The streets of Hard City are dangerous, but the HCPD Officers are a bunch of tough guys and gals. In fact, they are way too tough to die!
If an Officer's Hit Points are reduced to 0, he or she is just knocked down until the next round, but also gets an It's Not Over Yet! card, which means things will be more difficult for this character in the future.
Each knockdown also brings Doctor Zero one step closer to victory, but our heroes have some tricks of their own up their sleeves! Each time a total of 10 Mutants are eliminated, the Officers not only score on the Victory Track but also level up and gain an awesome Skill Card.
Oh, did we mention that the game is divided into episodes, which all have a different setup, special rules and winning conditions? They collectively tell the full story of radical action and adventure in Hard City!
Filled with Easter eggs and cinematic references, Hard City will keep you on the edge of your seat until the last episode! And even if our heroes beat Doctor Zero, he may still return for a sequel!
Speaking of cinematic awesomeness, you will find it not only in the art and style of the game but also deep within the mechanisms of Hard City! To make your experience even more cinematic, we created a unique Cutscenes mechanism that the Officers may use while fighting mutants!
Each Hard City episode comes with a selection of cutscenes, visualized on a separate track and representing crucial moments in the plot. The events in each cutscene are triggered once per game after the Officers have met the scene's requirements.
You may choose any scene that is further on the track than the current one, but remember to choose wisely. Once you go ahead, you can't go back!

Risks and challenges
Typically, Kickstarter projects come with a number of risks, especially related to the estimated timing for manufacturing such complex and detailed pieces as game miniatures.
Most of the artwork and miniature sculpts are already done, and the game mechanisms are undergoing final minor adjustments, so we are ready to begin production shortly after the project is over.
We have produced miniatures for other Kickstarter projects, as well as kickstarted and delivered our first game, so we know the ropes - and how to use them to swing over pits.
Hard City is our biggest project yet, but with a dedicated team of experienced specialists, we have the collective knowledge to make solid plans and work on possible contingencies on the fly.
That being said, we know that sometimes a game as complex in production as Hard City can suffer from delays - and as much as we are ready to work to minimize them - if they happen, we will make sure to keep you - our Backers - posted all the way!
The same applies to potential delays in shipping the final copies. Sometimes they just happen, for various reasons, be it the delivery company's fault or force majeure. In any case, we will do our best to speed things up if possible and - of course - will keep you informed about the progress.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
