About

The Short Version

There are a large number of WordPress developers in the world that feel excluded from the Western WordPress community for a variety of reasons, including culture, language, location, time zone, and personal challenges.

We’re finding people around the world who have overcome these challenges and asking them to present some ideas to those people via web video. The videos will be recorded, transcribed, and translated into as many languages as we can afford.

Assuming our first round of presentations is successful and well received, we’ll make more, expanding our topics, but always reaching out to those on the periphery of the community.

While we do intend to create a platform that will support our endeavors, we will always tie our activities back into the existing WordPress community. Our goal is to enrich the WordPress community and expand it’s accessibility, not to supplant or compete with the existing community.

We believe it is from the existing WordPress community that we all get our strength and we believe this community can serve the needs of people currently on the periphery. Our speakers will help us do that, regardless of their gender, race, color, creed, or nationality.

We are passionate about this idea. We know we can make it work! We don’t know if the WordPress community is ready to break down these barriers so we can share our community with people who come from different cultures and who speak in different languages. If you are ready to open up the WordPress community to those on the periphery, please make a contribution and show your support for HeroPress.

The Long Version

When approached by Dave Rosen, founder of XWP, with the challenge to come up with something great for WordPress, Topher DeRosia was drawn to his love for teaching and mentoring others as his pathway to meet this challenge. Topher realised that the average WordPress developer may not speak English, may never have attended a WordCamp, and may not even know who Matt Mullenweg is.

Inspired by the needs and struggles of real-life “average” WordPress developers, our first video series called Develop the Periphery will give WordPress Heroes the opportunity to share information, insights, and inspiration with the WordPress community, whether they’re within the core or at the edges. By learning more about the challenges and struggles of our fellow developers and by offering them the wisdom that has made a difference in our lives, HeroPress will help make the WordPress community stronger and more successful, ultimately transforming the lives of average developers around the world by equipping them with the understanding and tools they need to become super.

How it Works

Our process is simple. We approach WordPress Heroes around the world and invite them to share their wisdom with our viewers. We provide each speaker with information about the audience and the challenges they’re facing. We then ask the speaker to respond with information, insight, and inspiration. That’s it.

We don’t tell them what to say because we want to give each speaker the freedom to share, from their own experiences and passions, what they believe will help their fellow developers become extraordinary.

But it doesn’t stop there, either. We take their presentations and ensure the recording meets professional standards. We edit the video files to make sure each speaker shines, so that nothing detracts from their messages. Then, we transcribe and translate each episode into as many languages as possible to ensure that we can reach as many developers as possible all around the world.

The Presentations

With the help of Kickstarter and all of you, we hope to raise $60K AUD (about $49K US). This will provide us with the funding and support we need to produce the first 6 presentations of Develop the Periphery. Every additional $10K we raise will result in the production of a new episode.

Why HeroPress Matters

WordPress has grown up so much in the last decade, the original mission—Democratize Publishing—is unknown by many users today. During his State of the Word address at WordCamp San Francisco, Matt Mullenweg, cofounder of WordPress, said, “We want our software, the things that we build, to be accessible to everyone.” In his words, “That means everyone, in every language.” That’s the vision of WordPress.

WordPress developers thrive when they can access their peers within the WordPress community. As language is a barrier that keeps non-English speaking developers from having the amazing experience that’s possible with WordPress themes and plugins, language, culture, and non-development abilities are barriers that keep promising developers on the periphery of the WordPress community.

There are a staggering number of WordPress developers all around the world—so many that non-English downloads surpassed English downloads in 2014—and the WordPress team is focused on making WordPress more accessible to these developers. So now is the perfect time to blow apart the barriers that keep promising developers all around the world from engaging successfully as members of the WordPress community. This is the year to make HeroPress happen!

HeroPress is here to find the keys that will unleash this great potential within the WordPress community. Our mission is simple: We will find and empower passionate WordPress developers from all around the world and equip them with the knowledge, insight, and inspiration they need to become WordPress Heroes.

We want to take good WordPress developers and make them super, regardless of their language, culture, and personal situations. We want to break down the barriers that have excluded people with the potential to be great, whether those barriers are found within themselves or within the WordPress community.

We want to reach out to all the developers who are floundering, regardless of their skill level, and give them the “in” they need to be great. They want in, we know that, but many of them don’t know how to break into this wonderful community that provides the support and encouragement and challenge that so many of us crave.

HeroPress has started this transformation by working on a platform that will empower the great speakers of the WordPress community, so they can reach out a helping hand—offering information, insight, and inspiration—to anyone who is locked out of their own potential. What happens from here is up to you!

Presentation Details

Each episode will be approximately 18 minutes long. Each speaker will use the technology available to them wherever they are to create a presentation they want to share to help build up people who want to excel. They will choose the information, insight, and inspiration they want to share based on their own experiences, successes, and failures. Then, they will send their videos to HeroPress.

We will provide the videography editing that will help our speakers shine, adding a leader and credits to each one. We’re not going to edit their content--their messages to WordPress developers around the world--but we will improve the viewing experience so everyone can focus on the message this speakers have worked so hard to learn and to share. Then, we will facilitate the translation and transcription of each episode, so we can maximize the accessibility of all the content HeroPress produces. The audio will remain in English, but the translation will be captioned at the bottom of the screen.

Finally, each episode will be featured on HeroPress and WordPress.tv for later viewing, so all the wisdom HeroPress gathers will be made available to WordPress developers around the world from the convenience of their computers, laptops, tablets, and phones, whenever they want.

Why a Kickstarter?

This campaign serves two purposes. First, we cannot afford to fund this venture alone. We need your help to create the high-quality presentations the WordPress community deserves and to make them accessible in as many languages as possible. Second, we also need your support and encouragement, which we already know is one of the great benefits of participating in the WordPress community.

We know this is a great idea and we’re passionate about making this vision a reality. We don’t know if the WordPress community is ready for this new reality. We don’t know if you are willing and able to break down the barriers that keep others out of this community. We don’t know if you’re ready to teach and learn from people who come from different cultures than yours or those who speak in different languages than you do.

If this excites and interests you we’d love your contribution, and we’d love your vocal support.

Risks and challenges

The world is full of risks, but the greatest and only truly relevant risk to this venture is that this project won’t successfully engage the WordPress developers of the world. We have great speakers and great tech. So, the only way HeroPress will fail is if nobody—including you—actually cares about what we’re trying to do. If nobody wants to learn the wisdom our vibrant community has to offer, then how could we boost anyone up by giving it to them? Given our research, this doesn’t seem likely. But the world is a funny place and stranger things have happened.

Our biggest challenge is telling our target audience about these videos. We are trying to reach WordPress developers all around the world. Some of them operate within the WordPress community, but don’t fully engage. Others may not even realize the WordPress community exists or that it’s there to help people just like them. So, we need to successfully access their specific communities and spread the word. And your help in overcoming that challenge would be very much appreciated!
