Vampires, werewolves, zombies, and other horrors have plagued our world unchecked for far too long. Now you can help put an end to these monsters, and many others, with The Monster Hunter International Employees Handbook and Roleplaying Game!
Based on the best-selling “Monster Hunter International” novels by Larry Correia, the MHIEHRPG is your official guide to Monster Hunter International and the world it fights monsters in. Even better, it’s also a roleplaying game that includes all the rules you need to create characters, play the game, and have amazing adventures in the MHI setting! The MHI Roleplaying Game uses the award-winning HERO System rules. They’ll be included in the MHIEHRPG book itself so you don’t need to buy any other books to play the game.
The MHIEHRPG will be a full-color, hardcover book that will also include:
—full details on MHI: its history; how it’s organized; the types of missions it takes and how it prepares for and executes them
—how the US government’s involved in monster hunting, including the PUFF system of bounties that provides most of MHI’s income
—character sheets for all the major characters featured in the MHI novels, including Owen Z. Pitt, Julie Shackleford, Earl Harbinger, Lord Machado, Susan Shackleford, the Sanctified Church of the Temporary Mortal Condition, Special Agents Myers and Franks, and many more
—details and character sheets on the monsters MHI fights (and that your RPG characters will fight, too)
—how magic works in the world of MHI — and how your character can cast spells
—original MHI fiction by Larry Correia!
Where Your Money Goes
We hope to raise enough money through this Kickstarter to write, design, and print the MHIEHRPG. If you pledge to support this project, here’s what your money’s going toward:
—paying the primary creators involved in the project, including Larry Correia and the RPG’s writer/designer, Steven S. Long
—paying the other creators, including artists and graphic designers
—paying for the actual printing of the book
—paying for shipping and fulfillment
As with any Kickstarter, we don’t take any of your money unless the project is fully funded.
More Information About The Rewards
Our top four reward tiers feature the chance to be included as a character in one of Larry Correia’s upcoming MHI novels. (Whether it’s the next [fifth] novel or a later one depends on how many backers we get at these levels and Larry’s needs for those stories.) The name used will be the name of the person who pledges at that level of support (and it must be your real name, not a screen name or alias). We cannot include multiple names for a single reward pledge, nor can we put in someone else’s name (such as that of your spouse) unless we arrange to get formal permission from that person.
We cannot take suggestions or requests regarding how the character named after you is portrayed or involved in the story. That’s entirely up to Larry Correia. However, he promises not to make you a villain or other objectionable person (unless you specifically request that).
If you’d like to get multiple copies of the printed book at the $60, $80, or $150 reward tiers, please add an additional $50 per copy to your pledge. Please see Update #16 for details. Additional shipping charges may also be required; we’ll contact you about that.
Now that we're approaching our initial funding goal, it's time to roll out some stretch goals! These are just the first of several stretch goals we have planned, but we'll announce the others as we get closer to their targets.
$45,000 -- REACHED! We have now opened the project up for international orders! If you live outside the United States and want to get a physical copy of the MHIEHRPG, now you can. To do this you choose the pledge level you want, then add $30 for shipping to Canada and $50 for shipping anywhere else in the world. (You have to add this in yourself; Kickstarter won’t automatically add it in for you.) If you indicate you want multiple copies we’ll contact you about additional shipping charges.
500 Backers -- REACHED! To celebrate reaching our 500th backer, we are now expanding the availability of patches! Here's what we're gonna do. Anyone at the $60 or higher level can add up to 9 patches at $10 each -- just increase your pledge now and we'll ask in the survey at the end of the Kickstarter how many extra patches (and books at $60) to send you. Backers at the $140 and higher reward tiers still get their first patch free, and can now add up to 9 more at $10 each. In addition, everyone at the $140 and above reward tiers will get a second bonus patch with a different design. (Extras of the bonus patch will not be available.)
Here's what the standard patch, featuring the fearsome luska, looks like:
And here's a peek at the other patch, available only to the backers at the $140 tiers and above:
$50,000 -- REACHED! All backers at the $25 level and above will now receive a PDF of The Devil’s Dozen. It features 13 villains and monsters thought up by Larry and written up by Steve (with illustrations by some of the artists who’ll work on the book). These are all-new characters and monsters, not ones that have previously appeared in an MHI novel. For at least one year this material will be exclusive to Kickstarter backers; you won’t be able to get it any other way.
$60,000 -- REACHED! We will now be manufacturing special MHI RPG dice! The highest reward tiers will get some dice for free as part of their current pledge, and they and other tiers will be able to add dice to a pledge for a small additional pledge. See Update #12 for more information.
$70,102 -- REACHED! All backers at the $25 tier and above will now receive a bonus PDF containing four adventures for the MHI RPG! The adventures will be written by Steve (and possibly some other folks) with some input from Larry. We don’t know what they’ll be yet, of course, but we’re going to try to make them good introductions to the MHI RPG with any maps or other resources you need to run them.
$75,000 -- REACHED EARLY! We've decided to implent our former $75K stretch goal -- reduce the cost of all additional copies of the MHI RPG by $10, to $50 -- right away! Please see Update #16 for details.
If we reach $75,000, we will add a fifth adventure to the adventures PDF! In fact, for each full $5,000 the project brings in beyond that, we’ll add another adventure (so the sixth at $80,000, the seventh at $85,000, and so on). In short, the better we do, the more adventures you get!
Extra Bonus PDF! We've also decided we're going to do another bonus PDF of monsters, villains, and characters -- and you get to help us create it! For an additional $100 to any pledge, you can suggest a character to Larry and Steve and they'll write it up for the PDF, which will be distributed free to all backers at the $25 and higher reward tiers. (Backers at the $500 and higher reward tiers will automatically get to take part for no additional pledge.) Please see Update #17 for details.
International shipping is now available! To place an international order, choose the pledge level you want, then add $30 for shipping to Canada and $50 for shipping anywhere else in the world. (You have to add this in yourself; Kickstarter won’t automatically add it in for you.) If you indicate you want multiple copies we’ll contact you about additional shipping charges.
Thanks for reading our pitch, and we hope you’ll be able to help us make The Monster Hunter International Employees Handbook and Roleplaying Game a reality!

Risks and challenges
Over the past ten years Hero Games has published more than 100 books, including several full-color hardback books that are as long as or longer than we expect the MHI RPG to be. We have also completed two prior Kickstarters and fulfilled our obligations toward their backers without any problems. To the extent that risks and challenges exist regarding the creation of the MHI RPG, we feel they’re most likely to come from outside sources beyond our control. This might include the unexpected death or disability of a key member of our creative team, a disaster at the printing facility, or the loss of printed books during shipping to our warehouse. Fortunately, during our decade in the roleplaying game business we’ve developed significant contacts and resources that we believe would enable us to overcome any such difficulties in relatively short order. For example, we could hire a qualified freelance writer to complete the book, or contact one of the many other printing companies we’ve used in the past.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
What if I'm only getting the PDF, but also want dice and/or a patch -- what will the shipping cost be?
Some backers who’ve only pledged for the $25 “get the PDF” reward have inquired about the shipping cost to add a patch and/or dice to their pledge. Here’s what S&H will cost:
—shipping and handling to send 6 dice within the US costs $10. For each additional 6 dice, please add an additional $5.00.
—shipping and handling to send 6 dice anywhere outside the US costs $20. For each additional 6 dice, please add an additional $5.
—shipping and handling to send 1-4 patches within the US costs $10.00. If you want more patches than that, please contact us for a quote.
—shipping and handling to send 1-4 patches outside the US costs $10.00. If you want more patches than that, please contact us for a quote.
And please don’t forget that if you update your pledge to add something, the new pledge completely replaces the old one, so make sure you’ve properly selected all the rewards you want! We’d hate for anyone to change their pledge and make a mistake.
Will the MHIEHRPG be available through distribution, game stores, and other places after the Kickstarter ends?
After we ship out all the backers' copies of the MHIEHRPG, it will be available while supplies last via the http://herogames.com and http://indiepressrevolution.com online stores, and to distributors who wish to offer it to local game stores. It should be available at the IPR booth at Origins and Gen Con 2013. Retail price in the US will be $60 and it will be part of Bits and Mortar so people who buy it at participating retailers can also get the PDF. We hope our international distributors will order copies but we can't guarantee that, it's up to them.
Small print runs of large hardcover full color books aren't really feasible, so the more money we raise in the Kickstarter the larger our initial print run can be and the longer it can remain in print. Whether we'll reprint it depends on factors we haven't had any prophetic dreams about.
Dice Pricing for anyone at $60 reward tier or above (you have to add these amounts to your existing pledge using the “Manage Your Pledge” blue button): 6 dice for $10 12 for $15 18 for $20 24 for $25 30 for $30 36 for $35 36 with ammo pouch for $50 42 for $40 (or $55 with pouch) 48 for $45 (or $60 with pouch) 54 for $50 (or $65 with pouch) Enough freakin’ dice to fill an ammo can — contact us, you madman! We’ll work something out for you. All backers at the $250 reward tier and above gets six dice free, and can add more by increasing their pledge as noted above (so for $10 they could get a total of 12 dice, $15 for 18, and so on). If you’re in the US and at the $10 or $25 tier, the prices listed above apply. For example, if you’re in the US and want the PDF ($25) but also want 54 dice ($50), you’d pledge $75 (25+50 = 75) and select the $25 pledge level, and in the survey we’ll send out after the Kickstarter ends you’d tell us what you want (what you really, really want). If you’ve already pledged for the $25 PDF, you can change your pledge by clicking the “Manage My Pledge” button in the right hand column, entering the total amount you’re pledging (which replaces your previous pledge). If you’re outside the US and at the $10 or $25 reward tier but want dice too, contact us via message to say how many dice you want and where you’re located, and we’ll let you know how much you need to increase your pledge by to get that, and you’ll say international shipping is shocking, and we’ll agree and think something dark about vampires sucking up all the oil. Please note that amounts pledged to add dice do not also get you a patch! For that matter, an amount you add to get a patch doesn’t get you dice. Each of these additional goodies is separate; if you want both you have to add money for both. After the project ends we’ll send out a survey where you’ll be able to tell us what extras you added money for.
The patches are the type you have to sew on. However, Larry says he uses military velcro tape on his and that works just fine.
