What Is The Champions Villains Trilogy?
As fun and fascinating a place as it is, the Champions Universe wouldn’t be nearly as exciting a setting for superhero roleplaying campaigns without one major element: the villains! Player Characters are important, but without equally as impressive adversaries, antagonists, and foils, there wouldn’t be much reason for them to be heroes.
Champions Villains — a trilogy of Champions supplements — describes the bad guys of the Champions Universe in thorough detail. It doesn’t describe every single villain, of course (three books, even big ones, aren’t enough for that), but within its three volumes you’ll find over 300 villains — the most important, intriguing, dangerous, and defining supercriminals in the setting. This book, Volume Three, covers solo villains: villains who aren’t a part of any specific team, who work as mercenaries for whoever can pay them, or who just prefer to keep to themselves. (Volume One covers master villains, and Volume Two villain teams.)
Although the characters in Champions Villains are tied to the Champions Universe setting (which is detailed in the Champions Universe book), you can adapt them to your game in seconds. Just change the background and perhaps the name, and voila! — you’ve got a new villain for your game. Nothing could be simpler.
What Do I Get?
Depending on what reward level you choose, you get a physical hardcover color copy of Champions Villains Three: Solo Villains, an electronic copy in PDF format, a character pack of its characters that you can customize with Hero Designer software (sold separately), or all three books in the trilogy. All reward levels include a thank you in both PDF and printed versions. At higher reward levels the book will have a limited numbered, signed bookplate by its author, Steven S. Long.
Champions Villains Three is a 336 page, full-color, hardcover masterpiece of a rogue's gallery containing 137 detailed and individually illustrated villains, from Alchemica to Zorran the Artificer. It has an awesome cover by Brian & Brendon Fraim, and contains contributions from over thirty years of Hero's writers and game designers including Steven S. Long, Scott Bennie, Dean Shomshak, and Darren Watts.
Where Does The Money Go?
We'll be using the $14,000 we raise to print Champions Villains Three: Solo Villains and ship it to its backers. (The artists who contributed to this book have already been paid.) Sales of additional copies of the book will be used to pay Fred Hicks, who provided the Champions Villains trilogy with their exceptional layouts.
How does Kickstarter work?
You can pledge any amount and choose a reward at that level or below. To make a pledge, click on the green "Back this Project" button, or on the reward level you want. You can change your pledge anytime up to the end of the kickstarter, replacing your previous pledge entirely. To change your pledge, click on the blue "Manage Your Pledge" button.
No money changes hands until the end of the Kickstarter. When the Kickstarter ends at the set time and date, if the total amounts pledged meet the goal of $14,000 or more, then Amazon Payments charges everyone's credit card, takes a 3-5% cut, Kickstarter takes their 5% cut, and the rest is forwarded to us in about 3 weeks. While we're waiting for the money we'll send out surveys asking for what name you'd like to be thanked as, where to ship your book(s) if you ordered physical books, and so on. When the money arrives we'll order the print run, and as soon as the books arrive we'll ship them out.
If the total pledges don't meet the goal at the end date, then no money changes hands, the book doesn't get printed, and that's the end of it.
Other ways to help: Spread the word! Tell your friends and fellow Champions fans about the Kickstarter. Blog it, tweet it, like us on Facebook, all that sort of thing.
Who Is Jason Walters?
Jason Walters is the general manager of Hero Games. He is also the general manager of Indie Press Revolution, operates DOJ Logistics, and publishes under the Blackwyrm Books imprint. He didn't write Champions Villains - Steven S. Long and a lot of other people did that - but he did author or coauthor such Hero System books as Champions Battlegrounds, Lucha Libre Hero, and Scourges of the Galaxy.
