My father, Roger, and I share a love for woodworking and a particular love for creating pens. We have an online store called HerdrichPens.com and work with hundreds of unique and rare materials. One of our favorite materials to work with is banded malachite and is our featured material for this Kickstater campaign. Each pen is turned the old fashioned way, using a wood lathe and a variety of hand chisels. Every piece is handcrafted by the two of us in our small shop in Chicago, Illinois. We travel to small fairs and shows throughout the Midwest, meeting wonderful people and showcasing our pens.
During this Kickstarter campaign, we are thrilled to be offering these unique products in greater variation and at a much reduced price than on our website. As you can imagine, working with stone can be very difficult and requires extremely precise craftsmanship so as not to shatter or overheat the material as we are creating the pens. In order to overcome these obstacles, we tirelessly sharpen our tools multiple times and use water to cool and lubricate the malachite while we drill and turn each pen to its final dimensions.
We are proud to announce that we have been selected and featured by Backerclub.co this week!
History of Malachite
Malachite is a semi-precious gemstone formed over thousands of years as water seeps through copper formations in the earth. The process that turns copper green when exposed to water is the same process that gives malachite its deep, rich, green color. As the copper reacts to the water, a chemical reaction between the copper ore, oxygen, and hydrogen in water make for the unique green color. The most highly sought after stones have intricate bands of green and black stripes. The greater variation in color and pattern, the more prized they become.

We reached our $15k stretch goal! We are now going to invest in an engraving machine to laser engrave pens. If you would like your pen engraved, you can pledge an additional $20 to have your pen engraved. You will have a font choice of Allura, Ariel, Cooper, Rockwell, or Times New Roman. All of the laser engraving will be filled with black to contrast the malachite and allow the engraving to been seen more easily without distracting from the pen. You can have your pen engraved on the upper or lower barrel, and on the front or the backside of the pen. Here are a few quick diagrams to aid in the understanding. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.
Here are all the font options and the character maximums for each.
Here is our original video, it was much too long but you get to see me fumble over the pens. I hope you enjoy.
Wonder how your pen will be created?
I have made a quick video with narration (not a talent I possess) to explain how the pens are created. The pen I made in this video is made of amboyna burl wood. I just wish I could make a pen this quickly! Thanks for watching, and I hope you enjoy!
