HERbeat

Taiko drumming has thundered throughout ancient Japanese art and culture, traditionally reserved only for men; now resounding as high art on the contemporary world stage, taiko is both ancient and modern, ever-evolving. The HERbeat film project follows the leading women in taiko from the United States and Japan as they prepare to perform together for the first time, each forging her own path, pursuing art that fuels her soul despite seemingly insurmountable cultural, financial, and personal barriers.

Story Summary

The voices and stories of women are MISSING or merely footnoted in much of the taiko history, narratives, and media to date as if they do not exist. In reality, over 2/3 of taiko players in the United States are women.

The HERbeat project follows five of the leading solo taiko artists in the world: Chieko Kojima (Sado Island, JAPAN), and Kaoly Asano (Tokyo, JAPAN),Tiffany Tamaribuchi (CA, USA), Megan Chao Smith (MN, USA), and Jennifer Weir (MN, USA) as they combine forces to create and perform new art on stage. Embedded in each subject or characters’ personal lives in their individual homes, their places of work, and ultimately practicing and performing taiko together, HERbeat explores themes of cultural and racial identity, the challenges faced by professional female artists, and the artist’s passion for a subculture that was designed to keep them on the outside.

As these themes unfold, audiences will follow each of these artists from their home countries and cities to the Twin Cities, joining their worlds together for the first time in February 2020. The weeks leading up to the concert may be some of the most dramatic, as the subjects push themselves physically, creatively, and financially harder than ever before. For some, they will push themselves in ways they have always longed to work. Each artist will have to learn to collaborate with one another, a challenging endeavor for any artist at the top of their game. The artists will live together for 14 days in an historic mansion during the peak of a brisk Minnesota winter, creating an additional source of stress and adventure since most artists hail from Japan or California.

The story culminates with high-intensity performances for packed audiences at the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts in St. Paul, Minnesota - one of the biggest theaters in the region. Questions, such as: What will the subjects learn from one another? What will they learn about themselves? And will this space forged just for them mark the beginning of a new world of taiko for women? will be addressed during the course of this film project.

This film will document an epic gathering of talent, providing a backstage pass to anyone who can't attend the February 29, 2020 concert. Not only will we follow some artists in depth, we will be able to document the entire gathering and performances of this historic concert. Please take a look at the amazing roster of HERbeat artists involved:

 Why are we making this film?

The pounding of taiko drums is not only heard but felt, and mirrors a mother’s heartbeat in the womb - the first sound an infant hears. Oftentimes, infants in audiences are lulled to sleep by the thunderous, rhythmic vibrations of the taiko drum. Despite this visceral connection inherently tied to women, countless masterful, prolific, and influential female taiko artists remain invisible in the top levels of the art form.

“As much as taiko is a new practice that allows for the participation of new groups of people, its development has had a distinctly masculine orientation. All of the progenitors of ensemble taiko on the Japanese mainland were men, and the influence of their view of the ideal taiko player continues to resonate in contemporary taiko aesthetics” (Bender, Shawn. Taiko Boom: Japanese Drumming in Place and Motion, 2012: 144.)

Taiko Boom: Japanese Drumming in Place and Motion, 2012: 144)

The overarching goals of the HERbeat project are threefold: 1.) add and advance women into the narrative of a globally male-dominated taiko community by showcasing their skill, artistry, and commitment via the accessibility of the documentary film medium; 2.) promote taiko as an art form to new audiences, beginning with documentary film goers; and 3.) provide role models of powerful Asian/Asian American female artists who are blazing their own trail.

HERbeat hopes to elevate the public profile of the film and reach the widest possible audience through film festivals and strategic widespread media coverage, focusing initially on global taiko and Asian/Asian-American communities, then expanding its reach to other communities, including international Asian communities, artists, feminists, and LGBTQ+ advocates and allies around the world. A shorter version will be edited to target music education programs in schools and universities. Ultimately, the underlying theme is an appreciation for art and culture in all the myriad forms it takes and the promotion of equitable opportunity for all regardless of gender.

Ideally, our team anticipates the following outcomes for this film:

  1. More people becoming aware of and fall in love with taiko;
  2. Asian & Asian American women will see themselves reflected in the stories presented;
  3. Young  girls will aspire to become taiko artists;
  4. Career opportunities will be generated for female taiko artists via audience demand;
  5. Women will be added to the narrative of taiko history and culture;
  6. Women will be viewed as powerful forces of nature by audience members; and
  7. More female taiko artists will be compelled to share their own stories.

HERbeat provides a window into a relatively unknown (in the U.S.), dynamic, and visceral artform, one in which a familiar, shared struggle of trailblazing, boundless, and artistic women set forth the booming heartbeat and rallying cry to be heard by all in the fight for international gender equality gathering momentum today around the world.

From the Director (Dawn Mikkelson)

"Jennifer Weir (Film Subject, Producer, and Executive Director of Taiko Arts Midwest) and I have been friends for decades, yet it wasn’t until my lens was focused on Jen that I became increasingly aware of our similarities: our struggles as working artists, parents, and queer women; the sacrifices we’ve made for our art and families; the sheer exhaustion resulting from those struggles and sacrifices; and the need to be both hopeful and realistic simultaneously in the face of a form of artistic expression that doesn’t reward or support women, let alone mothers.

In some ways, the creation of this film is an act of hope, an act of defiance. Our crew reflects the film’s subjects. The fact that HERbeat is being made by an all-female and largely Asian-American crew when, “overall, women accounted for 23% of directors, writers, executive producers, producers, editors, and cinematographers working on the top 500 films" (The Celluloid Ceiling Report, 2018 - 33% of documentary directors in this study are women) is significant. Women have traditionally played nicely by the rules dictated by the social networks of men who have controlled our careers for far too long. It is well-past the time to allow women to take center stage in the arts — in taiko and in film.

With this motivator behind the team, HERbeat seeks to put forth into the world an artistic offering that is fresh, bold, and vibrant. In addition to this being the right thing to do, HERbeat benefits from a unique insight — from director to cinematographer, to sound to post-production — of a crew who understand the lives of its subjects. Because, in one way or another, we’ve lived through similar circumstances as women, as Asian-Americans, and/or as queer artists. This IS our beautiful community and we are giving the world unique access."

 Timeline

During the fall of 2018, Dawn Mikkelson (Director) and Keri Pickett (Director of Photography) followed Jen, Megan, and Tiffany over the course of a few weeks in Minneapolis, MN, filming during taiko practice, at Jen and Megan’s home, touring the massive performance venue, and on stage as the three of them laid out the groundwork for their 2020 performance. That footage created a solid foundation for the stories of Jennifer, Megan, and Tiffany, as well as resulting in the sizzle reel to help raise funds and promote the project. The next step is to raise the funds to film with the top women in taiko in Japan, and continue to shoot with our characters in the US beginning Fall 2019.

The film shoot will continue through their performance together in February 2020. We anticipate to edit footage throughout the production process, making the final stages of post-production taking roughly six months to complete, and festival submissions should commence August 2020. Our non-theatrical screening tour will be developed simultaneously, the timing of which dependent upon festival acceptance and/or streaming/broadcast premiere dates with a goal of early 2021.
