About this project
Hemp, Soft Like Cashmere
While most people familiar with hemp immediately imagine a course, rough, textile, SUBSTANCE is the first to introduce a complete line of super-soft, luxurious, elegant hemp. This fine, “cashmere-like” hemp is the basis of our product and is not readily available on the market. By making our products so soft, we entice people to “do the right thing” without sacrificing style. SUBSTANCE produces products with a healing intention and the effects of this intention are palpable when you experience our distinctively soft hemp products.
SUBSTANCE aims to be the global leader in hemp fashion. We are passionate about resurrecting a historically relevant resource that provides a conscious luxury experience while being gentle to our planet.
Hemp is the textile of the future. We know that hemp is and will be by far the most superior textile around for many reasons:
1) Hemp is water efficient. While cotton represents a small portion of the agricultural crops in the U.S., its cultivation requires a significant amount of herbicides and pesticides. Hemp however, requires no herbicides or pesticides and is more drought resistant. Less reliance on cotton and more reliance on hemp could significantly reduce our chemical dependence, which currently affects our water supply. As concerns grow over water, a precious natural resource, hemp offers a natural, safe solution to minimize our dependence on harmful chemicals.
2) Hemp feels amazing. Aside from hemp being the softest natural fiber with the least amount of chemical processing, it also offers the most efficient UV protection, keeps you warm when it’s cool, and cool when it’s warm. Hemp breathes so it is slow to absorb odors, including body odors: a quality rarely found in any other fabric.
3) Hemp lasts longer. Aside from being the strongest natural fiber, hemp retains pigment better than cotton and is even mold resistant.
4) Hemp and our economy. SUBSTANCE realizes the development of a U.S. hemp industry could serve as a vital step towards creating jobs while protecting our environment. As the first clothing line to equate the phrases “Luxury Hemp” with “Conscious Fashion” we are in a position to be first in the garment industry with this concept.
Inspired by Jack Herer’s, The Emperor Wears No Clothes, SUBSTANCE was created to use the voice of fashion to spread Jack’s message. This was a promise Linda Werner made to Jack Herer before he passed away in 2010. Our tagline “Look Within” is philosophical and literal as we place messages in our t-shirts about the uses and history of hemp.

Risks and challenges
Currently, we have enough fabric to create 2700 pieces. We anticipate our product being ready by February 2016 but have proposed April 2016 to make room for unforeseeable circumstances. We'd prefer to make you happy by being early than to disappoint you by being late. If our campaign is wildly successful and requires more fabric, there will be a 9-12 week delay for additional fabric as the yarn is imported from China and knit in the United States. The good news is that we currently have fabric knit and ready to go. The more product we get out there, the more awareness we create!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
