Hemp eyewear sunglasses are made from a hemp composite material consisting of hemp & flax fibres. The frames are formed from the material through a compression moulding process and the result is a strong, lightweight, sustainable pair of sunglasses. All the materials used within the product (including packaging) are sustainable and eco-friendly which is of upmost importance to the brand.
- All sunglasses are made by hand in the UK
- The sunglasses are coated in an eco friendly resin which adds extra waterproof and strength properties.
- We use polarised lenses (colour - brown). They are made from bio material, our lenses are some of the most eco-friendly on the market.
- Spring hinges are used in the frames. They are made from high nickel which gives them excellent resistance to corrosive conditions.
- Our sunglasses are unisex size
- Every pair has a unique aesthetic as the plant fibres form different structures in the material.
- Every pair of hemp eyewear comes with a handmade hemp box and a hemp drawstring bag for the sunglasses. Pledge for 2 or more sunglasses and they will come with a hemp keyring made from the manufacturing waste material (lens blank).
- Hemp eyewear is recyclable & biodegradable (don't worry they wont disappear if you leave them outside overnight)

We would appreciate it if you could order as soon as possible so we can give our manufacturer an idea of quantity - Thank you!
The idea for hemp sunglasses started when I was researching renewable raw materials for my final year (BA Hons Product Design) project and discovered hemp to be one of the most sustainable and useful materials on the planet.
By looking at the applications hemp could be used for, I discovered that there was no hemp sunglasses on the market, so decided to design and manufacture my own.
The initial prototypes were manufactured in the university workshop by hand. This workshop closed down as the course terminated after the final semester, leaving me without a workspace to develop the prototypes further.
I moved back home to the Scottish Borders and continued the development of the idea in my garage/makeshift workshop. This is where I started producing some of the first wearable and finished sunglasses.
The prototypes have been tested with friends throughout the summer (May - August)
In June I started working with fellow student Bradley Smith (BA Hons Graphic Design) who developed the branding of hemp eyewear as well as taking care of the graphic design for the project.
We started working towards an exhibition date which began at the beginning of July in London. Bradley designed the hemp eyewear website, set up the Facebook and twitter page and took product photo's of the sunglasses in time for the design show.
Hemp eyewear featured in New Designers 2014 exhibition at the Business Design Centre in London where the sunglasses were exhibited to a large audience for the first time.
The response for the hemp sunglasses was extremely encouraging and they featured in top 5 favourite products of New Designers 2014 on the cool hunting website: http://www.coolhunting.com/design/londons-new-designers-2014-part-2.php
After the New Designers exhibition, hemp eyewear has received a lot of interest and support from around the world.
We know now there is demand for our product. The next stage is to raise funds and expand from the garage workshop by upscaling our production method.
We have talked extensively with our manufacturing company and are now ready to start large scale production!
We need your backing to achieve our goal of £25,000! This will pay for start up manufacturing and material costs (see cost breakdown below).
If we do not reach our goal then we will not receive any of the money we raise. Pledge what you can and share with your friends to raise awareness for our campaign!
Hemp is a plant which has been used for thousands of years and can be used for everything from fuel for cars, textiles for clothes and paper, natural healthcare products and now sustainable eyewear.
This super-crop can help in solving issues such as depletion of fossil fuels, deforestation and the use of unsustainable materials within products.
Everyone has seen plastic sunglasses and even wooden sunglasses, but we have created truly unique, sustainable, hemp sunglasses.
Hemp is obviously a more sustainable material than plastic and is even more sustainable than wood. Hemp can be grown and harvested every year, where as a tree will generally take 15 to 20 years to grow until they can be used for sustainable manufacture. Deforestation is an important issue and hemp can help reduce this problem.
Hemp eyewear believe that hemp should be used in not just sunglasses but in all areas of industry as it is such a diverse and beneficial plant.
Our vision is to begin by producing hemp sunglasses, then expanding our product range to create hemp based products for consumers, as an alternative/solution to less sustainable materials.
Hemp is the material of the future. Be part of it!
We will use your funding to pay for the tooling cost for the moulds (which is one of our most expensive start up costs), also to pay for the materials and manufacture of the glasses.
We are working closely with our manufacturing company to fulfil the demand we have received for hemp eyewear.

Risks and challenges
While we do not foresee any major problems, there is always a possibility of small delays and setbacks for start ups, however, we have given ourselves a large enough timeframe to account for any potential set backs etc.
This is the first time hemp sunglasses have been manufactured and may bring up some obstacles. To combat this we are working with a very experienced manufacturing company who have been in the Industry for over 30 years! Again with the timeframe we have set for the project this should not be a major problem.
We will notify all backers of our progress with regular updates about the project.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
