Where it began...
Second cousin of the famous writer Ernest, Nicholas Hemingway's Pencils have become sought after all over the world and its with thanks to Kickstarter that he owes this privilege.
Nicholas' beautifully crafted handmade mechanical pencils are all hand produced on his grandfather's old workshop lathe. Nicholas was left the lathe when his grandfather passed away and Nicholas started his bespoke design business in honour of him.
"Every pencil is hand-turned by myself for a truly handcrafted drawing and writing tool" - Nicholas Hemingway
"My grandfather would have been proud to see his lathe being put to really good use by his grandson, and such an apt product for a Hemingway to have produced with his own hands"
Nicholas Hemingway's aim, as many of you already know is to create tools that last. His previous metal range of pencils have their own charm and appeal, but he thought he'd create a piece of drawing technology based on the humble wooden pencil, where all pencils began. Treasure this pencil and it will last a lifetime.
Inspired by my admiration for Architect Lord Norman Foster...
Last year was a big year for me in terms of customer acquisition. Lord Norman Foster became a customer of mine and I am so over the moon to have such a world famous architect using my pencils. I studied architecture at university and so to have one of my heroes using one of my products later in life is a dream come true to me.
"I'm over the moon to have Lord Norman Foster as a customer of mine - simply astonishing"

My Green Promise to Every Customer...
Working with natural materials such as Walnut and reclaimed Ebony has meant that I have had to become very aware of the cost to the environment to provide these natural materials.
I have implemented an offsetting element in my company in the form of tree planting. For every pencil I sell, I will now - week upon week - grow from seed and tend sapling plants which I will - when ready and sturdy enough - plant in areas of green space to revitalise forgotten spaces in and out of the city.
There are lots of companies out there that promise to do this for businesses, and it has always seemed a quick fix for companies to gain green credentials, but this does not appeal to me in the slightest. I would rather know that my efforts are being made the most of and that I can see my efforts are really contributing as they should - without worry.
This way you know that your purchase of a pencil has contributed to a brand new plant or tree being grown to help sustain our future.
Regular Updates of My Tree Planting...
I cannot wait to get started growing and planting, and will ensure that there will be regular updates and photos of my journey to making greener spaces though out the city and beyond.
Risks and challenges
Of course there is a small chance that there may be delays in the process, but I hope to absolutely meet my deadlines and fulfillment agendas once the pledge target is met. Realistically, there are no real obstacles to overcome as I am machining all the units myself and have estimated that I can produce a maximum of 20 pencils per day absolutely all on my own. That's the great thing about a self producing production line, I am not relying on any other companies or manufacturers to meet my demands.
If I get an order for 40 of my precision pencils then I make 40 pencils and distribute them myself with no one else to depend upon. This bespoke made to order service is the way small business used to run before industrialisation. It's a straightforward service much like a tailors. Its a beautifully simple means of production and so I hope not to run into any problems.
