Chatterbox is the world's first educational build-it-yourself, program-it-yourself smart speaker kit for kids that puts privacy first.
Think of it like an Amazon Alexa or Siri, but one focused on privacy that kids can build and program to bring their creativity to life.

Computers of the future will be voice-driven artificial intelligence. How do we prepare kids for a future where a human-like AI is ubiquitous? We do that by giving them the tools and motivations to create and use their very own AI.
By building the hardware and teaching the voice assistant, kids learn how and why this technology works, rather than being tricked by "black-box" technology into thinking voice AI is human.
1. Smart Speaker Kit
The only smart speaker kit easy enough for kids to build. The Chatterbox case is made of recyclable chipboard (really strong cardboard) and powered by the Raspberry Pi computer, the world's most popular educational computer. Its ears and voice are powered by our very own ChatterVoice HAT and microphone. Fold it, build it, customize it!
2. Smart Assistant
Chatterbox is the only educational assistant that kids can teach and program how to listen, talk and respond to commands. It's designed for learning and engineered for fun!

The Chatterbox app is a kid-friendly app that empowers kids to build their own voice-activated skills by connecting LEGO-like blocks.

Our step-by-step instructions make it easy for any child seven or older to build the chipboard case and assemble the electronics, making problem solving fun and hands-on. It's as easy as making a paper airplane!
2. Teachable smart assistant
Think of Chatterbox as a smart assistant that doesn't know it's smart yet. Teaching your assistant new tricks is simple using the easy-to-use Chatterbox Skill Builder. Kids as young as 7 years old can learn to build unique skills to get the weather, ask questions, control lights, listen to music and make their own voice-based games. Anything is possible!

Chatterbox is designed to give kids a practical learning environment where they can explore their unique creativity while developing communication, problem solving and critical thinking skills.
Chatterbox is a maker kit for children to build real, screen-free technology that they can use in their daily lives. Designing voice skills places greater emphasis on communication and creative thinking.

リスクと課題
While there are risks and challenges in every venture, we have gone through great lengths to minimize risk, simplify the manufacturing process and reduce costs for our users.
For our hardware kit, wherever possible, we have opted to use parts that have been tried and tested by the maker community. The brain of Chatterbox is a Raspberry Pi computer made by the Raspberry Pi Foundation. We have chosen reliable off the shelf parts from reputable suppliers. The ChatterHAT PCB is the only custom designed hardware, but has undergone thorough testing with kids in California. The PCB is currently under assessment for production-readiness.
For the Chatterbox enclosure, we have opted to use recycled chipboard as our material of choice to eliminate plastic/polymer waste and to be environmentally-friendly. The chipboard selected thick, strong and durable, while being customizable by kids.
Our software and curriculum is currently being tested in schools in California and is being optimized for ease of use, privacy and security.
With most of the risks and challenges behind us, our focus is on PRODUCTION. We need the help of you and the Kickstarter community to help us meet our minimum order number to reduce costs and pass on the savings to the community.
