Isn't it about time you got a teether that's completely safe for your baby, offers relief from teething pain AND looks awesome?
As a first time mother with a (seemingly rabid) teething baby, I'm constantly scouring the market for teething toys to sooth my poor bairn's gums. I have watched as she trials different textures, shapes and materials; everything in arm's reach either has or will make it's way into her mouth in an effort to gain some relief, with varying results. My apparently chewy nose can't take it anymore.
I dedicated myself to designing and creating a teething toy that is both soothing and safe, something easy for babies to grasp and chew on without being a choking risk. And, although I'm happy when my baby is happy, I'd also like it to be a product that is aesthetically pleasing to my slightly dark and off-beat taste; an epic item for babies that parents can't resist buying. I love seeing a wicked little twist on an already existent useful item to set it apart from the rest.
I thought long and hard about what kind of teether I wanted to design; something brutal but baby-friendly that I had yet to see on the market that met the needs of baba's cutting teeth. I looked everywhere for inspiration until one afternoon, the little one reached for my stuffed Thor doll. Of course! Who doesn't love VIKINGS?
Many Gods, Goddesses, their offspring and weapons were considered, but 3 particular designs ticked the boxes in consideration of little hands, little mouths, sore gums and parents wanting to buy something cool.
The 'Teething for Odin' set of teethers was born.
The fearsome hammer of Thor, the God of Thunder. The perfect shape for little fists to wrap around, and lots of bits to chew on. The internal knot design provides a textured surface that babies can really dig their teeth into.
The best of all of Odin's steeds; the eight legged Sleipnir . The tangle of galloping hooves and it's sleek body create different textures for little hands and mouths to explore.
The Midgard / World serpent, son of Loki and the giantess who grew so big, that he could grasp his own tail while surrounding the Earth. The classic teething-ring with a twist; it eats itself. His raised scales provide relief for little gums.
Each silicone teether has a hollow area to clip a pacifier attacher to. Pacifier attachers are a ribbon designed to clip pacifiers or teethers to you baby's clothes so that it is not dropped or lost, and is available here as a reward if the stretch goal is met.
Helles Teeth 'Teething for Odin' silicone teethers are to be produced in a responsible, fully certified factory approved by SGS/LFGB/FDA and EU.
- are BPA, phthalate, lead, PVC and latex free, food grade silicone
- have been coloured with completely non-toxic colourants
- are dishwasher and microwave safe, easy to sterilize and keep clean
- have no detachable parts for lower choking risk
- are soft, flexible and durable
After sourcing a factory worthy enough of making my wicked viking-themed baby teethers, I worked with a designer (because I'm crap at drawing, as you'll no doubt see from my horrendous sketches) to make a 3D drawing for the factory to magically transform into a mold, to then make teething toys to sooth all of the sore gums of all the bonny babes in Midgard.
After working on cleaning up the first sketches, we have made progress! 3D renderings, a mold and Praise be the All Father...I HAVE SAMPLES!
The first two sets of colours for the teethers have been selected! The colour palette for this range is 'true to form', bold, and comprised of colours that occur in nature. The first set will launch the teethers, with 2 more colour option sets available as stretch goals once the main goal as been reached. If you'd like to see more colours for each design, then please help me reach these goals!
The Shimmering Bifrost set is a special edition set that will only be produced for a single run of 300 pieces, available to Kickstarters first.
PLEASE NOTE - There is an ERROR in the estimated shipping dates of the EARLY BIRD SET. Estimated delivery says July, but it should be August! I cannot change the details of the reward as it has already been chosen as a reward. As this was an oversight on my part, I will try my best to get the early bird rewards sent as soon as I can, but that will realistically be early August. I am sorry for this mistake and it was not my intention to mislead anyone!
As well as gaining financial support for this project, I chose to launch this project on Kickstarter to tap into the diverse range of international creatives lurking on this site. My product is aimed at those who appreciate re-designed objects that are visually stunning as well as serve a purpose, and cater to the needs of their inner geek. The 'Teething for Odin' range is but the first of many teether sets! I have many more design ideas for future Helles Teeth silicone teethers through a range of alternative themes, and hope that I can achieve a fan-base who, along with their babies, will love my teethers as much as my little monkey and I do!
I am in the process of materializing the first teether in the Teething for Odin range, Thor's Hammer, so that backers can see at least one of the finished products from the early stages of this project. Alone, I am unable to fulfill the high minimum order quantity and fund the production of all of the molds, so I am looking to you to help me bring my dream to fruition. Backers' money will directly pay for the production of the molds, production of the units, shipping, packaging of the product, taxes and Kickstarter fees.
Breakdown of costs (in the currency charged):
- 3D rendering and Mold production (x3 molds) - US$2040
- Production of first order (6 colours) - US$2400
- Tax NZ$600+
- Packaging and shipping - US$375 + average NZ$6 per package
- kickstarter and amazon fees - 10%
Not including extra rewards and colour options (US$900 each colour set), that equates to well over $5000.
As the project progresses, sketches, 3D drawings and prototypes will be produced and documented so that you, the backer, can see exactly where the project is at. When the full amount is pledged, the two remaining products can finally be funded and completed, and be sent as rewards to all of those who have helped me bring relief to little ones' gums, and hopefully made a few parent's and babies lives a smidgen more kick-ass.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you so much to all who support this project. You are aiding me in materialising a few of the ideas I have knocking around in my skull, and transforming them into a tangible, safe, effective and awesome item to be proud of. May the Gods smile upon you!
Risks and challenges
The risks in this project are mainly financial and demand. If the project doesn't generate enough interest and fails to be funded, I will be unable to produce the second and third mold. Noooo!
All aspects of design and production have been considered and will be constantly revisited and if necessary, improved. I have worked hard to find a factory that produces safe products responsibly, and we will work together to create the safest product possible.
I have spoken to the factory engineers and sales manager, and have based my project timeline on the information given as to production and shipping times. I will do everything in my power to manage each stage of the project effectively so that all processes run smoothly, and backers receive their rewards on time.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
