Children are vanishing. The police have no leads. A small town holds its breath in anticipation of the next disappearance. The children know what hunts them. An entity dismissed by adults, but that feeds on the fear and trauma of those around it. The Spindly Man has come, a modern legend given life, the terrified children as its prey.
Mandy hunts Monsters. Her name is whispered on the playground, a legend among the children of the world. Whatever creature troubles you, when the adults won't listen, it is Mandy that can help you out. All you need to do is draw a picture of the beast, and it will reach her.
She's the thing that the things in the dark are afraid of... until now.
Because the Spindly Man is a force unheard of, terrifying away the monsters that merely aim to give children a fright... and stealing the souls of its victims. Inspired by both the internet tale of “Slender Man” and the hit art-house horror “The Babadook”, “The Spindly Man” draws on these, and our own original mythology to create a deliciously dark modern monster.
“The Legend of the Spindly Man” is a brand new horror-fantasy comic, terrifying for readers of all ages. A stand alone story, those new to the character of “Mandy” will find this the perfect introduction to her world of monsters under the bed and creatures lurking in the shadows. Older readers will appreciate the dark undertones, and themes reminiscent of the works of Neil Gaiman or Terry Pratchett, whilst younger readers will see a world of terrifying monsters and an awesome female protagonist. "Mandy the Monster Hunter" will face her toughest challenge yet in "The Legend of the Spindly Man", a four-part mini-series launching 2018.
Inspired by viral storytelling, Mandy must uncover the dark origins of the Spindly Man, and save the missing children... if she can! As with all "Mandy" stories, it is written with all-ages in mind, but as this is her scariest tale yet we'd personally recommend ages 12+ (PG-13 for those in the US)... but every child is individual, as Mandy well knows. This debut issue will be 28-pages, full colour and all physical copies will come bagged and boarded.

He Is Coming.
Hellbound Media is an independent British-based comic company founded and run by Mark Adams and Matt Warner. Matt works as a journalist and newspaper editor, whilst Mark is a Doctor of Philosophy and has written and lectured in cult media and horror. With this background in writing, and a lifetime interest in fantasy, comics and horror, the two of them came together to form Hellbound Media. An outlet to write original horror and fantasy fiction, they've come to work with a team of amazing artists and other guest writers over the years. The company launched officially at Bristol Comic Expo in May 2011, and has gone from strength to strength. As it approaches its 7th Anniversary we're ready to launch our latest and most ambitious comic miniseries. We have had huge success with all our previous Kickstarter projects, and we work tirelessly to deliver all our rewards, and hope for this one to be our best yet!
What follows is a selection of reviews and comments on Hellbound Media's work:
“There's a sprinkling of urban legend, a taste of dark faerie tale and a big helping of kick-ass young female hero” - John A. Short, Kult Creations (review of “Mandy the Monster Hunter: The Face in the Curtain”)
"Hellbound media are producing some terrific titles... putting the fun and scares back into horror comics" - Paul Kane (author of “Sherlock Holmes and the Servants of Hell”)
“Great comic; sick and twisted. I love it!” - Spencer Wilding (actor, Darth Vader in “Rogue One”, & “Doctor Who”, for “Slaughterhouse Farm”)
“...each contains an unmistakable feeling of dread. You know from the first page that something dark and sinister is going to happen. It's just a matter of when and how” - James Ferguson , HorrorTalk (review of “Shock Value: Giallo”)
"awesome and beautiful... there's a lot to enjoy in here" - Pippa Bailey, The Ghoul Guides (review of “Shock Value: Green”)
Whilst we're hoping the stunning first issue of “The Legend of the Spindly Man” is reward enough, it wouldn't be kickstarter without an array of awesome extras on offer. We have a whole host of original artworks, T-shirts, postcards, and limited edition signed and sketched comics. All comics will be sent out bagged, boarded and safely packaged up. Some rewards are unique, limited in numbers, including the opportunity to have original inked line-art of the actual comic, from rising star artist Lyndon White.
The first issue of Spindly Man comes with THREE original art prints of “Mandy the Monster Hunter” or “The Spindly Man” himself, created by some of the best talent in UK indie comics. Arfon Jones (Slaughterhouse Farm) offers art with Mandy facing a Jurassic-sized problem. Atlantisvampire (The Face in the Curtain, Reverend Cross) shows her own take on the Spindly Man. Janine Von Moosel (City of Lost Souls) paints Mandy in a difficult situation. All three prints are available, in comic size format, with this Kickstarter!
The unique “Mandy the Monster Hunter” T-Shirt, produced by Genki Gear, is available again, in some of our higher level rewards. Usually retailing at £15, you can grab this T-Shirt, available in numerous sizes from Small to XXL, at a low rate with other rewards. Also, want it added to a different reward level? Just boost your Pledge by £10 and list it as a “Add-On” in your Survey when the campaign ends!
We have TWENTY copies of the comic which will be signed and include a small unique sketch by Lyndon White, which will also be numbered. These are very limited, but offer a special extra reward for our backers. The biggest reward on offer, however, is the chance to own the original artwork for the comic, presented Inked and signed by Lyndon. Backers will be able to choose their requested page based on the order in which they back, first come, gets first choice. A selection of your choices can be found below, with the full list available later in the campaign.
Any suggestions? Other rewards you'd like? Other Hellbound comics? JUST ASK! Let us know what we can do and we'll do our best to make it happen! We hope you like our Rewards on offer, and will consider supporting the project!
And if that isn't enough we've teamed up with Swampline Comics to offer you one final bonus!
Matt Warner - Writer
Matt's love of comics started in the 80s, about the same time as his love of horror. Combining both in Hellbound Media, he has created Mandy the Monster Hunter, Dublin's infamous vampire killer Dawn Keenan and Wales' very own slasher icon who lumbers through the pages of tongue-in-cheek video nasty homage Slaughterhouse Farm. He's also working on a children's book about helpful dinosaurs.
Dr Mark Adams - Writer
Mark has been writing comics for years, starting off drawing his own as a child with the best stick-man art around. Working primarily as an academic in cult media and film, he has lectured on subjects such as horror films, internet fandom, and “Doctor Who”. Hellbound Media has allowed him to indulge his creative side and create new stories in the genres he loves.
Lyndon White – Artist
Lyndon is a UK freelance illustrator, writer and comic artist. Working with publishers such as Blue Fox Comics, Hellbound Media, Disconnected Press, ComicHaus, Capstone Press, Lyndon is a rising star in the comics industry. Lyndon takes the essence of the narrative and ensures that he adds his unique flare of undertones including horror and surrealism.
Nikki Foxrobot – Letterer
Nikki Foxrobot has been a comic letterer since 2009 and she has worked on titles for Games Workshop and Sky TV, along with many others. She lives in Southampton, UK and is both talented and competitively-priced.
Risks and challenges
Beyond some form of unavoidable disaster (e.g.unexpected tornado containing hostile aquatic life), there really should not be any. The art is completed and in the process of being lettered, we have a printer, and it is all priced up. Once we have the funds we can be ready to print once everything is polished, and get the rewards into full production. At most, we may hit unavoidable delays but we have set a hard dead line for ourselves this time, and we will hit it!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
