Every child knows that a monster lives under the bed. Or perhaps they lurk in the wardrobe, or down below in the basement, or up above in the attic? The home isn't the only place monsters can be found either. Under the old bridge, in the derelict and abandoned house, or perhaps lurking in the undergrowth at the bottom of the garden – monsters are everywhere, every child knows that.
Mandy hunts Monsters. Her name is whispered on the playground, a legend amongst the children of the world. Whatever creature troubles you, when the adults won't listen, it is Mandy that can help you out. All you need to do is draw a picture of the beast, and it will reach her.
Straddling the line between childhood imagination, and threatening entities in the dark, Mandy the Monster Hunter encounters all manner of creatures, great and small. Have no doubt, she's the thing that the things in the dark are afraid of...
Hellbound Media is an independent British-based comic company founded and run by Mark Adams and Matt Warner. Matt works as a journalist and newspaper editor, whilst Mark has written academically and lectures in cult media, and it with this background in writing, and a lifetime interest in fantasy, comics and horror, that the two of them came to form Hellbound Media. An outlet for us to write original horror and fantasy fiction, we've come to work with a team of amazing artists and other guest writers over the years. The company launched officially at Bristol Comic Expo in May 2011, and has gone from strength to strength.
One of our initial books was the first volume of horror anthology 'Shock Value' which featured the story 'Monster Under the Bed', at the time a stand alone tale, but now the very beginnings of the Mandy the Monster Hunter saga. A colour version of the story can be found below!
The character returned in the next 'Shock Value' edition, in a short story entitled 'Mandy and the White Rabbit', and she made her full comic début in the stand alone 'Mandy and the Monster', one of Hellbound Media's most popular titles. The comic explored the character in more depth than previously, starting to unpick the background of Mandy as she investigates a creature lurking in the basement of her childhood school. However, there is still much to explore, and more secrets to uncover as the saga of Mandy the Monster Hunter continues...
Hellbound Media has been entirely self-funded since its inception, and as we expand our titles dip our toe into coloured artwork, we find the initial costs getting higher. We're here to ask you to help us bring our most ambitious book yet to life. “Mandy: Book of Monsters” will feature a combination of atmospheric, shaded black and white art, and full-colour storylines, alongside some original pin-ups and exclusive material.
This 66-page volume will do exactly what it says on the tin. An anthology of tales in which Mandy faces a variety of monsters, brought to life by a team of the most talented independent artists working today. It's a truly international team, with artists from America, Sweden, France and, of course, from all across the United Kingdom. Each story will offer a unique look into Mandy's world, featuring terrifying and imaginative monster designs.
Mandy's original artist Anna Susanne provides the art for 'The House that Bled'. Neil McClements (Shock Value: The Undoing) lends his dark, textured style to 'Another Child's Monster' whilst Jesse Thomas (Dawn After Dark: Kiss Me Deadly) provides the art for 'Troll Bridge Ahead'. Other artists include Atlantisvampir, Gordon Napier and Oda Sonju, as well as other's we'll announce during the campaign.
Mandy also offers a different kind of hero, a female urban legend who wears armour produced from the monsters she has defeated. The stories at time may be dark, at times funny, but always with an eye towards younger readers. Kids love monsters, and Mandy is designed to appeal to adults and younger comic readers alike.
The stories are done, with lettering and colouring nearing conclusion, this kickstarter is simply to allow us to bring the book to print. With your help we can take the next step forward in producing full colour comics in the future, and with bringing more tales of Mandy to readers sooner. We hope you'll support us, and take a step into Mandy's world!
Hellbound Media have been busy the last four years, working with a range of artists and meeting many other independent comic producers on the UK convention circuit. We're bringing some of the best talents around to our rewards, offering full colour art prints, badges, and an exclusive 'chibi-Mandy' T-shirt design, which has been produced in association with the fabulous team at Genki Gear. There's even a chance to have your own son, daughter, niece, nephew or whoever you choose, to star in their very own exclusive Mandy comic strip. We're also ready to listen to new rewards ideas and suggestions, so let us know!

REVIEWS AND FEEDBACK FOR MANDY:
“Overall this comic delivers everything you want from a horror book, eerie settings, likeable and believable characters and awesomely scary monsters galore - if that sounds like something you’d love, you won’t regret the time you put into this one!”
- Girls Like Comics
“First appearing in Hellbound's Shock Value, an early anthology, the titular Mandy is a cynical but emotionally fragile adult able to see the bizarre Lovecraftian horrors that plague the lives of lonely children.”
- SFX Magazine
“Buffy the Vampire Slayer...meets John Constantine.”
- Small Press Big Mouth
“The set-up behind the story is very clever...a hero who is called in by children to fight the monsters that only they believe in like a monster-hunting Father Christmas.”
- John A. Short, Kult Creations
