Dr. Yang's Crampless Tea - herbal tea to soothe period cramps 100% naturally
My name is Helen, and I am passionate about empowering women like you to take care of your body during your period.
The story starts with my mom.
Almost 20 years ago, my mom and I immigrated to the United States. My mom, Dr. Yang, was the head of the department of Radiology in one of THE top hospitals in China. But, as a foreigner, she couldn't practice in the US without going through exams and residency all over again -- meaning, she gave up her career and dreams so that I could have a better education. I recently graduated from Harvard about 3 years ago, so I would venture to say I didn't let her down :)
So instead, my mom devoted her time to the wellness of our family. Although originally a practitioner in Western practice, she also believed in the tried and true traditional Chinese methods. Growing up, I always had horrible period cramps, but she always came to the rescue with her delicious tea.
Although I would love to say her recipe was top secret, the tea is actually rooted in traditional Chinese practice and is considered a household recipe for to soothe period discomforts in China and greater Eastern Asia.
There have been many variations to the recipe, but my mom's golden ratio of four simple ingredients: zesty ginger, unrefined black sugar, nutritious goji berries and wholesome jujubes, is what I swear by.
Why these four ingredients?
Ginger’s powerful anti-inflammatory effects have been shown in research studies to reduce menstrual pain as effectively as the drugs mefenamic acid and ibuprofen. Its antioxidant properties is an added bonus in preventing heart disease and aging.
Black sugar is completely free of chemicals, unlike white sugar. It contains molasses composed of essential minerals such as iron, calcium, and potassium, which relaxes the uterine muscles and eases contractions that occur during menstruation.
Goji berries are loaded with magnesium, which is an effective treatment for muscle pain. It's also packed with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that help boost the immune system and protect the body against harmful bacteria and viruses.
A rich source of iron and phosphorous, jujubes help regulate blood circulation and increase blood flow. It’s also been proven to have calming effects on the brain and nervous system, helping to relieve the anxiety that goes hand in hand with PMS.
How well does it work?
Women in China almost never take painkillers for period cramps. Instead, they rely on what they've been drinking for centuries - tea - for cramp relief. And thanks to the huge population of Chinese women and history that stretches back thousands of years, this tea has gone through one of the largest user studies in the world.
And recently, in the Western world, there have been more clinical studies popping up that show the efficacy of herbal remedies in treating menstrual cramps.
- In a 2009 study, women who took ginger capsules before the start of their menstrual period experienced a level of pain relief equal to that of study members who treated their menstrual cramps with ibuprofen.
- A 2012 study analyzed the use of ginger root powder or a placebo in 120 women and found that there were significant differences in the severity of pain between the ginger and placebo groups. Those taking ginger root powder two days before the onset of their menstrual period and continuing through the first three days of their menstrual period had the shortest duration of pain.
- In a 2008 report, scientists sized up 39 studies and concluded that Chinese herbs may alleviate menstrual pain more effectively than over-the-counter pain medications. Most study participants were given formulas containing five or six herbs.
- Several studies have found that supplementing with magnesium, found in abundance in goji berries, can reduce menstrual cramps and aching.
Dr. Yang's Crampless Tea
In hopes of sharing this natural way of healing with more women in the world, I’ve packaged the tea -- just like how mom used to make it -- into easily accessible packets perfectly portioned for each month. There are 10 tea bags in each box, to enjoy a few days before your period and during your period. Traditionally, Chinese Medicine required lengthy brewing, but with our packaged dried herbs -- all you have to do is pour it into a cup, top it off with hot water, stir and enjoy.
This delicious tea works absolute wonders if you drink 1 cup a day, 5-7 days before your period starts and at the first sign of cramps. For many women, this helps prevent cramps from ever occurring in the first place, and drastically reduces the intensity of pain felt during their periods.
I know you'll love sipping on this hot cup of liquid self-care during your period just as much as I do, and hope that through our tea, you can also experience the warmth of a mother’s touch.
Thank you <3
