About

‘We seek him here, we seek him there….”

You may think you know the Scarlet Pimpernel - you think he's a camp, arch fop saving rich people during the French Revolution. I mean, everyone's seen Blackadder, right?

Think again.

The Scarlet Pimpernel is the original superhero - the inspiration for the dual-identity Batman/Spiderman type characters. It was originally produced for the stage in 1903 before the novels were published. The critics hated it. It ran for years.

He is someone who has seen an unacceptable situation - mass murder - and decides to do something about it. In many ways I think he's like Roger, Big X, from The Great Escape - 'Did the Gestapo give you a rough time?' 'Not nearly as rough a time as I now intend to give them.'

But what I love about Percy Blakeney is his mischievous, irreverent, devil-may-care playfulness. He uses ridicule and mockery against his enemies - a very effective weapon - tyrants hate being laughed at.

"You are still wearing the worst-cut pair of breeches it has ever been my misfortune to behold. Lord save us, Shuffle-on - have you guillotined all the decent tailors in Paris?"

My new adaptation has already had a successful rehearsed reading in Glasgow with a professional cast, directed by Jennifer Dick, Associate Director of Bard in the Botanics.

Now we are raising funds for a week-long showcase in Edinburgh with the aim of attracting investment so we can take the play on tour and ultimately to the West End.

This is an exciting swashbuckling production that will appeal to a young audience who love superheroes and an older audience familiar with earlier adaptations.  With a cast of 10 playing 21 characters, it's an expensive show!

We have already raised some funds towards our costs but we need £80,090 to complete the capitalisation.

Breakdown

Cast and creative                  £46,306

Costume/set/props               £10,000

Theatre/rehearsal /misc        £11,109

Contingency @ 10%               £6,742

Crowdfunding fees                 £5,933

Total                                      £80,090

Please note everyone is working for ITC minimum. We have sourced a costume hire company to keep costs down.

You will note I haven't included any box office income. Obviously we hope to get great houses for this show - who doesn't love a swashbuckling adventure story? But any money we make on the show will be put towards the costs of taking it on tour.

Industry feedback on The Scarlet Pimpernel:

"Your adaptation has a good loyalty to the original stories with a good dramatic drive through from start to finish. Fans of the book will identify with the characters instantly and enjoy the ride of their adventures. "Georgia Gatti, producer of the stage version of Wolf Hall.

"We were very impressed by this fast moving, rip-roaring adventure of a play. It’s well constructed, with a good pace and skilful management of plot and subplot. The goodies outwit the baddies and honour and justice prevail." Tessa Walker, Artistic Director Birmingham Rep.

Risks and challenges

We have set up a limited company, Pimpernel Productions Ltd, to manage the production of the show. We have already commissioned a logo, website and costume designs. We have a very experienced director and designer on board.

The script has already had a successful rehearsed reading with a professional cast. Further auditions will be held once the performance dates are finalised.

We are aiming for a one week run in Edinburgh in Spring 2019. Once we have funding in place the production will be green-lit.

We have found a great venue for the showcase in Edinburgh and already have interest from the Gaiety Theatre in Ayr and the Tivoli in Aberdeen for a subsequent tour.

Thank you for reading this far!
