My goal is to publish a 10x10" hardcover book of drawings I've created from vintage library borrower cards that date back as far as 1930. These cards are pieces of paper ephemera, created to perform one simple function. My drawings give each unique card a new life as a permanent guest for a collector's wall.
A Permanent Record will bring these cards together, back home in a book, showcasing the cards with their drawings, complemented by quotations related to the books in which the cards once lived.
Each card was selected from stacks of thousands of forgotten books which were cast aside. The card titles may call to mind times when we lived inside their worlds for a little while, rooted for their characters, or wished that we could be with them-- or be them. The original typewritten information introduces each book with names carefully signed in cursive. Each pen and ink drawing refers to its book in ways best left to the imagination.
A merging of art and literature, nostalgia and history, recycling and reusing. Each one is unique, with the drawing relating to symbolism from the book, or a play on words with the title. This project's intention is to open conversation between generations for discussions of the past, and hopefully create interests by introducing old titles to new readers.
Riesgos y desafíos
My biggest challenge in creating this project is the locating of the library cards. The federal government has funded libraries to go digital, making these cards nearly extinct. Emailing, letter writing and phone calls have not worked thus far. My best luck in locating cards has been through good old fashion leg work. Unfortunately that takes time and money, but with your help I can hit the road and begin my scavenger hunt!Más información sobre el concepto de responsabilidad en Kickstarter
