(UPDATE: 3/23/16) With just over a week to go, we are excited to announce MATCHING FUNDS and TWO NEW PERKS.
Seeing how close we are to our goal, an anonymous donor has offered to match up to $5000 in donations. With a little help from you all, this can push us OVER OUR GOAL!
As an ADDITIONAL incentive, we have added two new perks: A Heidi Duckler Ultimate Swag-Bag and an autographed copy of our commemorative 30th anniversary book. Check them out in our "rewards" section!
The Company: Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre
Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre, an international leader in site-specific dance, is embarking on a brand new adventure!
This April, we will create and perform Siá Kará at the “Habana Vieja: Ciudad en Movimiento” (“Old Havana: City in Movement”) festival in Havana, Cuba. We’re honored not only to take part in the festival, but to be the first American dance company to premiere a site-specific piece in Cuba.
As a company that brings innovative dance experiences to non-traditional places,Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre has created performances at the intersection of architecture, dance, history, geography, and social justice for over 30 years. The company’s performance and outreach programs reach over 6,000 people annually in and outside of Los Angeles.
The Project: "Siá Kará"
“Siá kará” is an Afro-Cuban phrase, meaning “to wash away the past.” Our Siá Kará, however, does not commemorate an erasure, but a restoration.
The deterioration of U.S. - Cuba relations over 50 years ago created a rift that was difficult to cross. For all intents and purposes, cultural exchange between the two countries stopped entirely. Now that diplomatic relations are being restored, Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre has the chance to be one of the first American arts companies to visit Havana and create exciting new collaborations.
An opportunity so unique calls for something spectacular! Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre will create a brand new piece, exclusively for the Old Havana festival. The challenge is that we only have 48 hours from wheels down in Havana until the performance—48 hours to find the perfect location, listen to what the City of Havana has to say, choreograph, and rehearse Siá Kará in its entirety.
Of course, these are the kind of circumstances in which Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre thrives!
Bringing Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre’s work to Cuba creates a mutually beneficial opportunity for both our company and the festival goers. We get to share our passion for site-specific dance with new audiences, while making connections with artists from around the world. We hope festival goers and participants alike will experience dance in a new way, and transform the way they view the world around them.

Risks and challenges
In dance, there are always challenges associated with performance, and site-specific dance comes with its own unique set. We deal with many of theses risks daily: we rely on our dancers’ bodies and health, we hope for fair weather, and we deal with the logistical challenges that arise with each individual project location.
This project comes with its own unique risks and challenges, not the least of which is creating (within 48 hours) a piece that honestly listens and responds to the City of Havana, while maintaining the strength of voice and vision that has made Heidi Duckler an iconoclast in the field of site-specific dance.
With over 30 years making site-specific work around the world, Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre in uniquely qualified to handle the challenges of producing a new dance piece in a short amount of time, in a brand new site. We’re confident that with our artistic team, dedicated technical and production staff, and the steadfast support from fans we’ll create something phenomenal.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
