Hedwig Dances, "in its twenty-seventh successful year...is not only bright and surprising, it's also a carefully woven presentation of professionalism in every detail, and there are a lot of amazing details."

Hedwig Dances, a contemporary dance ensemble under the artistic leadership of Jan Bartoszek, is developing a new work to premiere at the Athenaeum Theatre, June 21-22, 2013. The piece, entitled ASCENDance, is a dance theater production based on the concept of renewal and transformation. Hedwig Dances’ artistic director and choreographer Jan Bartoszek is working with the creative team of sculptor Barbara Cooper, video projection designer Petra Bachmaier of luftwerk, composer Matthew Ferraro and lighting designer Ken Bowen

The project began by developing the depth, complexity, and movement capability of flat planes of paper using folding processes based on origami, an ancient Japanese ceremonial folding practice, to create large-scale structures. The structural objects created by Barbara Cooper are manipulated by the dancers.

Immersive light projection by Petra Bachmaier changes and expands the spatial orientation of the structural objects and gives mood and character to the performance.

The music created by Matthew Ferraro completes the composition in drawing the disciplines together to create a harmonious dance theater performance.

The structures are a metaphor for the information overload experienced in the 24/7 news cycle world. Just as information is folded into smaller and smaller bits, compressed into increasingly smaller technological devices, the folds of origami contain information about the original unfolded piece of paper that, in its folded state, remain concealed. The dancers use the structures to embody movements of ritual and its antithesis, expressing the dichotomy between personal sanctuary and the kaleidoscopic nature of the contemporary world. The expression is wrapped in light and music.

Risks and challenges

A collaborative project of this size and magnitude requires all of the artists to be recognized and rewarded for their creative work. As the lead developer of this project, Hedwig Dances is responsible to the participating artists to generate funds and awareness for their work while the major promotion goes to the dance company as the performance artists.
