This is a fun and exciting story about a piggyback race taking place at the Zoo. However one by one, each pair of animals meets with certain disaster, putting them out of the race....
The story is designed for children aged 2 to 5 years old and is perfect for reading aloud. It is presented in a humorous way to engage young readers and keep them guessing as to what will happen next...
With 20 different species featured throughout, the book is also a great way to help children learn and identify the many different types of animals in the world.
The book is 32 pages in length and is in full colour. We have been working on this since January this year and are now almost finished! Here are some of the drawings from sketch to finished product.
About the illustrator
The book was written by myself (Matt Harrigan) and illustrated and designed by Melinda Beavers, an award-winning illustrator who lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Melinda creates fun, whimsical illustrations in pencil and more of her amazing illustrations can be viewed at her website.
About the author
Matt Harrigan is a passionate author of children's books and short stories, who has been writing stories since the early age of 6. He is an engineer by profession and is also a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI). The Zoo's Annual Piggyback Race will be the first of his books to be published.
Matt has founded the children's book publishing company, Hedgebury under which his new book will be published.
Kickstarter functions as a fundraising platform to help independent projects get started. Rewards are provided to contributors of the project, and a list of these rewards are shown on the right hand side of the page. I have selected a personal fundraising goal of £3,000. If the funding goal is achieved you will be billed for the amount you have pledged to contribute and I will send you the promised reward as soon as they are made available. However if the fundraising target is not achieved you won't be billed a single cent.
Please have a look at the rewards offered and also have a look at the Kickstarter Help centre for more information on how the site functions.
Also £1 is about $1.50 (US and AUS).
What We Already Have
The illustrations are complete (and they look fantastic) and the book is now ready for printing. However what we are a little short on is funding to help pay for our first print run. The money raised from this fundraising will go directly to the costs of production, mainly for the printing and shipping but also to help pay for the illustrative work as well as the eBook.
If enough money is left over from all of this, then we will also try to add in some interactive buttons to the eBook, so that when children push on the animal on the screen, then that particular animal noise will be heard through the device.
With your help, we can bring this project to life!
P.S. If you have any questions about the project, about kickstarter, about the rewards or what I will do with the funding, please don’t hesitate to contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
I would also be very happy to hear from anyone who has some ides or suggestions to help this project further progress!
Risks and challenges
The risks to the project after funding is achieved include:
The Quality of the Book received from the printers may not be up to standard:
I believe this to be of low risk as I have personally met with the printers who specialise in printing picture books and I have also seen samples of their work. As such I am quite confident in their ability to produce a high quality book.
Delay by the printers:
The printed books should be available to distribute to you after mid January, however a delay in the print run could cause this date to push back into February. I will let you know of any delays well in advance!
Quality of the eBook may not be up to standard:
There is a small amount of risk that the quality of the eBook will not be up to standard. However the eBook designers are professionals and the samples they provided were of a very high quality. Also they just sent me a draft version of the eBook for iPad and it looks fantastic!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
