GLIMMER: Heather Mae Makes A Record For The Light-Seekers
You are still here, and that is everything. Heather Mae is making an album to remind you: YOU ARE NOT ALONE.
This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Tue, January 1 2019 4:59 AM UTC +00:00.
Hi, I'm Heather Mae.
I'm a social-justice songwriter and mental health activist on a mission to make the world a more inclusive place. I'm fat, queer, have Bipolar Disorder 2, and I'm done being ashamed of all of the above.
I also love coffee, glitter, and long hugs. Nice to meet you! Let's be friends. :)
In 2013, I was told I had vocal nodules and might never sing again. I vowed that if I got my voice back, I’d dedicate my career to writing music that’s honest, and that helps others who are marginalized feel seen. I’ve kept that promise. In 2015, I released my first record, I AM ENOUGH, and it reached #58 on the iTunes Pop Charts. For the last three years, I’ve been a full-time touring musician performing across the US, meeting hundreds of folx who’ve told me my music helps them feel understood.
Around the time I found out I had vocal nodules, I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. But I didn’t write about it. I didn’t talk about it. I was too afraid to tell my fans, worried I might scare you off. But when I went on the road for I AM ENOUGH and I met the people who listen to my music, something happened:
YOU TOLD ME YOUR STORIES.
Around kitchen tables with coffee, on back porches or front stoops, on couches with wine or standing around my car, at my merch table or while helping me pack up my keyboard after the show. Amazing humans — you opened your heart, you told me your stories, you pulled up your sleeves, you showed me your scars. You told me your struggles with mental illness and self-love, bullying in school and PTSD, sexual assault and familial nonacceptance, gender dysphoria and abusive relationships, love and pain. Your truth was like mine. You made me realize that I wasn’t alone because I was surrounded by a group of weird, awesome misfits just like me. So, instead of ignoring the pain of living with Bipolar Disorder, I wrote through my darkness. The result was a collection of songs centered around one theme: finding the light in the struggle. The result is GLIMMER.
NOW I NEED YOUR HELP TO MAKE THIS RECORD.
// MAKING G L I M M E R //
RECORDING: GLIMMER will be recorded at Suckerpunch Recording Studios, in Bethesda, MD, owned by Mark Williams, who produced my first record, I AM ENOUGH. I am so happy to announce Mark will also be producing GLIMMER! Mark is a close friend and very familiar with my story and struggle with mental illness. He’s been there for me in some of my darkest times. He's a good human, an ally with a big heart, and I feel these songs are safe in his hands. Everyone say, "Hi Mark"!
LIVE BAND: I’m beyond excited to announce that I have a new backing band. Joe Stevens (bassist) is transgender, JJ Jones (drums) is a lesbian, and together we form what we’re affectionately calling an “epic queer band”. They play my music beautifully and our connection is powerful. Their belief in my mission is strong -- they play my songs as if they’re their own, and I'm honored to have them by my side. With your help, I can take them on the road NEXT FALL (see: $35K goal).
// BUDGET & GOALS //
The more money we raise, the more humans we can help. THE MORE MONEY WE RAISE, THE BETTER MY VIDEOS, TOURS, AND LIVE SHOWS WILL BE.
--> $25,000. THE ESSENTIALS. If the Kickstarter gets funded at this first level, I record GLIMMER and make a music video; I realize my vision of making a record for the sole purpose of empowering those who struggle with mental illness.
--> $35,000. THE NEXT STEP. At this stage, I manufacture CDs and merch. I also create the live show of my dreams with a new stage piano, a drum machine, and…. *DRUM ROLL PLEASE*… a tour with my “queer supergroup”, featuring JJ Jones (of Girlyman) and Joe Stevens (of Coyote Grace)! I love them. They make my music explode with sound, and I cannot wait for you to see this new live show.
--> $45,000. THE BIG BANG. At this level, there’s more color, more fun, and more play. I make TWO additional music videos, GLIMMER gets pressed to vinyl (a dream come true), and I get to work with a digital promoter to help me get my music onto official Spotify playlists (HUGE FOR INDEPENDENT ARTISTS)!
If we surpass $45K, the goals just get bigger: buy-ons to open for larger touring acts, a touring van for me and the band, extended full-band tours, and bigger and bolder music videos. I'll include these updated stretch goals as the Kickstarter rolls along, but our FIRST STEP is to reach $25,000.
We can do this!!

DONATE. When you buy a ticket to a concert, I pay for gas to my next gig. When you donate to my Kickstarter, I make a record. No matter what amount you can give, every bit helps. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE.
YOU ARE THE FUEL FOR THE GLIMMER FIRE. Share the link, click it every day, and use the hashtag #BETHEGLIMMER. Who are five people in your life who need to know they aren't alone? Share the link with them and ask them to share it with five people in their life! I am just one person, but if 50 people share the link to 10 of their friends, that’s 500 humans looking at the Kickstarter every day!

I believe in these songs. I believe in my mission of mental health advocacy through music. I can see the next two years unfolding in front of me, singing these songs to thousands of people who need to know they aren't alone. I fiercely believe in this record.
Fighters and light-seekers, help me make this album.
Risks and challenges
There is zero risk, other than not making our goal - but I have hope and I believe we can do it.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
