About this project
We’re Head for the Hills, a mostly acoustic band from Fort Collins, Colorado. We play bluegrass music, but we use the form and instrumentation of bluegrass to go other places. Our upcoming third studio record, Blue Ruin, is an exploration of those places. We’ve always brought other styles into the fold and the new songs are deeper still, but we need your help to make it a reality.
As you know, the music industry has changed and the old rules of record deals and budgets just don’t apply today. For Head for the Hills, that means we self-fund everything we do. Tours, recording, merchandise—everything. In laying out plans for our third studio album, it quickly became clear that in order to fulfill our vision and deliver a next level production, we were going to need some help. That’s where you and Kickstarter come in.
In some ways, Kickstarter is an enhanced method of preordering CDs. Unlike traditional preorders though, it doesn’t stop there. Kickstarter allows you to become intimately involved with making the record, and lets us offer creative and personalized incentives that we are really excited about.
We started the record earlier this year, but we’re far from done. There is still a lot of recording to do as well as final mixing and mastering. From there, CDs and high quality vinyl will be pressed and we will embark on the time consuming and expensive process of promoting and distributing the album. We have already personally invested significant funds and will continue to do so, but unfortunately, it's just not enough.
Here is a basic breakdown of remaining costs:
- Recording, mixing and mastering: $8,300
- Artwork: $2,500
- Vinyl/CD Manufacturing: $5,000
- Promotion, publicity and marketing: $12,000
- Total: $27,700
Recording is being done at SwingFingers Studios, just outside our hometown of Fort Collins with ace engineer and stellar banjo player Aaron Youngberg. Aaron has an amazing combination of technology and know-how at his disposal and we’ve developed a great working relationship. He’s really helping to bring out the best sound and performance on each take!
We're very excited to have one of the band's favorite artists, renowned screenprint maestro Timothy Doyle on board for cover art. Doyle's work has been featured by NASA, Industrial Light and Magic, the Campaign to Re-elect President Barack Obama, Yo Gabba Gabba, as well as bands like The Black Keys, Primus and many more.

If you are looking for a custom art piece, at the $400 level Joe--fiddle player and vocalist from Head for the Hills--will work with you to design and create a painting. Look below for a sample of his awesome work:
Also from Joe are custom painted Ukeleles, check out a photo of the amazing detail:
At the upper levels we're offering special private performances. Head for the Hills will come to your home (or your friends house, your office, the back of your pickup truck etc) and play a private show for you and your closest friends. You could even pool your funds with friends and have a joint party. Have a bar mitzvah coming up? Anniversary? Need an excuse to host your friends and show off the new self portrait you've hung awkwardly above your fireplace? Pledge at the $5,000 or $7,500 levels and we'll come to you.
If we exceed our goal by more than $500, EVERYONE gets air fresheners, but if we don’t meet our goal, you aren’t charged and we don’t receive any of the funds--so help us at whatever level you can!
This record will mark the fullest realization of our creative aspirations; both musically and aesthetically, and we’re eager for you to hear it, see it and hold it. We hope you’ll be a part of Blue Ruin and pledge today. Thanks!

- Q: What happens if you don't reach your goal?
- A: If we don’t meet our goal, you aren’t charged and we don’t receive any of the funds--so help us at whatever level you can!
- Q: What happens if you exceed your goal?
- A: Everyone gets air fresheners! As you can see above, the $20,000 we're asking for doesn't quite cover our remaining costs. Raising more money allows us to get the music in more ears faster with improved marketing and publicity.
- Q: If I pledge, when is my card charged?
- If you pledge your card will only be charged when we successfully complete the campaign, on December 8th, 2012. If we aren't successful and don't reach our goal you card will never be charged.
- Q: I really want to pledge but I don't see a reward package I want, what can we do?
- A: Contact us and we'll absolutely work something out.
Risks and challenges
Making a record is always full of challenges, both routine and unexpected. After almost 10 years as band, we've come to learn to roll with these punches and adapt as the situation requires. Our last release, "Live," was full of such unpredictable ups and downs; including the mixing studio changing hands right as we were finishing! Needless to say we made it though like we always do, with hard work, a little ingenuity and the help of our friends.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
