About

Sadly we have to cancel our Kickstarter campaign.

Long story short: Our manufacturer let us down. We negotiated a definite production of the qlib in August. Now we received word that the manufacturer has a bigger contract until the end of the year. So our production will not be possible until beginning of next year ... maybe. On this basis we don't want to proceed.

So now we have to look for a new manufacturer (or two), reschedule, recalculate, reboot... Luckily the campaign wasn't finished yet, so we have the chance not to be one of those projects that promise a lot but don't deliver on time.

Anyhow, good news everyone: We're not giving up. Our target is to restart the campaign within the next months. Leave your email address at http://qlib.it/kickstarter and we will let you know when it happens!

See you then

Martin, Richard, Steffi, Bengt & Ludwig

------------------------------------

Original campaign description:

May we present: the qlib - iconic, beautiful and versatile. The qlib is an add on for any IKEA KALLAX or EXPEDIT shelf. In no time your standard shelve is a unique und colorful piece - you simply clip the qlib onto your doors and you're done. It is IKEAhacking made easy!

While many projects get delayed because they haven't finished development yet, the qlib is different: Product development was done at our own expense, with the money we raise on Kickstarter we move into production right away! So there is an actual risk, that we will deliver on time ... ;-)

You love the qlib? You want the qlib? Support our Kickstarter campaign and let`s make the world more colorful. There are two basic options:

Whatever pledge you choose: Make sure to spread the word, so we can reach our funding goal

Did you ever roam around the IKEA kids section and wonder why there is no really colorful kids furniture? They have pale blue, pale green and pale rose as a color, but colorful ... that is what you see when you look onto a pile of LEGO bricks...

That is why we spent the last months, bringing the qlib to life. It comes in at least eight different colors to give your (kids) shelves the color they deserve. And now we want our qlib to become yours! All images you can see so far are pictures of our prototypes.

The qlib easily clips on to your current IKEA Kallax or Expedit doors:

In addition, you can use it as a back panel:

We had a lot of fun building it and creating the first designs. See what we made along the way:

We would love to see your creations - share your designs on Twitter, Facebook, Flickr or even Youtube & Vimeo. Make sure to let us know- Hashtag #qlib ! You will get the chance to win the qlibs necessary to create your design by the end of the campaign - we'll pay for it!

Our pledge levels are clearly structured: The more you order, the better the price. You can always get one or more extra qlibs, just add the specified amount to your pledge (as mentioned at the end of your pledge description).

If you are among the first backers, you are lucky: We offer a special discount price: 25€ for two qlibs plus 12,50€ for any additional qlib. It won't get any cheaper! In addition, you'll receive priority shipping, so your packages will be the first on their way.

colors

The qlib will be available in at least 8 different colors. Depending on the success of the campaign, we will offer additional colors for you to choose from (please see stretch goals below). For a start, here are our picks:

Please note: These are screen colors, the pantone color palette we choose from is optimized for ABS plastic and may look different

 your choice

By the end of the campaign, you will be able to choose any color combination you like - no matter if it is one of each, all the same color or any mix you like.

Maybe you are one of the people who are truly amazed by this project, but the qlib simply doesn't fit your interior style. To those backers we wanted to offer a special opportunity instead of the typical "1$ - thanks for supporting us"-pledge. We designed the qlib to put smiles on people’s faces, especially children’s faces! With that in mind we reached out to the German Children Hospice & Family Foundation (DKFS). And they happily accepted our offer!

The goal of our Patch Adams Package is to bring the colorful variations of the qlib into children hospices and other facilities of the DKFS throughout Germany. You can pledge any amount you like, and we will use half of it to buy shelves & doors. The other half will be used to fund our campaign, and in return we will personally deliver & assemble these shelves.

We will document it for you & post a special update with all pictures and our personal experience.

About the DKFS: Mainly, this foundation funds facilities for seriously and terminally ill children. The nurses and caregivers in these facilities know and experience every day the hardships and sorrows of the families. In an environment far from a sterile hospital atmosphere, they offer medical and psycho-social care for all guests. You can get more information about their work and current projects on their homepage.

From other Kickstarter projects we have learned: Either a project really takes off, or it doesn't. If you like the qlib as much as we do and we get way past our initial funding goal, this money won't vanish in our pockets. Here is what we thought of:

free knobs @ 85.000€

While 75.000 € is necessary for the tooling and production of all your qlibs for you, this is our true funding goal. So far we have invested a lot of our time and some money in this campaign - for prototypes, the video production, the design application and so on. As a thank you, we'll throw two door knobs in each of your packages.

Click on the image to see how you can make this yourself - we made step-by-step instructions for you!

If you want to pick up your qlib in person, you'll get a free hug as well...

production speedup @ 100.000€

We will be able to knock off two to three weeks from the production time: The reason is simple: The tooling will be done in Asia, production in Europe. So the tool needs to get to Europe somehow. The cheap way is to do it by boat, the faster way is to do it by plane. In case we hit 100.000€, we will transport the tool by plane, so the production can start a lot earlier.

2 additional color @ 150.000€

You pick color number 9 & 10: All existing backers will be able to choose two additional colors until the end of the campaign. It will be added to our backer kit survey and produced in the first production run. This is more of an intermediate goal on the way to the 250.000€ mark...

drawer fronts @ 250.000€

The KALLAX series also comes with additional drawers. So the design is a no-brainer: Make 2x1 drawer fronts. With 250.000€ we will have enough money for an extra tool and the design process. As a backer of the qlib, you will get the drawer fronts for just as much money as we need to produce & ship it.

Since we haven't started developing this yet, of course we won't be able to deliver it in September/October along with the qlib. We will contact you when we are ready for production.

The qlib currently exists in CAD as well as various prototypes made by deep drawing press (shown in the animation). We made several prototypes with different forms before finalizing our CAD designs. We reached a high precisely fitting to the doors by try and error, 3D print and some simulations. For the injection molding we simulated the CAD designs to reach better physical behavior and good fitting to the doors. We also simulated the injection process to find out how the tooling should be.

Our prototypes were made with various techniques in a drawing press. The actual production will be done by injection molding

The qlib complies with international rules for safety as CE and GS, but we can not certify it since we don't have a final product yet. With colored ABS plastic as a material, the qlib also complies with environmental sustainability rules. ABS plastic is used for a large number of toys, including LEGObricks, so no health issues should arise. But please note: Improper usage, especially in conjunction with high pressure might cause that the qlib breaks, the sharp-edged pieces would be a danger to your children.

The CAD is now ready for production. We work together with an experienced European manufacturer and certified suppliers for the final production of the qlib.

As you can see below, there is a lot to do the moment we reach our funding goal. And we’re really looking forward to handle all these tasks.

So if everything works out as planned you can clip your qlib to your Kallax starting in September this year.

 http://qlib.it/faq

We have collected the questions our friends and partners had, when we introduced the qlib to them. Alongside the campaign, we will update the faq with the things you want to know.

It all started with this empty corner in Martin's study. Some shelve needed to go there to display some of his LEGO models, but also to store instructions and other things. While Martin is no good at drawing, of course he built some LEGO models. Those models turned into an idea: Why not make a shelf that looks exactly like the LEGO model, just a lot bigger. So he used some coasters and doors to combine them to look like a giant LEGO brick, made some more and painted them in different colors.

When all was put together and decorated, it looked awesome! But while Martin doesn’t like to keep things to himself, he even made instructions along the way for others - you can still check them out on SnapGuide. He also showed it to his friends, their kids and other IKEAhackers. From then on one question kept coming: Where can I get these? And: Could you make some for me.

Unfortunately, the original design was not very durable, even without kids around as you can see on these photos taken one year after the original design was finished:

To go forward with the goal, Martin had to assemble a team with certain skills. That is how Richard, Steffi, Ludwig and Bengt came on board and together, they got to work.

the core team

Martin is the creative mind behind the qlib. He is seriously nuts about LEGO & has infected the rest of the team with his enthusiasm. His DIY-addiction combined with a borderline OCD drives him to realize his many ideas with his own hands, creating functional and unique pieces.

Richard met Martin at university many years ago. They quickly realized that they complement each other perfectly. Ever since, together they bring ideas to life. Richard brings Martins ideas to a higher level by his technical know how. You can trust him ... he is an engineer.

Steffi loves figures and tables, after all she is the businesswoman in the team. Whenever Martin & Richard get lost in their own little world, she brings critique and alternatives to the table in order to structure the creative chaos.

Ludwig is the one who knows how to transform Martins ideas into products. As a product designer he brings 10 years of professional experience to the team, with important connections to manufacturers & retailers. With an eye for perfection, he makes sure that everything from prototype to final product looks spot on.

Bengt is a studied computer scientist, therefore the team’s software developer and graphic designer. His programming skills brought Martins idea of the design generator to life in only a few hours. The website and logo also carry his unique signature.

we could not have done this without:

Sonja is Martins creative spouse, developing and pushing ideas back and forth with him all the time.

Steve is the man behind the camera and co-writer of the script. With him, the whole campaign video was shot in less than two days.

Jessica is the voice behind the video and a trained radio presenter. If you liked her voice and need one just like it for your project, get in touch.

And finally:

Charlotte was so kind to play young Martin in the video. She was the first choice, since everyone says she takes after him...

Our challenge is to convert our prototypes into a series product. We have gained experience in series development in various projects and can therefore assess the potential risks realistically.

What have we already done? All necessary preparations have been completed. We selected a certified and experienced production partner, who accompanied us with his know-how from the very beginning.

What has to be done? Our milestones are to:

  • reach the funding goal
  • manufacture the tool
  • produce first batch
  • ship to backers

To reach the funding goal is your job, we do the rest.

Delays could occur while manufacturing the tool. The manufacturing is planned with 10 weeks, but only if the sampling meets our requirements. The completion of the tool may be delayed, so that our scheduled delivery might move backwards.

We have carefully selected our production partner, he has years of experience in the manufacture of injection molds and the production of injection elements, but a residual risk remains. For backer management, fulfillment and shipping we rely on crowdfunding experienced providers, so we make sure that you have your qlib(s) on time.

But we are only human. No matter what happens we will share any news with you!
