Like 40 million others, I suffer from anxiety. This book details its effects on my life, my loves and my career. It’s the most personal story I’ve ever told but I hope that many of you will be able to relate to it. I’m hoping it helps you because making it has helped me. It has given me a brand new perspective on my illness.
It’s not a subject of shame. It’s a symbol of strength.
We don’t have to let anxiety drown us. We can float.
Float is told from the perspective of three characters which act as symbolic stand ins for my personality. Their tales all converge with a confrontation of the glass ceiling overhead.
In its discussion of anxiety, this graphic memoir also reinterprets the glass ceiling. While the term is generally associated with women and minorities in their careers, it easily applies to those who deal with mental illness in their profession, and the stigma it carries. In the book, I have illustrated the ceiling as a physical threat.
We are now unlocking some amazing stretch goals on our way to the Float hardcover edition!
I am excited to present this book to the public, as it is a departure from my previous work and a personal testimony of mental illness. I am an award-winning graduate of Pratt Institute and a freelance illustrator. My first graphic novel, Mr. Scootles, was published in 2008 by Alterna Comics. In April of 2009, my series Tara Normal launched as a popular weekly webcomic. It was awarded the 2009 WRCA Reader’s Choice Award for Best New Comic and appeared in TAPS Paramagazine, the official publication of the show Ghost Hunters on SyFy. I won the 2016 Spacie Award for Best Independent Comic Artist. In addition to illustration work for clients such as CBS Radio, T-Mobile, and two holiday themed pieces for the official Walking Dead website, I have also illustrated stories in the comic book collections Nightmare World, Tales of Mr. Rhee and Love Stories (To Die For) written by Dirk Manning and published by Devil's Due Entertainment.
During this exciting new art project, I’ve collaborated with my friend, musician Victor Guest. Victor is a brilliant artist and working with him to expand the dimensions and scope of this project has been a dream come true. He’s creating a soundtrack to accompany this book. It will allow readers to experience Float in a unique way.
As part of this art project, my wife Shelley has created YourGlassCeiling.com. The website gives people the chance to really see into my life and how it's shaped this project. We're even giving people the chance to share their personal experiences on the Breakthrough Moments section of the site.
You can also view full pages of artwork from Float at this link: http://yourglassceiling.com/category/making-of/the-art-of-floating/
With your help, Float will become a unique visual and audio artistic presentation.
All of our rewards are Kickstarter exclusives and will not be available anywhere else. We have set up multiple rounds of stretch goals so that if we raise the necessary money Float will become a Kickstarter exclusive prestige format hardcover edition just for Float backers! We have to unlock all of them to achieve this ultimate goal.
Here are some of the great rewards we are offering.
Risks and challenges
As I'm writing this, the artwork for Float is 90% completed so any risk is minimal. I have previously run two successful Kickstarter campaigns in the past and I love this site for the platform it offers indie creators.
I promise to update all of my backers in case any unforeseen "Acts of God" arise such as printing and manufacturing delays.
Thank you for supporting unique projects such as this one on Kickstarter. In today's tough publishing climate, you make it possible for stories like mine to be shared.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
