About this project
Dropfleet Commander is planetary invasion wargame designed and produced by Hawk Wargames. Players command destructive fleets of void capable ships and battle for control of planets, fighting for the future of mankind itself!
You will take command of orbital battle fleets vying for control of the Cradle Worlds; Humanity’s home planets for hundreds of years, now under the tyrannical control of the parasitic Scourge race.
The Dropfleet Commander 2 Player Starter set includes two fleets of ships: The brave United Colonies of Mankind, fighting to retake humanity’s lost worlds, and the insidious Scourge, parasitic oppressors who will stop at nothing to enslave and subjugate all the human race holds dear.
Principal designers Andy Chambers (Battlefleet Gothic, Warhammer 40,000) and David J Lewis (Dropzone Commander) bring you a galaxy of ship-to-ship combat, tactical gameplay, and rich, exciting background from the world of Dropzone Commander.
We are running this Kickstarter in order to help fund the high cost of moulds for plastic miniatures, which will allow us to put our Starter Fleets into production in full plastic from launch.
Since we are almost ready to release the game, we are looking to dispatch to backers as soon as we are able; barring any major problems we are planning to deliver in June 2016. We are also committed to fulfilling our pledges before any Dropfleet Commander products are on sale – our backers will receive their rewards before anyone else.
The 2 player starter box gives you everything you’ll need to start playing Dropfleet Commander:
14 highly detailed plastic ship miniatures, including: 6 Cruisers, 4 Frigates and 4 Strike Carriers (UCM and Scourge) each with multiple possible ship variations, and including new integrated-dial bases. A construction guide for each variant will also be included.
A full colour 4ft x 3ft (approx.) starter gaming mat. Dropfleet is an Orbital Combat Game designed to be played above the surface of a planet. This results in gaming tables unlike any other spaceship game!

Choose the pledge level that you want (to the right), Or click ‘Back This Project’ at the top of your screen and enter the amount you want to pledge.
(You can change this before the Kickstarter ends). We send out a link to a pledge manager once the campaign has concluded, so you can confirm your details and which Bolt-ons you would like. You won't pay anything until the campaign has concluded. We have been adding stretch goals which when achieved, unlock Bolt-Ons which can be added to your pledge. There are also a number of free rewards.
The pledge levels you can pick from are listed in detail below. We have been fortunate enough to hit our initial funding goal, and as such have added stretch goals that if achieved, will unlock Bolt-Ons. There are two tiers of free rewards - the "All Backer" rewards (given to all backers) and the "High Rank" rewards (given to backers of the Captain Pledge level and above).
All of the pledge levels are a saving on the planned RRP. We are aiming to send rewards out by the end of June 2016, though this date might be subject to change if any large unforeseen situations occur. We will be keeping backers informed regularly, and are committed to making sure that backers receive their rewards before any copies of the game go on public sale.
With all of the below pledge levels, you can add any Bolt-Ons to your pledge that might be unlocked during the Kickstarter:
The rewards for the Lieutenant Pledge include the Dropfleet Commander Full Colour Rulebook and one Plastic Starter Fleet. Backers of this level will receive any free "All Backer" rewards.
The rewards for the Commander Pledge include the Dropfleet Commander 2 Player Starter Set, which contains the UCM and Scourge Fleets, complete full-sized Full Colour Dropfleet Commander Rulebook, dice, templates, tape measure, launch asset tokens, starter battle mat and cluster tokens. Backers of this level will receive any free "All Backer" rewards.
The rewards for the Captain Pledge include two copies of the 2 Player Starter Set (as detailed above), providing two larger UCM and Scourge fleets, along with two sets of all the game accessories found in the 2 Player Starter Set. Backers of this level will receive any free "All Backer" rewards, as well as any free "High Rank" rewards.
This pledge also includes the KS Exclusive UCMF Atlantis model. This Kickstarter exclusive model is only available to backers of Captain, Commodore or Admiral Pledge levels and will never be available anywhere but via these two levels. (We have announced that further KS only Battlecruisers will be unlocked before the conclusion of this Campaign).
The rewards for the Commodore Pledge include One Dropfleet Commander 2 Player Starter Set, containing Scourge and UCM starter Fleets, terrain and accessories needed to play a starter set game, 2 Faction Starter Fleets (UCM, Scourge, PHR, Shaltari), The Kickstarter Exclusive UCMF Atlantis model, Plus 3 Kickstarter Exclusive Battlecruisers (choice from those unlocking on the 25th Nov) NB - backers can choose any combination from those unlocking, but the Atlantis remains one model per backer. Backers of this level will receive any free "All Backer" rewards, as well as any free "High Rank" rewards.
This pledge level is limited. The rewards for the Admiral Pledge include everything from the Campaign. It contains two 2 Player Starter Sets as well as one of every reward (including the Kickstarter Exclusive UCMF Atlantis model), and every bolt-on from the start to the finish of this campaign (a full list will be updated during the campaign). The Admiral Pledge level also includes something that is only available to these backers: Beta access to the game.
Hawk Wargames will be running Beta Test Days, which will allow Admiral Pledge backers early access to test the game out. As part of the rewards for backing, backers will also receive a numbered beta copy of the rules, signed by the Hawk Wargames Team. The Beta Test Days are currently being scheduled for the UK and USA around February/March (though more locations may be added if popularity for this pledge level from other areas is enough) and all Admiral Backers will be invited, along with one guest each, to meet the team and play some games, allowing us to get invaluable external feedback on the system before it is released. The backers of this pledge level will also be able to ask questions to the design team as well as seeing and playing with some of the early prototypes. This experience will allow backers to truly be a part of the final Play-testing process, giving feedback about the game before it goes to print, and will help us to put the finishing touches to Dropfleet Commander.
You can also use bolt-ons to add to your initial pledge level. Here is the current list of Bolt-Ons available (more will be unlocked as we reach stretch goals):
Thank you for your support in hitting our initial target! We have created a plan for Stretch Goals which include a variety of different types of unlocks: Financial Stretch Goals (which unlock Bolt-Ons and Free Rewards), Numbers of Backers Goals (which unlock Free Rewards), and Timed Based Unlocks (which unlock Bolt-Ons). The current unlocks and Stretch Goals are listed below:
Below you will find some detail and features on specific elements that have been made for Dropfleet Commander. We wanted to start with the Dropfleet Commander Bases we have designed for this game:
These Bases work to manage many of the features of this game linked with each spaceship, meaning there are very few tokens that need to be placed during the game. Here is an explanation of what each part of the base does:
We have worked hard to create something which is easy to use in the game, and streamlines everything for players.

And PHR Frigates:
The game centres on ship to ship combat and planetary invasion. Using alternative activations, fleet commanders manoeuvre, engage the enemy and drop troops in a highly tactical combat simulation. A unique weapons range system and seamless interaction between ground and space combat make the game utterly different and new, while keeping elements that long time wargamers will know and love.
Games can range in size from under an hour to a few hours, depending on the size of the engagement players want to have. Each player uses a fleet of an agreed size, structured as described in the rulebook that comes with the game. This creates a balanced gaming system, but also allows players to enjoy scenarios where they might be outnumbered, have attackers and defenders, or fight famous battles from the Dropfleet Commander universe.
The outcome of the game is decided by victory points. The objectives will depend on scenarios and sub-missions for each player, and no two games will be the same. The system also allows pre-set missions to be chosen to permit specific tournament and competitive play.
For more information on the how to play the game, check out the videos below. These will be added to during the campaign.

Since 2012 Hawk Wargames have been hard at work creating Dropzone Commander, a highly tactical 10mm scale massed battle game. More than tripling in size since its inception, Hawk Wargames specialises in high quality miniatures, balanced play and tactically enjoyable games. Working with Andy Chamber on this project has allowed the game to become something potentially even more special. Dropfleet Commander pulls on the experience of both Andy Chambers and the background created within Dropzone Commander by David J Lewis. Here is the team who are making it all happen:
The whole team have been involved in some way in the creation of Dropfleet Commander to this stage to varying degrees, and we are all excited to see what the next stage is with this growing universe.
Shipping of your rewards is broken down into very simple categories, and is as low as we can make it. No matter how much you add to your pledge your shipping cost won’t increase. Free shipping applies for all Admiral Pledge level backers.
All Other Shipping Costs:
UK – Free shiping
EU Countries – £5
The Rest of the World – £10
We're dedicated to supporting local gaming stores and clubs, which is why only the core game features will be offered on this Kickstarter Campaign. If you are a retailer and would like to have Dropfleet Commander available to customers upon release, we have several ways to get involved. We are working with our Distribution Partners to ensure that you can get what you are looking for from Dropfleet Commander. Contact us through our trade email: email@example.com to find out more, or if you have any questions. Though it will be a busy period, we will endeavour to get back to enquiries as quickly as we can!
Risks and challenges
With any new project comes a range of risks and challenges. This is our first Kickstarter, and there are many things to consider just when it comes to running a campaign such as this.
Lengthy research into other Kickstarter projects as well as our desire for excellent customer service has led us to plan as much as we can, as far in advance as possible, and to have as much of the work done before anything went live. We have the rules at a beta test stage, and though there are few models left to sculpt and studio paint, our production processes are set up, along with fulfilment agreements. The main reason for running this Kickstarter is for the manufacture of the tools for the plastic sprues, which is ultimately the one element we have not manufactured at this point.
These points, added to the fact that we manufacture in the UK rather than sourcing from other countries or continents, means reduced turnaround times and greater reliability on quality as well as timings.
This does not preclude production problems, or avoid any unforeseen complications in production or delivery. However it does mean that we are better equipped to deal with any problems that could arise, and that we can be physically on the spot with our team to solve any such situations.
We have had experience in creating plastic sets before, with Dropzone Commander, and have worked with all our manufacturers before on a range of products, so are confident in our ability to deliver a high quality game in Dropfleet Commander, both in terms of product quality and, of course, gameplay value!
If we do have problems, the key is also to communicate these, and as such we have a committed team to manage communication with backers both throughout and after the Kickstarter campaign. If we are successful in our campaign, we aim to routinely communicate with updates on the progress of developments in design, manufacturing, and dispatch of the game and the pledge levels that backers have supported us with.
We are committed to quality and speed of delivery, but also loyal to our backers; it is our intention not to put any of the kickstarted game elements up for sale through retail until all backers have received their pledge levels.
We also want to support distributors, retailers and local gaming groups, and not treat Kickstarter as a store front, so we are also pledging that a variety of products in the entire planned product range (such as command units, larger and smaller ships and a range of other scenery items) will not be available via our Kickstarter campaign.
We hope we can live up to and build upon our good customer service record that we have up to date.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
To add bolt ons, simply:
1) Click the green button at the top right of this page.
2) Then amend your pledge amount to include the cost of the bolt on - Add this to your existing pledge level (e.g. add £14 for a battlecruiser, £5 for activation card pack etc).
3) Click the green button again.
When you do this you are effectively adding money to a pot, that you can then use a the end of the campaign - you are not choosing what you want at this stage, and are not locked into getting that particular bolt on.
At the end of the campaign we will have a pledge manager that will ask for your choices, at which point you use your pot of money to choose which bolt ons you would like; you can also add to the pot at that point to get more stuff, or go for kickstarter exclusives that you're tempted by! See below for an example:
E.G - You add £35 to your pledge, intending to get an extra UCM starter set.
You aren't locked into this set at that point.
When in the pledge manager, you decide you'd rather have a alien map set and two sets of faction dice, so you can chose them instead, using the £35 for that.
You also decide you'd like a signed art print, so add £25 on the Pledge manager, which confirms your choices.
We send you your goodies in June!
Do I get bases with the freebies? Also, do I get the bases i need in the box? If so, why is there a bases pack bolt on?
All of the models on the kickstarter, including all freebies and the starter sets and 2 player starter box come with the size appropriate bases that they need. The extra bases pack bolt on is available because a series of backers ask if we would sell the bases on their own for conversion purposes, which we are happy to do.
Can I swap out a faction for different faction in the two player starter set? i.e. Can I have UCM and Shaltari instead of UCM and Scourge (or other variations?)
Unfortunately we are not able to offer this as an option as it’s logistically not viable for us to do so. As with all aspects of this Kickstarter Campaign, we’re keen to offer pledges and stretch goals that we believe backers will want, but we also never want to over promise and then become unable to deliver on our promises.
A Resistance faction is not possible to create in terms of the background and character of the universe as an entire fleet. We would like to involve them in some way, but there are no plans to do a fleet of resistance as a standalone faction.
Stretch goals allow us to create even more units and elements to the game on launch, and pass the benefits and possibilities on to you. They also contain a range of things, from free add-ons for all backers to exclusive content that you can add to your pledge. Many of these are only (and will only ever be) available for backers on Kickstarter, so you’ll be one of the few to have access to them, as well as getting free stuff with your existing pledge!
We originally planned out the stretch goals with a view to a much slower growth in our pledge total; having been shocked by the level of support, we had to plan further things. We now have a list of future goals up, and if we are fortunate to have backing past that level, we will release even more goals.
At the end of the Kickstarter each backer will get a survey pledge manager to fill in that lists which pledge level and bolt-ons you have pledged. At this point you can choose your items and add any further Bolt-ons or Sets you would like. Please note that limited pledge levels cannot be upgraded too.
With Dropfleet Commander we have been very keen to ensure that the gameplay is central to the concept. We don’t want to take an existing game and just add different looking models, nor do we want to produce a thinly veiled copy of a different game. By focusing on the interaction with planets and introducing a brand new mechanic in terms of ranges and weapons fire, we believe we have married great models with innovative gameplay to create something entirely new.
Put simply, we want to bring Dropfleet Commander to you in the most versatile, detailed and user friendly way possible, which we feel means plastic models. While we are a growing company, the capital outlay for plastic moulds for everything we’d like to achieve is very high. Kickstarter lets us fund some of this cost and gives fans of the Dropzone universe a chance to help be a part of the future of Hawk Wargames.
I’ve backed other Kickstarters and I’ve still yet to receive my goods, in some cases when the game is in the shops to buy! What stops this happening again?
We’re committed to this not happening. As far as is humanly possible we will confirm that each backer has their rewards before the game hits stores, with some time difference between the two delivery dates. We are close to finalising the rules system, and are aiming to have everything possible in place and ready before the Kickstarter ends.
We have also been very careful with our freebies, extras and stretch goals so that we don’t over promise on anything and then find that either we can’t deliver or, worse still, that with the number of backers and rewards to be sent out we are unable to fulfil the kickstarter’s original purpose. We understand that this slower, more thought out process might be frustrating for some backers, but we are keen to get things right rather than rushed.
We are already preparing everything we’ll need to get the game to backers as soon as possible once the Kickstarter Campaign has finished this December. The first step after the campaign is for each backer to fill out their survey and pledge manager, letting us know there delivery information, add-on preferences, and if they would like to add or choose other items for their pledge. From there we will put the final game into production. Our current delivery time is estimated for June 2016. What we can promise is that we will keep backers constantly updated with news, sneak peaks and information on a regular basis to let you know the progress of the production and delivery.
Postage will vary depending upon the region you are in. The game itself (along with any add-ons purchased) will be fairly heavy, however as another bonus to backers we are reducing our usual rates on postage to the below:
UK: Free postage
EU: £5 Postage
Rest of the World: £10
Kickstarter takes pledges from anywhere in the world – see their FAQ for more information on this. All you will need is a Major credit card. While we would like to be able to take pledges by PayPal or Cheque, Kickstarter is currently unable to support this.
Dropfleet Commander is very much about the invasion of the Cradle worlds on a planetary scale; each ground combat in the game is the equivalent of several ‘Clash’ and ‘Battle’ sized games of Dropzone Commander. However, we have worked hard to create some great crossovers. The Dropfleet Commander rulebook will include directions and tips on doing just that, and we will be releasing future campaigns and curating campaign weekends so that players can enjoy both of these games side by side.
I've applied to the Hawk Forum but I've yet to be accepted. What's going on? How do I get validated?
Firstly, thank you for joining the Forum! IIn terms of activation, we have a page on the forum about this:
