About this project
Cuba conference history:
We have been fortunate to produce two Cuba conferences and this will be our third.
The first was our Learn About Cuba seminar in 2008. We had a number of Cuba experts talking to attendees about Cuban art, culture, history and much more.
The second was our CubaCon conference in Provincetown Massachusetts in 2010. We had even more Cuba experts talking about life in Cuba, Hemingway in Cuba, Cuban art and much more.
Past conference presenters have included:
- Ernest Hemingway archives Director from JFK Library
- History of Havana expert
- Tracey Eaton, journalist who lived and worked in Cuba
- Several Cuban book authors and photographers
- Legal travel to Cuba experts and tour providers
- Art and culture experts
- Cuban art on display and for sale
- Fun Cuba door prizes and LOTS of great conversation!
Several published authors are expected to be on the Presenter list and they will talk about their Cuba experiences. Cuba experts in a variety of areas as well as legal travel to Cuba experts will talk about Cuba travel.
The great things about our conferences are the extraordinarily colorful and knowledgeable presenters and interesting venues but mostly the attendees are REALLY the highlight.
Most are Cuba aficionados or experts in their own areas of interest. Many have been to Cuba several times and enjoy sharing their colorful stories about their trips to Cuba.
Printed Materials for Conference Book
Each attendee, presenter and sponsor is invited to submit printed materials that will be compiled into binders so each person can take away with them, this souvenir and colorful Cuba information binder filled with a variety of Cuba related media.
This "printed material" can be any of the following:
- flyers featuring Cuba related artists or non-profit organization that you wish to promote on their behalf
- promotional materials from our sponsors and presenters regarding their Cuba related product or service
- a Cuban music CD or DVD movie that you want to share with attendees
- Attendee list with names, contact information,Cuba interest and message (only share information you want). This will be a great Cuba information resource.
We expect to need about 100 of each piece of material since we expect about 100 attendees. We will compile the books during the show so attendees will each leave with a binder book. Others will be mailed to supporters not attending the conference.
Please visit the links above to see the list of presenters, venues and other information about our first two conferences.
About the Venue
My daughter attends Boston University and this is a safe, historic and easily accessible part of Boston for locals and visitors. I have already received prices from Boston University regarding venue costs and availability. Prices vary substantially due to size, location and date of event. So, I cannot commit to the exact venue location but at this time, Boston University seems to be the best choice. If not at Boston University, our goal will be to find a venue in a nice part of Boston that is easily accessible by public transportation.
About the Date - May 2014
Boston University exams end on Saturday May 10 and Memorial Day weekend starts on Friday May 23. I would like to plan the conference between these dates but I cannot pick the exact date until I talk with presenters and review venues. I cannot select a venue until I put down a deposit and I need an estimated number of presenters, attendees and sponsors. You will be able to cancel or change your pledge if you cannot attend.
Cuba Conference Agenda
I think Sunday evening May 11 or Sunday May 18 would be a good date to start the conference. People can travel to Boston on Sunday and then in the evening we will plan an informal gathering for those interested to meet before the official conference starts. This is a great way to mingle with other people with Cuba interests.
Monday May 12 or May 19 is the potential full conference date. Maybe we will plan an event or meeting for Tuesday as well but we will plan to have an informal breakfast on Tuesday morning.
So, this will be an evening gathering followed by a full day of conference followed by a morning breakfast. The start day may move into the week with an ending Friday morning... to be determined.
About the Producer
Havana Journal Inc has been a Massachusetts corporation since 2004 and started publishing HavanaJournal.com in March of 2003 so it will be eleven years old in a couple months. The company offers a variety of Cuba services and publishes content to dozens of Cuba related websites.
I hope this project can get funded because I know you will have a great time either as an attendee, presenter or as a sponsor.
About Funding This Project
When will my card be charged? -- If this project reaches its funding goal, your card will be charged on February 28 by Amazon Payments, along with all the other backers of this project.
So my card is only charged if the project is fully funded? -- Correct. If this project is not fully funded, no one pays anything.
Please note that you can change or cancel your pledge anytime, for any reason, before Monday February 28.
All payments are made via Amazon Payments so Havana Journal Inc. does not see your credit card information.
After you agree to fund this project, you will get email confirming the pledged amount but there will be no charge until, and unless, the project is fully funded.
If you want to buy multiples of the same reward, for example buying more than one admission, just pledge your multiple times the reward (2 x $99 for two attendees = pledge of $198).
Publisher, Havana Journal Inc. and Cuban Art and Legal Travel to Cuba conference organizer.
Risks and challenges
Since we have successfully produced two Cuba conferences already (with websites still up with agendas, presenter lists etc), we see no reason why we cannot produce a third successful conference.
We are fortunate to know MANY Cuba experts and legal travel to Cuba providers, have the choice of many venues in Boston, expect many paying attendees and sponsors so as we get closer to full funding for this project, I will move forward with planning and will keep this project updated.
As long as I reach the funding amount of $10,000 there is no reason that I would not follow through with the conference and produce the Cuba binder book as described above.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
