What's Worse Than...? A question we've all at some point asked ourselves. The answer to that question then leading us into a tub of infinite thoughts, slowly adding themselves one on top of the other.
And fun. Which leads us to the concept of our game. What's Worse Than...? poses a simple question/situation that incrementally worsens as the round progresses.
First things, First:
I'm sure you're wondering "how did you come up with the concept of this game?" Well to be frank, this game was a product of my most embarrassing moment. I'm completely new to this space called "outside my comfort zone". It's weird. While being out here I decided to test my creativity and see what others would think so... I created a game (not this one) and decided to demo it in front of my friends. It was the first time I ever stepped outside my introverted self to let people see me; but who cares because everything I touch turns into gold and works out right? So I created an event. I asked a good amount of friends to come over my apartment and planned for a night of great food, drinks and my AMAZING game idea. Well...only 2/3 of those things happened. My game was a flop and I was COMPLETELY embarrassed (I hate being embarrassed and my feelings were seriously hurt lol). My friends left confused, but optimistic that I would get it together. The next morning, I called a close friend (who was high key dying to hear how everything went) and told her about my embarrassment. After explaining what happened (in the most melodramatic way I could) I asked "What could possibly be worse than that?" to which she responded, "sh*ting yourself in front of them". I laughed and added on to her ridiculous comment. We went back and forth for several seconds until finally someone dropped the ball. Then BOOM, a new baby was born.
This game is hands down the greatest result of my shot ego. And I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did creating it.
There are two forms of game play - Party Circle and Rapid Fire.
Party Circle Instructions:
Participants get in a circle. The Reader pulls a card from the deck and reads it out loud. The player to the right of the Reader has 5 seconds to respond to the card, worsening the initial situation. The next player then builds off their response. The best way to think of this is being that asshole in the “Price is Right” who comes after the person who says “1500 Bob” and then says “1501,” …that person. Be that person. If players are too young for that reference, here is another example:
Reader: “What’s worse than skydiving?”
1st person: “Skydiving and it’s your instructor’s first day.”
2nd person: “It’s their first day and they are nervous.”
3rd person: “They’re nervous and someone walks up says someone died yesterday.”
And so on and so forth.
If a player cannot answer in 5 seconds, they are removed from the game, a new card is drawn and the person to the right of the eliminated player becomes the new Reader and starts the new round.
Here’s where it gets a little tricky…
There are 3 key rules:
1. Players have to stay on topic with the original card.
Example of broken rule:
Reader: “what’s worse than skydiving?”
1st Person: “Skydiving and it’s your instructor’s first day.”
2nd Person: “It’s their first day on the job and your wife goes into labor.”
2. The response must include the last statement from the previous player.
1st Person: “Skydiving and it’s your instructor’s first day on the job
2nd Person: “They are nervous.”
3. There are no repeats – meaning neither the initial question, nor someone else’s response can be repeated at any point in the round. Nor can the response be remixed to save you from being kicked out the game.
Reader: “What’s worse than dialing the wrong number?”
1st person: “Dialing the wrong number and an old woman picks up the phone”
2nd person: “An old woman picks up the phone and she thinks you’re her long lost grandson.”
10th person: “And that's why she thought you were her long lost grandson.”
Nah fam, you’re out.
The Reader begins each round by pulling a card and reading it. The Reader can participate, but they go last in the round. The same rules apply to them as everyone else.
The Time Keeper keeps track of time for each player. The time starts immediately after the Reader finishes the question. (Use a cell phone, stop watch, whatever – preferably a cell phone) We shouldn’t have to say to “lap” or restart every time a person takes a turn, so we won’t. What we will say, is that the Time Keeper is the Tie-Breaker of the game. If one player challenges another (we’ll go over that) – the Time Keeper tallies the votes and can ultimately break a tied vote.
Players can challenge the answer of another player at the end of the challenged player’s turn if one of the following occurs:
1. The response didn’t worsen the situation.
2. The answer provided didn’t make sense.
3. The answer appeared redundant – this includes the original question on the pulled card.
Once a player is challenged, the group votes whether the player’s response was valid. If they vote “yes”, the challenged person remains in the game. If “no” then the challenged person is removed from the game. Majority vote wins. The Time Keeper breaks the tie in the event there is one. In either case, whether the player gets eliminated or remains in the game - the round ends, the player to the right of the challenged player becomes the new Reader, and a new round is started.
Rapid Fire Instructions:
The rules and roles are the same for rapid fire. However, instead of sitting in a circle and going behind a predictable person, players throw out answers at any given time. In the event two (or more) people answer at once, the house (person who owns the game or the house everyone is in) determines (prior to the game) what happens next. If one person answers at a time, then the same rules as they would in Party Circle.
