My name is Aaron Hartley and I run theory 8 records in Nashville, TN.
I love music videos. I admit it. I get lost for hours on youtube watching music videos. I'm a child of the 1980's and I remember thinking "I want my MTV" and really meaning it. There are certain songs that I can specifically remember the video for (think Guns N Roses "Paradise City" with Axl in those little white shorts).
I believe that there is a very important promotional shift happening in music right now. New acts need to find ways to be online in a professional manner. I believe music videos are going to be very important in the future as tools to promote an act online and have everyone see them without leaving the comfort of their own home.
I've run my own independent record label for 9 years this August. I've released over 20 records, all on my own, with whatever cash I can scrounge up to promote them. I've learned a lot about how to release an album, how to promote it, how to book a tour, etc, etc. I like to learn by just jumping in and doing things.
I know that I cannot afford to have someone taping every show one of my artists performs. And I can't expect someone to spend their entire Saturday shooting a video and then the next two weeks, editing everything down, for free.
So I've decided to teach myself how to do this. I want to be able to capture my artists performances on tape as much as possible and get them online for people to view. I also want to work with my artists on music video ideas and figure out fun and creative ways to put an idea to tape and see if it works.
Remember the first time you saw The Replacements "Bastards of Young" video? You know, just one single shot of a speaker. Okay, watch it here for a reminder. I'm not saying I'll be as iconic, okay? But I'd love to try.
I know I have a lot to learn and I'm ready. I have plenty of friends who can help me along the way. I have started filming some live footage all ready with my small flip camera for artists like Caitlin Rose and The Winter Sounds.
The money raised will buy camera equipment, editing software and a computer to help me edit the footage after it is shot.
I'm offering, in return for a donation, theory 8's catalog of releases to anyone who donates. You can even earn credit for future releases from the label depending on the donation amount. And if you donate enough money, I'll even shoot some of video for you and edit it and get it online.
