About

Hey Kickstarter! We’re looking to build a hip and comfortable creative space in Hartford for musicians and dancers, and we need your support! Hartford is thriving with talented artists, and giving those artists a welcoming and affordable space to CREATE is what we are aiming to do. Together, the teams at Parkville Sounds and The Dance Collective are going to make this happen.

Last Fall, we created and produced The Parkville Sessions, a 4-part series on CPTV. What we learned during this process is how vital the small business and arts community is. The growing ecosystem of artists and entrepreneurs in Hartford taught us how important creative space is for artists and why we feel moved to provide this space.

Parkville Sounds was created by Stephen Cusano in the spring of 2017, and has been a strong resource for musicians all over Connecticut - providing rehearsal space, music lessons, video sessions, sound rental, and more; all of the tools that musicians need to excel. While Parkville Sounds already has a space of its own, the business has grown and the demand for expansion is apparent. Musicians need a place they can get together and have the freedom to develop their sound, get performance ready, or write new tunes before heading into the recording studio. Building a community of musicians and allowing them to create their work makes for a great music ecosystem. Parkville Sounds currently has only one rehearsal room for musicians. With this new space, we will be able to provide multiple opportunities to practice in an environment that best suites the artists' needs.

The Dance Collective, founded in 2017 by Jillian Foley, aims to provide more opportunities for choreographers and dancers, as well as sharing professional dance performance with the community. To date, we have curated a number of evening length performances and held various classes and events all over the Northeast. The Dance Collective has been hopping from space to space (for rehearsals and performances) since opening; never having a space of our own. Dancers in the area currently have to scramble to find open, affordable studio space, which is rare and difficult to find. There is a need for dance affordable and welcoming rehearsal and performance space in Hartford, not only for us, but for the many artists that occupy the area. In addition, we have found a need for professional adult open dance classes to be held in this city. There are many dance artists (or former dancers) in the area without a place to train and keep in shape AND there are many members of the community looking to practice dance movement as a form of exercise, art, or meditation. This will be an opportunity to share dance with the community with open classes and performances in this new space.

We’ve found the perfect space on Arbor Street in the heart of arts scene in Hartford. The space lends itself to many facets of use for all artists around the state - rehearsal, workshops and master classes, event and performance space.

The space will include:

  • One 2,300 square foot dance studio/event space
  • One large Sound Stage for music
  • One large practice room for musicians
  • Three additional individual or acoustic band practice rooms
  • Private bathroom and dressing room

In order to make this a success, we need your help! To make this space accommodating for artists, a few things we need for our space are:

  • Floors safe to dance on
  • Soundproofing
  • Stage/Rehearsal Lighting
  • Portable mirrors, barres, and exercise equipment
  • Rugs for musicians
  • Chairs for performances
  • Signage
  • Legal fees
  • Water Cooler and hospitality items for artists

*If you’re able to supply any of these items as an in kind donation, we would be so grateful!

Risks and challenges

Our Kickstarter goal of $10,000 is less than the actual amount it will take to make this space a success. Through our other funding efforts, we have already raised $10,000 and we hope to raise up to $40,000 total to further accommodate artists and the space itself.
