This Kickstarter campaign is to raise the funds needed for a second performance of 'Seven Rocks' at INTIME2015 in coventry. This year the theme is Landscapes and environments: experimentation and transformation in sound and music.
- Performance date : Saturday 24th of October 2015.
This piece is in seven movements, for strings and spoken voice inspired by Norman Nicholson's Poems of the same name - excerpts of which punctuate the composition.
The compositional form of the music also represents the processes that each rock undertook in its formation, for example extreme pressure or slow layerings. This is moulded by a more abstract appreciation of the landscape or rock. Slate, for example, is formed of large, fairly featureless slabs with very sharp edges, so this is reflected in the musical texture too. The human voice is an important part of the composition, with selected quotations from each poem in the sequence preceding its associated movement.
Nicholson makes the ordinary vivid and beautiful through a poetics of description. He draws our attention to the inherent beauty that is around us in a warm and considered way that doesn’t shy from literal representation and straightforward language. The fact that this set of poems is in the order of their geological formation appeals to me, there is something honest about that.
I am delighted that the performance will be by members of the remarkable Gildas Quartet. I have been fortunate to have worked with them all many times before and they are fantastic performers!
"...it was the Gildas's acute accounts ... that really made the occasion worthwhile." - Sunday Times
"... the gifted Gildas Quartet ..." - The Times
As well as supporting a composer, young professional musicians and the work of a small literary society there are some tangible rewards for your donation. You can have your name in the score and I can send you a copy of the score itself, printed onto heavy paper and spiral bound. Or the big one, which is a hand screen print of 'Six Impossible compositions before breakfast' which have proved hugely popular. There are now only a few left from this limited print run of 32.
If you want to blast though the project goal why not commission a new piece of your own? Perhaps of another poem by Nicholson? :)
Risks and challenges
The piece has been written and rehersed. The performance date has been set and confirmed, so currently the only hurdle is finding the remaining money. The Rewards have also already been created, so they just need to be shipped out!
If I go over my goal (once all expenses are covered for this performance) I will put any remainder aside specifically earmarked for future projects relating to the poetry of Norman Nicholson.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
