[2014-08-14] We have an important announcement in Update #9/10 re: ThinkPower's name change to PowerX. You may notice some rough edges in the edited video and images resulting from the change.
Why Zettaly PowerX?
Speed: Zettaly PowerX recharges 4-8 times faster than conventional external battery packs, going from empty to fully charged in just 90 minutes.
Convenience: Zettaly PowerX is designed specifically for laptop owners, charging using your existing laptop AC adapter. That means fewer cables to lug around.
This very first model on Kickstarter is catered to Lenovo laptop users (check out FAQs for compatibility with other chargers).
Power: Zettaly PowerX's 10,000mAh capacity extends the life of your tablet, phone, camera or any USB-powered gadget by hours or even days. For example, it can charge an iPhone four times on a single load.
What did the media say?
Gigaom: "It’s a win-win situation: The battery can charge much quicker using the higher amperage, and you can carry one fewer cord around."
Android Authority: "If you were to stop reading there, you would be missing out on why [Zettaly PowerX] is in a league of its own."
Tecent (maker of WeChat): "A perfect companion [for Lenovo laptops]"

What is Zettaly PowerX?
Zettaly PowerX is a 10,000mAh high-capacity battery pack that recharges in 90 minutes. Designed for Lenovo laptop users, our first model of Zettaly PowerX extends the life of your phone, tablet, or any other device that charges via USB. For example, its high-capacity means it can fully charge an iPhone 5 over four times on a single load.
Our patent-pending technology uses your existing Lenovo laptop AC adapter to dramatically reduce the charge time for Zettaly PowerX. It goes from zero to fully charged in just 90 minutes. That makes it one of the fastest-charging external battery packs on the market.
Why did we build Zettaly PowerX?
Like many Kickstarter projects, Zettaly PowerX was born out of a hobby. We are gadget junkies frustrated with constant low-battery warnings. We tried many battery packs, but weren't satisfied with the excruciatingly long recharge time.
Time is the most valuable resource that we have, so making Zettaly PowerX recharge as fast as possible is our top priority. We also know that between your laptop, smart phone, tablet, camera and so on, you’ve got enough stuff to carry around. We made a battery pack that works with cables you already have with you by putting your laptop adapter to work.
Zettaly has no association with Lenovo or Lenovo’s ThinkPad - we’re simply Lenovo users that wanted a better battery pack for our gadgets.
Why does speed matter?
Put simply? It gets you energy when you need it the most. We've all been in situations where we need to charge our devices while we're out and about - whether in an airport, between meetings, or at the park. But let's be real: nobody wants to spend a ton of time hanging around an outlet.
Zettaly PowerX is designed with this frustration in mind. Loaded up in advance, it extends the life of your device for hours or even days. But even if Zettaly PowerX is empty, it minimizes the time you need to spend tied to an outlet. For example, if you charge your phone for 10 minutes, you'll be lucky to get another hour of usage time. But if you charge Zettaly PowerX for 10 minutes and plug your phone into it, you'll extend the phone's life for several hours.
Sleek, portable design
Not only does Zettaly PowerX have a high-capacity and best-in-class recharge capabilities, its light, sleek design makes it convenient to carry with you wherever you go. Weighing less than an iPad Mini and only a bit bigger than a smartphone, it is easy to toss in your laptop bag, purse or pocket to take with you on the go. And because Zettaly PowerX uses your existing Lenovo AC adapter to charge, it means fewer cables for you to worry about.
Our first model of Zettaly PowerX comes in two different models, with an input socket that's compatible with either Lenovo's classic round-barrel power charger tip or its newer, slim rectangular tip. Our backers that receive Zettaly PowerX will have the option to choose the model before shipping.
Power any USB device
Zettaly PowerX works with any USB-powered gadget. We’ve tested it with iPhone, iPad, Samsung Galaxy, Nexus, HTC, Moto, LG, GoPro and many other brands of smartphones, tablets, and cameras. To DIY fans: we've also tested it with Raspberry Pi :)
Reliable, high performance
Charges gadgets fast: Zettaly PowerX charges devices at speeds comparable to the device's OEM charger.
Built to last: Zettaly PowerX is designed to maintain more than 80% of its maximum capacity after 500 recharging cycles. In our testing, we were able to maintain more than 90% of maximum capacity after 300 cycles.
Easy to understand: Zettaly PowerX's digital display makes it easy to understand how much battery you're working with and how fast you're charging your gadgets.
Zettaly PowerX adheres to strict safety standards. We use UL-certified, high-quality battery cells by Samsung SDI, and an intelligent power management IC by Texas Instruments. Our advanced safety circuits also protect against common hazards.
Zettaly was founded in 2014 by Harry Wang. Harry received a bachelor's degree in physics from Jilin University, and went on to complete a master's degree and PhD in electrical and computer engineering at Cornell University.
The name Zettaly is derived from “zetta,” a unit prefix denoting 10^21 or one thousand trillion. Upon the completion of this Kickstarter campaign, Zettaly PowerX will be our first consumer product. At Zettaly, we think power so you don’t have to.
Risks and challenges
We want Zettaly PowerX to live up to the highest quality standards, and that that means testing, iterating and improving, and then testing more. We've been testing Zettaly PowerX prototypes in the field since March, and it is now undergoing official FCC/CE lab testing. We've also contracted a reputable factory in Shenzhen, China and had a successful test-run production. Your support will help us go through a final round of tweaks before we increase production (don’t worry - there won’t be any visible changes). We are confident that we can scale up production and have Zettaly PowerX in backers’ hands before the holiday season.
While we're confident in our design and speed of execution, there are always some risks. Given the renaming (Update #8/9), the mark on our final product is subject to change. The project could be delayed or (in very rare cases) cancelled due to unforeseeable events such as production glitch or longer-than-expected certification process. Rest assured, we want to get Zettaly PowerX to you as soon as we can. We will keep you updated on our progress. Thank you for your support!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Our patent-pending technology uses laptop AC adapters to dramatically reduce the charge time for Zettaly PowerX to just 90 minutes. We believe in speed and convenience, and want to offer both to our users who are already carrying a powerful AC adapter with them when they travel or head into the office. Zettaly PowerX allows you to get more out of the adapter that you’re already carrying with you.
Lenovo is the largest PC manufactures in the world with a strong user community. We started PowerX with a Lenovo model partly and selfishly because we are Lenovo users ourselves :) We do plan to expand our product families in the near future.
Zettaly PowerX works with Lenovo or Lenovo-compatible laptop power adapters (45W or above). It comes in two different models that support either Lenovo's traditional round-barrel plug or its modern slim rectangular plug. Backers will receive a survey at the end of the campaign to select Zettaly PowerX models.
You may use some of the universal adapters on the market. The power adapter needs to meet the following criteria:
1. Rated 45W or greater with an output voltage 18.5-20V (note: voltage >20V might be okay, but we haven't tested such laptop adapters);
2. With a plug that's either Lenovo's round-barrel type or its modern slim-rectangular cousin. If you aren't sure, please stop by a local laptop retailer to take a look at the adapter interface on Lenovo's demo laptops.
We have other PowerX models in development that are tailored to non-Lenovo laptop chargers. But they're further out on our production schedule. Stay tuned by following us on facebook.com/zettaly or twitter.com/zettaly, bookmarking our website www.zettaly.com, or pledging a dollar to get on our list of Kickstarter backers to receive updates.
10,000mAh is a way of measuring battery capacity. Factoring in power conversion loss, a fully reloaded Zettaly PowerX can provide a full charge to an iPad Mini Retina, or power an iPhone 5 for over 40 hours of HD video playback.
Zettaly PowerX's patent-pending technology leverages your existing laptop charger, enabling it to recharge much faster than other battery packs on the market today.
Zettaly PowerX can charge most USB-powered gadgets, including but not limited to iPhone, iPad, Samsung Galaxy, Nexus, HTC, Moto, LG, GoPro and many other brands of smartphones, tablets, and cameras. To DIY fans: we've also tested it with Raspberry Pi :)
No. Zettaly PowerX can only charge USB-powered devices. There are some USB-powered laptops on the market, but we haven't got a chance to test them.
Zettaly PowerX's cycle life is rated >500 cycles, i.e. recharging fully for 500 times, with no more than 20% drop in its max capacity. This means in practice you may use Zettaly Power much longer beyond the 500 cycles, just with a smaller capacity.
Yes. You can charge up to two devices using Zettaly PowerX at the same time when Zettaly PowerX is loading.
