About

Help Publish My Book on Depression

My name is Harry Spitz and I have been a photographer for more than 50 years. "Depression" has been a very special and personal project for me.  So many people were touched by it and desired early versions that I decided it should be my first venture into the world of self publishing.

I have lived with depression, on and off for more than 50 years.  I have tried multiple anti-depressants as well as various other types of therapy.  I have had many losses over my life and I am sad to say depression still haunts me.  This book is not meant to offer cures or explanations; rather it offers a visual interpretation of how depression feels,  along with quotes that offer my own and various people's insights into, and feelings about, the disease.  It is my belief that this can serve some valuable  purposes. The depressed person can see that he or she is not alone in suffering. Those who don’t have depression can get a small glimpse into what it is like for people who do. For therapists and patients, an individual’s reactions to the quotes and images in the book may help them discuss where they are in their journey.

I have have highly manipulated all of the photographs in this book  to the point where some might seem that they are painted rather than photographed but they are all original photographs.  One of the reasons I did this is that to show that the world is perceived differently under the influence of depression.   One is never quite sure if what one is feeling is real or caused by the depression.  Most of the people in these photographs are not suffering from depression, as far as I know, but the pictures are meant to evoke some of the different feelings that one experiences when one is depressed.  The quotes have been carefully chosen to go with certain photographs, although some could surely go with multiple images.

If the book does not fund I hope to make it available with on demand printing, however it will leave the per book cost at approximately $175 a copy rather than the  $70 cost I hope to achieve through this Kickstarter.

I hope that you will support me with my project and if it does not speak to you, that you pass this kickstarter campaign on to someone you think might be interested in helping me get my book printed.

The following quotes are from people who have seen advance copies of "Depression":

"The first time I saw this book, I was instantly draw in by the astounding images that represent so poignantly what I have heard many people with depression struggle to describe. I immediately begged for a copy. This is one of the best purchases I have ever made.

It is difficult for people to explain their experiences living with depression, which is why this work is so impactful. While feeling depressed is part of life and all of us have our ups and downs, having depression has more to do with a state of being than just a feeling.   It is often a sadness beyond tears, a sense of being numb, flat, disinterested in the life going on around you, and stuck in a place where you are unable to function and give to the people you love in the way that you want to. People who are living with depression often distort things to the negative, primarily themselves, their relationships, and their self-worth. These images show more clearly and beautifully then any I have seen, this distortion of peoples’ sense of themselves.

I have worked with people who suffer from depression for many years, and the photographs taken and manipulated by Mr. Spitz capture the depth of this experience in a way that words alone cannot. To refer to these images as photographs is not quite right. They are more like paintings. You appreciate their power and beauty, and, along with the words that articulate them, they show you viscerally and intellectually what depression is for the people who live with it.

Mr. Spitz draws us into his images to see this difficult illness that is so often misunderstood and obscured from our view. He shows us depression in a way that only someone who has lived with it and who is an exceptionally talented artist, can do."

Anne Konigsberg, LCSW

"I read and viewed your book and think you did a very good job of capturing what it is like to feel depressed and/or suicidal.   A lot of people didn't understand why successful people like Robin Williams and Anthony Bourdain committed suicide when everything seemed to be going so well for them.  It is hard to understand on the surface ot it.  Your photos and the quotes you chose convey how despair feels even if it offers no solutions as you said in the beginning..  This should be helpful to persons coping with depression who think no one understands them and who might appreciate seeing a book that says what they can't say.    The photos seem very good, powerful, and original. Thanks for sending a copy to me. I haven't had depression in my life like you but have experienced it a few different times.   I remember one day I was in San Francisco at Pier 39, a place I had enjoyed in the past and had found exciting. Since I was grieving at the time, I found the place to be pointless.  I couldn't understand why I or anyone else would want to buy anything.    Everything seemed so meaningless.  I couldn't enjoy anything.  Later, I returned  when I wasn't depressed and enjoyed it as I had in the past.   Although grief is not the same thing as depression, this aspect of losing the enjoyment of things is the same, I believe."

Alan Cooper, PhD, Psychology, Ret., Co-author of "A Physician's Guide to Coping with Death and Dying"

"I urge you to support the Kickstarter campaign for this stunning, insightful, meaningful, important book created by our friend, Harry Spitz. A talented, professional photographer for decades, Harry's book is exquisite, both in his creative photos and personal words. Please share this page with your friends-- particularly those working in the field of mental health--and consider making a contribution to achieve the campaign goal."

Lisa David, Speech Therapist, retired

"A really valuable Kickstarter campaign that you and your organization can support to help people with depression.

My friend Harry Spitz created this book of compelling photographs - from the ground up and with no funding.

It's an exposé into depression and its impact.

Why this is so powerful is that it helps people get their head around what’s going on and get a deeper understanding... in a way that words can’t express.

A simple low cost aid to create connection and help the world in one small but important way.

As children we draw pictures to express how we feel… and somehow we magically understand what those pictures mean. Yet in business we ignore this powerful tool of imagery, as a means of expression and connection. As they say... "A picture paints a thousand words".

What you can do:

> Support the Kickstarter campaign - if you can

> Share this with others and help get the word out

> Get your organization on board

> Help remove the stigma!

The smallest things can create ripples, save lives and build bridges and understanding, where previously there was suspicion and accusation."

Heather Rutherford,  CEO & Managing Director, Performify Group

"Amazing images from a very talented photographer!"

Jean Fukaye-Mochizuki, Forensic Photographer, Photographer III, L.A.P.D

"This is NOT a depressing book! I found it moving and uplifting to see the experience transformed into art. The photos are evocative and fascinating. I hope this project goes."

Kathy Wexler, M.A., L.M.F.T., Educator, Supervisor, Consultant, Therapist

I plan to print 750-1000 copies. This will be a beautiful hard cover horizontal 13" X 11" coffee table book. It will contain approximately 59 original images as well as 58 quotes and additional writing by me. There will be approximately 127 pages on high quality paper.  I reserve the right to make any changes to the book I feel will improve it, including the number of copies printed and the price.  The slideshow has been altered from the book version to make it more legible on various devices.  The rewards will only be charged and shipped if the entire goal is met.  All rewards with prints included will receive an ebook to select which image you desire.
