About this project
"HARMONY FOR ELEPHANTS"
A breathtaking combination of eye-catching photography, knowledgeable insight and evocative music, brought together as a unique book with an accompanying album of specially written music, all about elephants and how they can live in harmony with humans.
This is a joint project between professional wildlife photographer and biologist Mrs Lesley Wood and Dr Kate Evans, biologist, elephant researcher and founder and director of the charity 'Elephants for Africa'. They first talked about publishing a book on elephants together back in 2010 and since then the concept has grown and developed massively into the amazing book and music project that it is today.
The aim of the project is to publish a beautiful fine art book about elephants and elephant conservation with its own CD album of music specially written for this project, recorded and donated by several world renowned musicians including ex-Genesis band members, Steve Hackett and Anthony Phillips.
The book will be available both as an A4 sized unlimited standard edition and also as an A3 sized boxed limited edition version (250 copies only) which will come with a specially produced signed and numbered limited edition fine art companion print. The limited edition books will be signed by Lesley and Kate, and some of them will also be signed by the musicians involved, making them extremely sought after by collectors.
Both editions of the book will have an accompanying CD album of music composed specially for the project. The music will be a mixture of instrumental tracks and tracks with lyrics.
This Kickstarter project will raise the funds that are needed to publish both versions of the book and produce the accompanying music album. It will also help to raise awareness of the work being carried out by the “Elephants for Africa” team in Botswana.
Most of the work to produce the book and album is done. An excellent publisher has been sourced, the writing is well underway, the photographs selected and the music is being composed and recorded. A top record company is involved. All that’s needed now is help to raise the funds in order to get the book published and the album mastered.
Once published, 50% of the proceeds from the subsequent sale of the book with its accompanying album will be donated to “Elephants for Africa” to help them to continue and extend their valuable elephant research, conservation and education work and their ongoing harmonisation of the local community and elephants in Botswana.
“The World is currently losing between one hundred and two hundred African elephants a day due to the illegal ivory trade. However poaching is not the only threat to the long-term survival of the African elephant. Throughout their range the African elephant requires land outside of protected areas in order to survive, and this brings them into contact and therefore conflict with humans. Botswana is home to the largest remaining population of African elephant in the world and is therefore vital to the long-term survival of this iconic species. Due to recent ecological changes and an increasing population the African elephant is returning to old historic rangelands bringing them into contact with communities that have not had to live alongside wildlife, and in particular elephants, for a long time. The Boteti River region where the “Elephants for Africa” research camp is based has the highest reported incidences of human wildlife conflict.
So how do we move to a world of harmony where wildlife and humans can live safely side-by-side? We at Elephants for Africa believe this is achievable through applied research and education and the understanding of the requirements of both animals and humans. We take an holistic approach towards finding solutions for the communities living alongside wildlife and to benefit from it." Dr Kate Evans, Founder and Director of Elephants for Africa.
The book will be a stunning combination of Lesley's beautiful fine art elephant photography and Kate's compelling writing giving her expert insight into elephant biology and behaviour. It will take the reader on a journey through the lifecycle of the African elephant, babies, juveniles, adolescents, adulthood and old age and the challenges faced by them.
Along with the accompanying album of music it will be a breathtaking combination of eye-catching photography, knowledgeable insight and evocative music. This is an extremely exciting project and once produced we hope that this book along with it’s music will be a real indulgence for the senses.
The book will also include facts and statistics about elephants and short comments from local stakeholders in Botswana about their thoughts and experiences with elephants in their daily lives and how they are working hard to live peacefully alongside their local elephant population.
This project is unique.
It’s not just a book and its not just an album of music.
It's a book with its own accompanying album of specially written music.
The album of music will be a compilation specially composed for this project and donated by a selection of world-renowned musicians and it will ONLY be available together with the book and via this Kickstarter project as a digital download. Musicians involved include ex-Genesis band members Steve Hackett and Anthony Phillips. Other renowned musicians are Nick Magnus, John Hackett, Nad Sylvan, Rob Townsend, Amanda Lehmann, Andy Tillison, Tony Patterson and Andy Neve who composed the music for the ‘Wildlife Photographer of the Year’ awards and Chris O'Connell.
This special collection of music truly is a ‘Live Aid’ for elephants, music written by famous musicians to be the voice for elephants and give an audio companion to Lesley's beautiful images of wild elephants.
WHO IS INVOLVED?
Lesley Wood Lesley is the driving force behind this project, pulling together her photography with Kate's expert writing. Lesley's contact with the music industry has taken this project to another level and she's the one responsible for getting all the wonderful musicians to join the project. Lesley has a BSc (honours) degree in Applied Biology (Ecology). She became a professional wildlife photographer in 2006 following a 20yr career in industry as an entomologist. In 2013 she was awarded ‘Natural World Photographer of the Year’ and gained her Fellowship qualification in 2015. Lesley is passionate about Africa, its people and wildlife, particularly elephants and their conservation.

Dr. Kate Evans Kate has over 18 years of experience as a field biologist in Southern Africa. Having completed her BSc in Zoology in 1993 she volunteered throughout Southern Africa to gain fieldwork experience before completing a Masters on the parasitology of a pride of lion in the Okavango Delta. In 2002, she set up a long-term research project on elephants in northern Botswana, which was the basis of her PhD on adolescent male elephant behaviour and the foundations of the charity Elephants for Africa. She has also studied meerkats in the Kalahari, insects in the Namib Desert, monkeys in South Africa and hippopotami in the Okavango Delta. She continues to be inspired by the wilderness of Botswana and is passionate about conserving African elephants. Risks and challenges
Most of the hard work for this project has been completed.
This project is being managed by professionals throughout. Lesley is a professional wildlife photographer who is efficient at producing fine art quality photography and has many contacts in the professional photography industry. Kate is a leading expert in elephant conservation and the musicians are all well known competent professionals who are totally committed to the project.
- Lesley has all of the photography finished and the pictures are of beautiful fine art print quality.
- Kate has planned out the theme of the book, the writing is underway and the 'Elephants for Africa' team is working closely with the farmers and school-children in Botswana for their contributions.
- The musicians are all committed to producing and recording their tracks for the album and many of them have already completed their tracks.
- We have excellent publishers ready to get to work on the book. Several meetings have taken place and everything has been carefully costed out.
- We have a top UK record company on board, Esoteric Recordings (Cherry Red Record Group) who are ready to produce and master the CD and help with marketing.
The only challenge that lies ahead is to keep it to our estimated timescales, this isn't just a book project, it isn't just a music album project, it is both at once which makes it a complex project to manage.
Lesley, as manager of the project, will endeavour to keep this project running to plan and aims to have the books with their album ready in time for Christmas 2016.
If fully funded, with the professionals involved, we have no doubt that this project will be completed. We see no risk involved for investors and we will do all that we can to reach our estimated timescales although these could potentially slip by a few weeks if printers/producers have any issues beyond our control.
Any questions about anything relating to this project please get in touch via the contact button.
A BIG THANK YOU from Lesley, Kate and the musicians
Many thanks also to Leanne of "Bellatrix Photography & Film Ltd." and Dick of "TriMedia Enterprises" for their expert help in creating our Kickstarter video.
Thanks also to Matt Le Quesne for book mock-ups.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
